Taylor Guitars' Grand Pacific is a new line of round-shoulder dreadnought guitars built with the company's V-Class bracing. Conceived for flatpickers, Americana players, and anyone wishing for a dose of vintage character in a Taylor package, the initial Grand Pacific line consists of two Builder’s Editions, the mahogany 517 and the rosewood 717, and the more-affordable 317e.
In this video, shot on location at Nashville, Tennessee’s Southern Ground recording studio, Taylor designer Andy Powers and Peghead Nation co-founder Teja Gerken play and discuss the two Builder’s Edition models.

I need to play one of these Taylors. They really sound full round and even with the bass, mids and treble.

I think it can be a mistake to compare it too much to some other guitar. There are other amazing guitars out there. But from what I've seen, the Grand Pacific almost has this bit of bluegrass twang built into its DNA, but it's subtle and not overpowering, and it still has that Taylor clarity, too. That twanginess isn't necessarily for me (maybe), but the shape of this guitar and everything about it is so beautiful, I keep coming back to it, and may have to buy it one day.

Most people who make videos are not audio engineers. The audio on videos is usually terrible. These were recorded at Southern Ground Nashville by their staff and mixed in my home studio.

Travis Niles and definitely a focus on mids. A clarity for melody that's typical of a good J-45 (I love mid '60s examples). This have undoubtedly they're own flavor, though.

Don't fool yourself... it IS a Round Shouldered Dreadnaught. This is not a bad thing, but trying to play it off as if it is just something "unique" and not really this or that....nope. It is a Round Shouldered Dreadnaught. Wonderful guitar.

Seems like much of what Andy says here is nonsense, brilliant as he is.

If Martin didn't charge so much for their mahogany and fishman pickups I would have kept my OM28e. Taylor makes quality at a better price point and their electronics are in unbeatable. And they don't throw another grand on for it. I bought the sapele version of this model and it's easier to play and sound wise comparable to the rosewood Martin's and Taylor's I've had.... This is a great guitar and has simply become my favorite tool... And I'm more of an amp gut. If you're looking for a rounded shouldered dreadnought - J45ish - look here first. A J45 made from mahogany is 3000. A Taylor 717 GP with rosewood and torrified Sitka spruce top. WAY better guitar and a better deal.
