@@ishguitars LOL - there were other clues when you dug into the chords that were more confirmation that this was the Taylor. Of course if you only play a single chord, it would be more difficult with less information for your ear to judge. I have a Core Hollowbody II with Piezo myself and pleasantly surprised at how close the SE is. I do think a Piezo is different from putting a mic in front of an Acoustic but I do think these PRS guitars are superb for creating an 'Acoustic' sound on a Stage with the playability and functionality of an Electric too.

"B was the Taylor - you can hear the strings squeal so it was so obvious..." - Agreed, dead giveaway! "The other two were a bit more closer." - (Grammar nitpicking - my apologies) Either say, "The other two were a bit more close." or, "The other two were a bit closer." Adding the "-er" to "close" makes it a superlative, which is what "more" is, and used together they are redundant.

What's crazy is how close the PRS is to a true acoustic sound. It won't take much signal processing to fool anyone. Brilliant video and while I knew which was which, that was in large part due to the fact that phosphor bronze strings have their shift noises that nickel and steel do not. *Many years ago, I installed piezos in my Squier and Kramer stratocasters.* I converted 1 tone of each guitar to a volume for the piezos straight to the 1/4" jack so I could blend it with the single coils or run it solo. *Eventually, I put acoustic guitar strings on the Kramer which still worked fine with the pickups but ultimately, it sounded 100% identical to an acoustic guitar.* I just bought a dozen large piezo discs and plan to do this arrangement again.

This showed me exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks. I had wondered if the large acoustic body contributed anything to a stage amplified acoustic guitar sound. And seems to sound just as good when plugged in. In fact, I guessed them wrong.

It was extremely easy to tell them apart. Extremely easy! However the core model does sound closer to the Taylor. At the same time you were using an inexpensive Taylor and as a former owner of a 814ce, to me Taylors always sound thin anyway. Compare it to a fuller sounding guitar like a Martin and this test will be easy for those with not so good ears.

SE. Taylor. USA PRS. That was pretty obvious to me. String noise was evident on the taylor. The USA PRS sounded fuller than the SE, but not quite as tasty as the Taylor. Not to say the SE was bad in anyway, but in this line up it kind of comes in last. I'm on the search for a good electric with a Piezo pickup to attempt to fill up some sonic space in one group im playing in. Enjoyed the video, thanks for going to the trouble to make it!
@GooberNumber9 Жыл бұрын
I could easily hear the sound of a full resonating body on the Taylor. I even guessed right on SE vs USA, but I think that was more luck. The other factor is the SE2 electronics on the Taylor definitely reduce some of the piezo sound that is still clearly there on the PRSes. All that said I can definitely see myself having gigs where a PRS with piezo is close enough for the acoustic sound and also has the electric tones in one convenient package.
@Smittefar13 жыл бұрын
I don't really care, which one was the real acoustic - I preferred C slightly over A and B was dead last far worse than the others in my opinion. B managed to sound thin in the top-end and boomy in the low-end at the same time, which is impressive, when you think about it. A has slightly more piezo scratchiness than C, but I am pretty sure, you could match them pretty close with a slight hi-cut on A.
@paq11ful Жыл бұрын
The acoustic was identifiable from the way that the string / finger noise interacted with the body of the guitar. Pretty subtle though! I picked out the SE hollowbody as A, maybe luck, but I own one of those, and they are fantastic guitars. The core HB II sounds awesome as well. I've always said to anyone questioning about the SE HB II that it is a guitar that punches way above its class. @sonictooth4 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly, I was correct on all three. And yes, I did not get ahead of the video. Here are my thoughts/observation as I listened: Guitar A is definitely Piezo, it's got a very DI dry signal to it - the notes don't seem to have any space to breathe. This becomes especially obvious when the strumming part starts. Those loud accent strums seem to almost 'bounce off' instead of lingering on/naturally decaying. Guitar B - darker and naturally quieter than A. The string buzz during the slides gives it away as an acoustic - the DI Piezo sound does not pick that up as much. Guitar C - definitely a Piezo, but somewhere between Guitar A and B soundwise: as naturally quiet and dark-sounding as Guitar B but less dry sounding as Guitar A. By logical deduction I assumed that since this was the more 'natural' sounding of the two Piezo guitars this must the higher end of the two PRSs.
@ishguitars4 жыл бұрын
Interesting detailed analysis - so serious question, which one did you "like" the best, for no other reason than how it sounded? Try to take the idea of price point and acoustic vs hollowbody out of it.
@sonictooth4 жыл бұрын
@@ishguitars Honestly, the least favorite was the Taylor DI. Even though it's more 'natural' sounding, I'm not a big fan of that string buzz and the overall dark sound. I'm not an acoustic tone purist by any stretch, but if I had an 'ideal' acoustic tone it would be something off of early Michael Hedges' first two albums - particularly Aerial Boundaries. That's acoustic tone right there. He used FRAP pickups, a concept that isn't too far off from the Piezo system. For my own needs, I'm definitely open to a Piezo system - I like composing in alternate tunings with an acoustic sound while having the upper-fret access, scale length, neck feel and tuning stability of an electric. In any, case I would use the Piezo system with acoustic IRs - those are a game-changer. Having said that, I'm undecided between the two PRSs. I would be curious to see just how much the wood quality and the different Piezo systems on these two PRSs impart on the same acoustic IR. If you can, either find an IR of that Taylor you're using in the video or (if you're able to) make your own IR of that Taylor and use it as a reference point to test it on out both PRSs. That's probably worth testing out in one of your next videos. My guess on the difference in sound: not much. If you can make the amp models in both Helix and the Axe FX sound practically the same with the same IR (or so I hear from people who have A/B both units), then it stands to reason that an acoustic IR would just as well fundamentally take over the Piezo sound of either of these PRSs and render whatever edge soundwise the higher-end PRS has over the SE useless.

