Great video! I was unfamiliar with the mosaic site as well as Ribblr and love your tips for Yarnsub. Although as a total fan of Ravelry, it is hard to say it is a monopoly, when it is still free. Especially at a time, when so many aspects of knitting are being monetized. I get that Ravelry is not continually refreshing its look, but it never fails to impress me with the number of patterns, search options, yarn info, other knitters' notes and more. TBH were it not for Ravelry, knitting and the world surrounding the craft would not exist as it is now. And once again, it is free to use. Thanks!
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSАй бұрын
Thank you! And you're right. Ravelry isn't technically a monopoly. I just use that term here to suggest that it's sort of the only real option with that breadth and depth. It's sort of cornered the market, so to speak. And I don't even know if it's the "look" of the platform that I feel needs refreshing, but more-so the functionality overall. I feel like there are things they could do, that Ribblr is exploring, that could be really cool. But of course, that would lean towards needing to monetize the platform as a whole to justify the additional improvements to the UI. It's a give and take.

I use yarnsub all the time! It’s great to use when knitting a pattern, I search for the recommended subs and see if I have any in stash. The other sites look really interesting too. Thanks Tayler!

What Knitup does is knitting on demand, like Amazon does printing on demand for certain books. Absolutely wonderful and very handy video. Ribbler sounds lovely and I'll definitely be having a good look round there, just like yarnsub. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 😊

I'm excited to check out the KnitUp site, and thank you for featuring it! I'm petite sized and hands have become fussy with how much time I can spend knitting or crocheting.

Thank you for the video. I was creating a graph for a stocking and was using Word to design. Chartminder looks like a much better solution! I am going to try these. I have also been looking into Knit Companion, so Ribblr sounds fun to try.

This is great. I love how excited you are about all these sites. I actually really love yarnsub for just understanding yarn more. It has so many dimensions I don’t always consider.

Definitely going to be checking out a few of these, and very intrigued by Ribbler. Ravelry is handy but my friend and I always lament that it feels like the format is stuck in the early 2000's and hasn't kept up with the times.

I use all of my Ravelry patterns in knitcompanion no problem- I feel like they work really well together without any hassle, so I didn't completely understand your comment about Riblr being like the two combined? And I believe you can add others through dropbox or just as a pdf,( but I haven't explored these option).Thanks for the useful information in your video- I wasn't aware of some of these options!

I just have to say that the price for the 'design your own knitwear' is very resonable!! I spend almost as much $$ for handdyed SW DK merino to make a sweater.
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSАй бұрын
Right?! I felt the same. Now I know that what is reasonable is relative, but when you compare it to the market value for a similar mass-produced sweater or the cost to knit your own, it really dials right in.

Great recommendations! I was just working up my courage to try making a simple colorwork sock design just for fun. Gentle reminder to folks that if you do like one of these free tools, support that indie developer who made them by making a donation if you are able. Or help spread the word!

This is very helpful, Tayler! Thank you for sharing it! Few weeks ago I was looking for site that make mosaic charts and I used to have on Pinterest, but the pin is missing, I'm not sure the site is maybe gone too?! I can't remember the name. I have the book "Design your own crochet projects", that came with very useful site where put your gauge swatch and its calculate your stitch and row count for all of the projects in it, vanila socks , plain hats, scarfs. Recently this site is also gone which is such a shame. I don't like follow patterns, but math isn't my favorite part when make my own projects. We definitely need simple algorithm calculator for all knit, crochet and tunisian crochet basic projects.

I have a couple of patterns on Ribblr but it looks like they’ve updated the site since I first used it so I will need to check it out and update them if there’s new features! I wonder if the free patterns having ads means the designer gets ad revenue similar to KZbin? I wish Ravelry had this option because my paid patterns only get a few sales but my free patterns get hundreds of downloads! I’d love to offer all my patterns for free if I would get paid ad revenue similar to how KZbin works.
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSАй бұрын
I'd love to see them really double down on some of these great functionality features. I've heard that the ads possibly do work like that on Ribblr and it seems like a win-win for everyone. 💖

Viscose is not necessarily made from bamboo, although it can be. What is viscose material made from? Viscose is made from wood pulp, typically from trees such as pine, beech and eucalyptus. The manufacturing process of viscose includes dissolving the wood into a pulp solution, which is then washed, cleaned and bleached. This solution is treated again to create fibres

Ribblr is in partnership with Joann's, so you will often find them linked together in some way. I have messed around with it a bit but have not really decided how I feel about it yet. I'm sure it will change and grow a lot over time. Hopefully in a positive way. Happy Friday!
@RaediamoonАй бұрын
I like using ribblr when im at my computer or on my phone sometimes. but I prefer the ability to print it out though and while it is an option for designers to put in it seems like a lot of them don't include a printable version of the pattern. Other than it seems really cool.

I can’t help wondering if Knit Up has a return policy since it is designed to order. It is quite possible we get it wrong and don’t like the result when it arrives. Great podcast and learned a lot!

Great point! I wonder how they handle that. I didn't look into that here, but I'm curious as well.

I have used the yarn sub site for years......BUT....I never knew I could change the fiber option! I have aplha gal and can't handle lanolin or wool. I blister badly. Since when do merino shed naturally 😂 And I might go bury some some superwash in the compost heap and see what happens
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSАй бұрын
lol when I was editing this back I was like, “wait. You think they just drop their fleece…?” 🙄😅
@sjorchatodman34Ай бұрын
I went huh?! too. Yaks shed their fleece naturally in Spring, herders collect the shed fleece. There is no sheep variety that sheds their fleece naturally.
@blackhellebore89Ай бұрын
@@sjorchatodman34 Wiltshire and Dorper are both shedding breeds. Super popular on lifestyle blocks (hobby farm/homestead) here in NZ so you don't have to worry about shearing them. They just look like welfare cases for a couple of months as they shed out 😂
@colleenbarry5197Ай бұрын
But those shedding sheep are not Merino, right?
@blackhellebore89Ай бұрын
@@colleenbarry5197 no, and their wool isn't particularly great either - it would be used more for industrial stuff if anyone ever bothered to pick it up - but why when there are huge flocks of wool sheep in the world?

Thanks for this intriguing video. I HAVE A REQUEST: Is it possible for you to be “less active” with your arrow/pointer? It is so distracting and kind of anxiety-inducing (at least for me). It scurries around like a busy squirrel. May I suggest instead that you place the arrow to where you’d like to attract our attention, but then keep the arrow STILL (ie immobile)? Thanks so much for considering this and again, thank you for your great information!

knitup sound great but they don't mention anything about muelsing 🤔
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDSАй бұрын
They don't. I almost said something when I was recording this when I saw that the yarn came from Australia, but I didn't want to presume. And also, in some countries, muelsing isn't seen quite the same way as it is in the US and Europe and is considered more acceptable in those places. It's a big topic I'd like to explore more actually because I think there are a lot of misconceptions about the process.
@WearewoolpeopleАй бұрын
The superfine wool does mention non mulesing on its page. I suspect the Australian merino is still likely to be mulesed.
