Taylor pulled her music off Apple due to the small amount they paid musical artists. As a result, Apple agreed to give the musical artists a bigger piece of the pie. This did not benefit Taylor at all but, she felt so strongly about how musicians are treated, she did it anyway.

The best thing about the re-records is she includes vault tracks. Songs that were written for that album but didn’t originally make the cut. And somehow they’ve all been bangers.

A notable mention is that while she doesn't own the masters to her first six albums, she does have the publishing rights. Since Scooter owns her masters, she's been denying permissions to those songs for anything she can. She'd rather lose her share of money than let him get another penny if she can stop it. If she gets a request for the rights to use her songs, she will only allow it if it's a (Taylor's Version). The boss. Also, I Heart Radio has said that any time a new rerecording comes out, they'll stop playing that album's past version. Hopefully other companies follow as well. In the meantime, most swifties do not stream the "stolen" versions. And while fans will buy the rerecordings anyway, she's also making it worth our support by adding Vault Tracks (songs that belonged to that rerecorded album's era, but didn't make the cut). She's listening to what fans had said "should've been singles or should've gotten videos" the first time around. In her words: she listens, and is doing the things. P.S: I just recently found your channel, and I'm really enjoying the stay. Already subscribed 👌🏼💯

The publishing rights are also critical because sort of fundamental for establishing legality of the re-recordings.. but since she’s a writer on every single track of her discography (shoutout to untouchable!!) it’s no issue ;) A kinda poetic turn back to the main points in Halsey’s post/Taylor’s deeper argument here

Taylor’s situation is also a bit unique because she writes all her own songs, and owns the intellectual copyright for them… so she was able to veto decisions for the original/stolen masters even before she started re-recording. This is also why she is able to re-record her masters, because she owns the intellectual copyright to them. Now that she is re-recording, she is able to devalue the original ones in many ways. Not only are her fans exclusively supporting the TV versions (which she never asked for, she always said this was a passion project for herself to own her life work), but she also now has the power to negotiate directly with people that want to use her songs in movies or ads, or other projects, and can stipulate that she only wants the TV versions to be used. So basically now the original versions are not really used anywhere if there is a rerecorded version available. A lot of radio stations have also promised to switch out the original songs when a TV becomes available. I also heard that the company that Scooter sold her songs to is suing him because when he sold them (which was before she had started re-recording) he downplayed that part, said she wasn’t serious about it and wasn’t actually going to do that. And now the songs are becoming worthless. The new versions are kept so close to the originals. Taylor has said before that she goes line by line, analyzing the original masters so that she can stay true to them. I can’t even process how much time, effort and money that would take to do. Only a couple songs sound very different, and there are theories that she only changed them because the way they were originally released was not how she wanted them to sound, that she had pushback from her label. So the new versions are more true to her original idea. I also think it’s brilliant to add vault tracks as a bonus for supporting the re-records. Anyways hope that puts a little more context on everything!

Both fearless and red have been rereleased, and speak now comes out in a few weeks. She mostly stays true to the original, a few of the re-recording do have quirks, but overall they’re just as good and some are even better.

Fun fact taylor literally put SO much work into this, even after she signed with big machine, she and her mum would drive to radio stations, and she’s go inside and ask for them to play her music, suggest interviews, she worked with big machine when their office didn’t even have furniture, like she gave it a lot, she references this in many songs in folklore and evermore like in the song it’s time to go: “15 years 15 million tears begging till my knees bled, I gave it my all he gave me nothing at all then wondered why I left, no he sits on his throne in his palace of bones praying to his greed, he’s got my past frozen behind glass but I’ve got me” and in another song called my tears ricochet: “ And I still talk to you (when I'm screaming at the sky) and when you can't sleep at night (you hear my stolen lullabies), I didn't have it in myself to go with grace and so the battleships will sink beneath the waves you had to kill me, but it killed you just the same, cursing my name, wishing I stay you turned into your worst fears and you're tossing out blame, drunk on this pain crossing out the good years and you’re cursing my name, wishing I stayed look at how my tears ricochet”

the crazy thing is that Taylor doubled her sales streams and fan base since 2020 and dropped 4 original albums but even the 2 re-recordings so far literally outdid and out streamed the original albums in 1 YEAR no one buying or streaming the old one all fans and people committed to it and this will reduce the worth of the old one

