I'm sure I'll have more fun facts to point out as I continue watching, but one thing that I always chuckle about is that in "Picture to Burn", the original lyric was "So, go ahead and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy. That's fine, I'll tell mine you're gay". But she changed it to "That's fine, you won't mind if I say...", because she didn't want to offend anyone by inferring that being gay was a negative thing. As a gay man, I do appreciate the thoughtfulness in the lyric change, but there is a tiny little part of me that hopes on Taylor's Version she'll give us the original lyric. That's just the petty bitch in me 😂

Mary's Song is actually a real story, about a couple she once lived next-door to, who came over for dinner one night and told her their story. Taylor said, "I thought it was so sweet, because you can go to the grocery store and read the tabloids, and see who's breaking up and cheating on each other (or just listen to some of my songs, haha). But it was really comforting to know that all I had to do was go home and look next door to see a perfect example of forever."

The debut!!! Epic. She wrote Our Song for her 9th grade talent show. I’ll assume she won. She actually had to fight to get it on the album, her label originally said no but she fought for it. And won. And it ended up being her first #1 song.

I’m so excited for this. Taylor Swift is the soundtrack to so many peoples lives, especially her original fans. We all were around her age and her songs were so relevant to us and continue to be with each album. She was there for my first boyfriend, when I was cheated on, growing up, we turned 22 the same year. I think that’s where a lot of the devotion comes from.

I had the pleasure of seeing Taylor Swift live when she was opening for Brad Paisley way back in 2008. She was so blown away how the crowd knew the lyrics to her songs. She was so adorable. I was able to get a signed copy of this album out in the lobby of the arena. Now my 13 year old is a huge swiftie and I get to take her to see Taylor in concert next November in Toronto.

I'm so glad you did this album! I became a Swiftie during the Red Era. I was never into country music and never felt compelled to go back and listen to the full albums on my own (I just knew her popular country hits). This was the best scenario all around bc you don't cut out parts of the songs, so i got to hear everything, plus your commentary, which I always enjoy. I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would. But I also feel that, being older now, I have a greater appreciation for other types of music and her beginnings. Thanks so much for taking me on this journey!

October 24 will make Debut 18 years old. And 18 years ago, I heard this album when I was 43. It began a real admiration for Taylor Swift's songwriting that has only deepened through the years. I fell in love with music in the 70s, and the music was rich with brilliant singer/songwriters that inspired Taylor, one whom she was named after, James Taylor. So we can thank Andrea, Taylor's mom, for introducing her to such fantastic songwriting. Jim, I'm thrilled to have the chance to follow you through your Taylor Swift journey. If it is even half as moving and fulfilling as the past 18 years have been for me, it will so be worth it! Thank you for sharing your musical knowledge and your life's experiences with us. You have quickly become one of my favorite reactors. Looking forward to each and every Swift reaction! ❤

I, for one, am glad you're doing it this way. I appreciate the thought you put into this, and your reaction and opinion of the record. Now, for onward though, I have a suggestion. Hear me out here. The next album is Fearless. The whole Fearless tour is on youtube, good quality (Journey to Fearless). What if you reacted to that instead of the album? She does all the songs from the album and a few from this one as well. I'll tell you the pros of this. One- you get to experience the authentic younger performances of the song without having to stream the stolen version (as much as I love the Taylor's versions- they are recorded by her older self with her matured voice, and takes away from that young hopefulness and naivete a little bit that originally made these earlier albums so appealing). Two- you (and us with you) get to see her perform live in a concert and seriously, you can't imagine the treat that it is, and Three- as far as I can tell, literally nobody has reacted to this, you'd be the first. I hope you consider this. Thanks again for choosing to explore Taylor's music. These sort of reactions are also a chance for us fans to reexperience and rediscover music we love (I literally found out watching this video that in Picture to Burn, she's saying 'all my wasted time', not 'all my waste of time'!)

It’s nice to see a deep dive into this album which gets overlooked Some of these songs were written when she was very young. For instance, The Outside, which you interpreted to be about longing for romantic love, was written when she was 12 years old about getting shunned by her classmates Apparently she would go entire days without anyone speaking to her. I was 14/15 when this album came out and Tied Together With A Smile was my “if I need a good cry” song. She played it for one of the surprise songs when I went to the Eras Tour and I criiiiiied😆 Hearing grown Taylor sing it and being an adult now myself, it brought me right back to that time when I didn’t feel good enough and just seeing how much I’ve grown since, and how she’s grown too. It was just so surreal😭

This Album is her first Masterpiece. I'm desperately waiting for Taylor's Version. You have to watch the Musikvideo of Picture to Burn. ❤

So prophetic that you wondered about hearing a mature Taylor voice on A Place In This World. She sang it on the last night of the entire Eras tour in Vancouver. There are lots of KZbin videos of it - she does mash it up with New Romantics from 1989 but it still gives a good glimpse.

I love your breakdowns. Even with no video stuff to go with it. You're so thoughtful when it comes to the lyrics and the music. Thanks! ❤❤❤

this is one obvious fact to point out: angry baby taylor was ruthless with her revenge songs

The Outside is one of the first songs Taylor wrote when she was 12, and I’m so glad it made it into the album. I was 16 when this album came out, it’s the album that made me fall in love with her music and she has been perfectly wording life situations and loaning us her words to try to make sense of this world ever since ❤

Just FYI, the male background voice in a lot of her songs since her debut album is from her guitar player (still is) Paul.

Wrong. It's from her producer Nathan Chapman. Maybe the guitar player sang in the live shows.

The fact that this woman is 6 years older than me baffles me. Her writing is insane even from this young age.

I would highly recommend starting with the Fearless Tour DVD. Half of it is cuts about her life and how she got to to being where she was. It basically starts from when she was a kid and explains it enough and in a cohesive way compared to viewing the many small interviews or videos she recorded. It has more details on how she met Scott, why she moved, inspirations behind the songs, and how she went from opening for larger bands to doing a full blown tour of her own record breaking country album.