B sounds like the PRS. Not sure what C is

Squeak gave away the Taylor. The SE they say is brighter and it shows.

The PRS's sounded better than the accoustic, with the core sounding a little better than the SE

To be fair.. both of these instruments rely on piezo pickups for their acoustic electric tones. So of course they sound similar.

I think that A is the Taylor.

A sounded worst overall to me. None sounded great strummed but C was by far the best. B was the best picked. My guess is A is the cheaper PRS, B is the Taylor and C is the expensive PRS.

Wow.. I think I was tipped off by the string sounds on the Taylor. Really disappointing sound on all the piezos when strummed.

A sounds best of these 3. B would basically also have good sound, however the terrible string squeeze sounds destroys it for my ears. C somewhat muddy in comparisation to A and B.

It's actually pretty obvious the B guitar is the Taylor because of the string slides on the acoustic.

Sneaky sneaky, next time we need to play one chord without moving around!

I guessed them all right. A and C both had the obvious piezo "quack" or "buzz" to them (sounds like bzzt most noticeable on the high strings). B didn't have that and also had more low end thump which is expected from a full bodied acoustic. To my ear A sounded horrible. Very quacky/buzzy and unbalanced. If someone sent me a track that sounded like that I wouldn't even try and use it. I would tell them to rerecord it at my studio using one of my guitars. B was the best and most realistic by a mile. I could use that anywhere. And C was surprisingly crisp and balanced sounding with only a little quack but still not as good as the Taylor. C could be okay as just a bit of acoustic guitar layered in with other things in a mix with lots of other elements but it doesn't have the realism nor the bottom end to hold its own on an acoustic guitar and vocal only singer/songwriter type of track.

I got them all right but surprised by the warmth of the core vs SE. Taylor clearly won the acoustic sound test but the core’s softer warmth maybe better for acoustic jazz. Thank you for this video!

What I think blindly: A- Chinese hollowbody B- taylor C- American hollowbody ... Aaand guess I was right?