I don’t think Taylor got a big signing bonus when she first signed. Taylor had previously said what convinced her to sign with Big Machine is the fact that she would be the one writing her own songs. This is especially important to her, even more so considering that labels usually hand their new artists music instead of allowing creating freedom like what Taylor wanted

scott swift invested 3% shares during Taylor's 2nd album fearless, due to the success of her debut album his father decided to invest coz why not?? after all, big machine is not that financially stable at that time.. There's been a gray area on that narrative coz a lot of people thought her father bought the whole record label... And yes scott borchetta definitely loaned some money but it's not enough to market taylor.. they can't even promote her outside of nashville and pay for radio plays.. Taylor literally spent time doing gigs after school and begged the audience to request her songs on the radio because as mentioned big machine is not financially stable to do all the marketing.. Taylor used myspace (majority) to promote her music and connect to the fans... That's how she started establishing her fandom.. It's literally just a risk for both parties... But surely taylor and her mom majority did all the work.. You can find an old interview of her former manager to back that up

Truly the more I learn about the music industry the more I understand why Taylor's ONE piece of advice to people who wanted to do what she does was "get a good lawyer." The music industry is so predatory in how it operates. And can you imagine what it's like for artists who aren't as big as Taylor Swift? Who don't have the visibility, fan support, behind the scenes support, and legal team she has? If it was this difficult for HER? I shudder to think what it's like for a smaller artist. ALSO: The thing I love most about all of this is that Taylor not only refused that heinously predatory offer from Borcheta to "earn back" her own damn work one album at a time, and is systematically tanking the value of her stolen work as each new TV album is released. She's also released FOUR albums in the last five years, meaning if she'd taken that deal she could have "earned" back four of the six albums by now. So she really said "I COULD earn back every album in half the time it took me to make them. But I'm not going to because that's a shitty thing to make any artist do."

The re-recordings are true to the originals (even with the same features all returning to re-record their part). She wants us to stream the new versions (which she lablels as "Taylor's Version" or "TV" for short), and she wants to devalue the old versions (the "stolen" versions). Her fan base is so loyal that the re-recordings have been hugely successful, and many of the songs are actually better since her voice has matured and recording technology has improved. She has new album art and "vault tracks" (one of her vault tracks won music video of the year at the Grammy's this past year) .... I would suggest you react to a video about the re-recordings so far, so that you are prepared for Speak Now TV which comes out July 7th and is highly anticipated! I'm not saying you should actually try to listen to the re-recordings, because both Red TV and Fearless TV are VERY long. But maybe an educational video? Not sure.

About Scooter forcing Ariana to keep Ghostin on the album, it wasn't that she didn't think the song was ready or good, its that the song is about her ex Mac Miller's death (he overdosed) while she was dating Pete Davidson, so it was very personal and emotional fot her.

Actually the drama doesn't end there. After that, Scoter helped shamrock to sell that Master to other new investors and he made such a big profit of it. He lied to them that Taylor would never re-record her music that her actions were just a bluff. But then in 2021 Taylor released 2/6 re-record albums and she managed to decrease the original units consumption of that album and this terrified the new investors. Based on the news, the new investor tried to sue Scooter for lying in their business deal. But I guess Scooter's law team is that great since he managed to escape. But In 2023, thanks to the success of Taylor's ten studio album "midnights" and her on going tour "the eras tour", Taylor's catalogue value is up 70-80% and I guess since there are 4 re-records that she hasn't released, then Scooter and the new investor can be happy, since they're also profiting from it. (Taylor too obviously since she is the artist and she owns the publishing right) oh yeah regarding about the publisher owner, I guess the vid didn't explain about it. But it's basically the right that Taylor got because she's always received the main credit of her music (such as writer, executive producer/composer). The funny thing, since 2020 Taylor is blocking BIG Machine and the master owner from using her music to commercial deal such as ads and soundtracks. So yeah they must be pissed, since the only way they can make a profit is through streaming/sales only. Taylor even encouraged her audience to not listen to every projects Big machine released under her music profile these days because that's the only thing that Taylor can't block from them.

