American Gangster was Jay Z taking Reasonable Doubt and giving it a new production value. Like an independent movie director releasing a film before his prime with low budget and going back to that concept years later with a bigger production house and unlimited resources to re-release to a broader demographic. Brilliant album. From the production to the story arc. This was Jay-Z at his peak.

Looking back 5 years ago now. It's chilling to think that when this interview came out Taxstone may well have already murdered Banga, allegedly, He wasn't arrested until January 2017. When he said I won't do anything wrong to you apart from kill you, I totally believed him. Taxstone was a street dude who was definitely about what he talked about. It's a real shame to see where he's now at.
@lightmajor1 Жыл бұрын
I feel what you're saying.. looks like Vlad initially posted this on 5/23/16.. the Irving Plaza incident was 5/25/16.. I'm sure Vlad does his interviews a few weeks to a month or so ahead of when he posts them, but either way the interview had to have been before the incident but probably not too far from when it happened. Very very wild and a shame for all.

Jay-Z was the focus of "that era" because he was truly speaking from the heart, and personal experience. Even to this day he's always rapping about his own life and experiences, down to even the minor bars, unlike many artists who rap "conceptually." even when he was talking about money. He's always been criticized for his money talk, but unlike most rappers who talk money, his talk isn't targeted at the average Joe. He was always talking down to all the "fake rich" dudes who were either frontin like they had money, or who thought the money they had was REAL money. Rappers would go to the hood in their ferrari's and lambos and call themselves ballin because they were shittin on everyday working men and women. Jay would go to where the dudes with money were at and shit on them. That was Dame's whole marketing strategy to give them a buzz. Go to where all the big parties are at, or all the other rapper's shows, and show the people how broke those dudes were compared to them. That way people would be talking about the Rocafella crew. You'd have a hard time finding another artist in ANY music genre who's gone 20 years making nothing but songs about his (or her) own life. American Gangsta a classic? don't know about that one though....but I could see why Tax feels that way.