I don't think I've seen this in the comments yet. When she signed that deal in 2005? SHE WAS 15 years old! FIFTEEN. In a 13 year contract? Yeah. This is also why people are preferring to do business directly with Taylor Swift instead of going through other means. Someone wants her song for a commercial? They should deal with her and not Big Machine. It's just common sense to work with the artist directly.

I’m so glad Taylor brought me to your Channel! You have such interesting insight! Btw if you decide to react to all of her work (which we would LOVE) I do think you should listen to the original and then the re-recorded back to back… obvs I am not supporting the originals (nobody should stream them after that), but I think as a new fan you should at least listen to them once and make the comparison, see the evolution etc…. Now you’ve listened to Reputation (and are probably familiar with a few huge singles over time) but since you’re interested in her story too, I think a good idea would be to listen chronologically and maybe have an explanation video of every era… I don’t wanna pry too much in her personal life but the general idea of what was happening at the time gives you so much insight and makes everything make so much more sense! Edit: eg for this situation there are songs on her latest albums (that cut deep let me tell ya)

From an interview Scott Borchetta did with business week: "So he decided to start his own label. Before he left, he struck up a relationship with Swift, then a teenage singer-songwriter shopping songs around town. One night that year, when Swift was performing at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, Borchetta made an offer to Swift and her parents. He said he was leaving DreamWorks to start his own label. He didn’t have an office, and he still needed financing. But he promised Swift that as soon as he was set up, she’d have a deal with him. “They all looked at me like I was crazy,” he says. Two weeks later, Borchetta got a call from Swift. “She goes, ‘Hey, Scott, it’s Taylor. I just want to let you know I’ve made up my mind, and I’m waiting for you.’ ”" so it looks like he may have gotten financing from banks possibly and I'm sure his connections in the music industry helped. Also reading about his past jobs it doesn't seem like he was broke.

I like hearing your insights on this. masters dispute is nothing new in music, but Taylor's case is, probably, the most impactful one for the industry. one example, Olivia Rodrigo's deal with her record label includes that she would own her master recordings after x period of time (not sure how many). ETA: I don't know why I put "masters dispute" because there is no dispute lol. it's more about artists' struggle to own masters of their own music, or to take control of how the masters are handled

It's normally 10 20 30 years Before they can own their masters Cause the Beatles had to wait 40 years to get theirs Because the record label wants to make as much money as they can and if they lose the masters they don't make any money That's why it's so long before you can only own them

Toby keith was a major backer of BMR at the beginning. It is one thing that ended up making him one of the richest country artists of the 2000s and up

Wanna hear another infuriating thing? Now that Taylor's ReRecordings are this insanely successful, Labels are adjusting their contracts to put in a rule that you can't rerecord your albums for - I think - 30 years after publishing. These Institutions are soooo slimy.

An old vh1 Behind The Music about TLC, the late Great Lisa Lopez gives you a quick lesson as to how the music industry totally screws the artist and grabs all the money for themselves, it's utterly disgusting and frankly evil. So proud of Taylor and I wish her the best!

I always find it so sad to hear how the connection between all these young artists fall and we only see the fall from the public eye of incidents like this whole shenanigan with the 2 Scotts… Selena, Justin and Demi are all people who appeared in Taylor’s old old old MySpace vlogs. JB and Demi are people she used to hang out with. JB opened for her. Selena is one of her best friends to this day. JB used to date Selena and this relationship still carries rumours and ugly shit to this day. Demi used to best friends with Selena until a black cat passed between them.. Justin was also a big formative idol artist for Shawn Mendes-who also opened for TS later in his career… and who also dated (dates?) Camila Cabello… who supported Taylor… Must be so hard never knowing who are your friends or foes.

And Ariana opened for Justin early in her career. I don't remember who Ariana was signed to before Scooter found her, but I know they weren't giving her the attention she deserved. It took many many years for her first album came out. I remember when Scooter found her, I was excited, and her music making sped up, and she had a huge spike in popularity. I'm afraid now she's stuck with him.

As the writer of the music she is entitled legally to record it. Scooter wouldn’t let her buy her masters so she re recorded those albums. People will now buy Taylor’s versions and not the original mastered recording so now whoever has her masters will lose lots of $

One point that was left out is the fact hat Taylor has the right to re-record her albums because she is at the very least a co writer to every song.

Yeah she is not fully informed and my son spent six months trying to negotiate to purchase the rights to his album back with Sony lawyers and omg it was stressful. We were able to finally get it back and we quickly purchased the copy write and we own his bands music. Yes a master is the final product. It's in no way the first raw recording. Now we self release his music so we keep 100% of the profit but we are also putting out all the money for merchandise and everything else.

WOW. It's the way I mostly come from the context of Taylor Swift, and yet you without Taylor context brought up so many relevant points in her story without even knowing. Getting a good lawyer. Turn and burn. Not wanting artists to develop when they're hitting the jackpot where they are. 13 years being too long for a young artist.... all things very very relevant that Taylor herself has brought up over the years.

BORAHAE 💜 I am a SWIFTIE before being an ARMY. It's cute my two worlds are colliding. Actually my standard was Taylor swift I wanted real lyrics and great song writing skills that's why I never liked kpop. It was so superficial to me, but apparently BTS is just an anomaly. I never would have guessed that their lyrics are on par with Taylor Swift. Borahae 💜 Btw, my fav album that showcases her lyrics is folklore and evermore hope you would react to that. Similar with BTS, Taylor has ERAS and each have different sound. The one you reacted REPUTATION was actually quite a shock to swifties it was dark and edgy different from her county and pop music. But Folklore and Evermore are alternative soft. These albums are not popular since it doesn't cater to everyone. Only those who have music taste. Similarly to BTS, the songs i liked about them are not commercial bts. But the songs that usually won't be heard on the radio but are actually masterpieces.

I just thought it would be interesting for you to know about it..

My understanding is that he chose to not attend the shareholder's meeting because he knew it was going to have something to do with selling her masters, along with everything else, and they were all told they could not say anything to anyone about what went on in the meeting until after the sale. Her dad could not keep a secret like that from his own daughter.

Couldn't this type of issue be avoided by adding a "right of first refusal" clause in the initial contract (as sometimes included in real estate transactions)? I don't see the downside for either party this way.

In the tech industry, investors are not giving loans. If the technology product doesn’t sell well, the investors lose their money just like the product developers do. That to me seems like a much more fair system. Investors get their money back when the company goes public or the company is sold. So the original creators do lose control of their product a lot of the time, but still sounds better than this.

I feel like she has alot of misinformation regarding the beginning of taylors career. For as long as i rmb, she was discovered by soctt when she was singing in blue bird cafe, not any showcase! Scott B was employed in a music label at the time but bc of taylor, he left to create his own with the help of scott S (3%). Taylor and her family did their own funding sometimes with the promotion as well. bm did not have that advance payment type of money. It also wasnt a 13 year contract. It was a six album contract. Meaning if taylor puts out one album every year, she could get out

Of course, Ariana, Demi AND Justin have all since been screwed over by Scooter and have dropped him. Taylor’s versions of her music are even more successful than the masters now. She also wrote and recorded “Vigilante Shit”, which is a vicious account of how she facilitated some big time karma on Scooter and Scott. It’s glorious.
