July 24th 2020 is when folklore was released. July 25th 2020 on a camping trip for my birthday- I put my headphones on and sat by a waterfall before anyone else was awake and listened through the album for the first time. I cried, I admired, and I considered it a gift. I've been a fan since Red and a stan since 1989, but folklore was a special album for me. Taylor's career has affected so many people's timelines ❤

51:13 when I tell you I gasped. Literally top song on Evermore for me like I can't hear "Right where, I cause no harm, mind my business, if our love died young, I can't bear witness and it's been so long, if you ever think you got it wrong I'm right where you left me" Without having a visceral, painful reaction.

I came looking for this comment lol. Seriously it’s such an under appreciated MASTERPIECE. It thematically represents everything that evermore is. The idea of “what if?”

I'm in a similar boat, I used to despise her when I was a kid but my dad really loved folklore and evermore when they dropped and through him I learned to like her as well. Also "Picture to Burn" always reminded me of one of my favourite songs - "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind - for some reason, so I always gave that song a pass lmao

For me folklore is a white wine and evermore is red wine Folklore is a getaway trip to some coastal town you visited in your childhood and falling in love with a local even though you know it can’t last. Evermore is returning to your hometown for the first time in years and looking around at this place and people you know so well but knowing it’s not your home anymore. Folklore is a mermaid. Evermore is a witch.

I became a swiftie honestly randomly. My ex-best friend encouraged me to listen to Taylor A LOT. So I gave in and became a typical swiftie liking 1989 and all her hit singles. But I would say around when she announced 1989 tv I became a real fan. It was so magical to just watch myself grow into a swiftie. The first song I ever listened to was White Horse. It is still one of my favorites to this day (2 whole years). I went to the eras tour movie! I knew only a few songs sadly, but now I know all of them by heart. I just remember the night my ex best friend “broke up” with me, Taylor’s music just healed me. I feel like she helped me so much through growing into a healthy happy person again. Learning new things about her everyday is so amazing. Seeing all the edits bring me so much joy. She’s just always happy. You have helped me become the biggest swiftie ever. I cannot thank you enough Ally! Love you to the moon and saturn, Abi PS: my favorite albums are speak now and ttpd

As someone who had always been aware and enjoyed Taylor Swift throughout my life but never really been invested, I became a swiftie watching the coverage of the Eras Tour. Over I guess just the last year and a half, I've done my homework and really caught up on general swiftie knowledge. None of this was shockingly new, but it is so fun to hear the oral history of a Self-Titled/Debut swifitie. Ally, I feel like you need to be bestowed the title of Chief Taylor Swift Oral Historian. You're doing great work that frankly as academics continue studying Taylor and her career, they're gonna need to start relying on people like you and your amazing wealth of knowledge!

I already knew everything you told here, but it's always a big pleasure to listen to you talking about Taylor. Informative, kind and entertaining! And my swiftie testimony: I'm 33, Argentine born and raised. I first discovered Taylor because a "MSN friend" I had back in the day (2008), she sent some audio files of Our Song and Should've Said No and I really liked them, even though I wasn't really a country music fan. Taylor wasn't really known or famous here in Argentina. After some years she became more famous and I remember listening to 1989 a lot, but I really became a fan during the pandemic when Folklore came out. I had the oportunity to make a big dive into her older stuff and fell in love with her. That was when I needed to know more about Taylor and your videos really helped with that, so, yes, they're very usefull. Thank you for that :)

such an amazing video!! but i was still so shocked when you said that right where you left me was your skip from evermore. it’s a perfectly respectable opinion though and i just wanted to tell you why i personally love it so much. JUST THE IMAGERY UGH. the first verse introduces us to things changing all around and then we are struck with this image of her completely still, with dust building on her hair at a restaurant table. like those photos with the motion blurred background except sad, so so much sadder. and it gets sadder every time you listen to it since the real world has moved, but when you press play on the song she still stuck right there, and she will still stay there every time you listen. the dust increasing bit by bit. JUST SO BEAUTIFUL. (imo right where you left me could’ve fit perfectly after tolerate it at the eras tour with the table and everything) but i digress. just picture a mini movie in your mind the next time you listen to it

Hi, Ally! I became a Swiftie after Speak Now was released. I had just gone through my first big break up, and when I heard Last Kiss, it broke me and healed me in a way I could never express. I’m 33 and such a fan of Taylor Swift because of her relatability, transparency, and always somehow knowing how to put into words what we are all feeling. I really enjoyed this deep dive! I’d love some more ranking videos!

45 yr old, mother of 3. Born in Southern California. Live in Pennsylvania now. Became a fan in roughly 2015. Listened to Red and Reputation on repeat in my car for a good 2 years. When Lover came out I paid even more attention, but it wasn't until TTPD that I fell deeply in love with Taylor's music and songwriting. Since then I have been catching up on what I missed and watching people like you deep dive and get stunned by deeply iconic, raw, and talented she is. I'm now a huge proud Swiftie.

I am 45 and got teardrops stuck in my head like a worm when it first was released and always tuned in and listened to Taylor after that. Though I would say my obsession started when Folklore came out. That is the first time a line she wrote changed my life. In time to go - when she said staying for the kids only ends up hurting them worse. I stopped walking and realized that was what I had been doing. Then tolerate it, then you’re losing me - Taylor became my divorce coping mechanism. The joy in her songs, listening to and acquiring the context and all the lore and meanings - watching reactions, and diving head first into being a swiftie again literally helped me survive getting divorced, the unexpected loss of my brother and healing after betrayal. I brought my daughter to the eras tour for her first concert because we both needed to be surrounded by joy and singing. So I am a longtime fan but new to being a full fledged swiftie! Love your content!

The day the You Need to Calm Down video came out I saw the open letter from Taylor come up in my feed. I was very intrigued and so I watched the music video which I loved! I had never really been a fan before (Although I had gone through a phase with White Horse during a break up a while back). I spent a few weeks listening to YNTCD non stop. One week while driving to the grocery store I let the Lover album play on shuffle and False God came on..Chills down my whole body and something really clicked.. like OH.... I began to slowly find more and more songs that I loved and related to. THEN Folklore was dropped...and rest is history. Swiftie for life. I am a 40 year old Swiftie 😊

In 2009 to 2010, my best friend was a huge fan of Taylor and naturally I enjoyed everything she did, so I became a fan too. Love Story and You Belong With Me were always on the radio and I knew Taylor from the Hannah Montana movie (who was my favorite artist at the time). I got the Fearless CD on my 10th birthday in 2010, and my friend and I went to see the Speak Now tour in 2011. I was also obsessed with watching the debut music videos back then too. Those memories really cemented my love for Taylor and everything she does. Listening to Red the day it came out was a life changing experience for me and remains one of my favorite albums since. It turned into tradition to see Taylor’s tours with my mom and my friend and I would not be who I am today without them or Taylor. I found Ally’s videos in 2021 and I love them! So grateful for everything you do, Ally, and always in awe of how well you sum up everything about Taylor 🫶💕

I had my daughter in 2006 and has followed Tay through tick and thin ever since. Got lucky and got ERAS tickets to her 4th London show (first time I managed that). From the pandemic sister albums, my fav is Evermore. I also hold Folklore close to my heart. Hard to choose as they each fit different seasons🙏 I enjoy all her albums and feel blessed that there are albums for all seasons, moods, life happenings and just an afternoons deep dive once again into her lyrics💕💕💕 Thank you once more for posting this and all your lovely positive content🙏

that intro KILLED ME!!!! swiftie introduction: my name is emily, i'm a 24 year old from minnesota, and i've been a fan since debut came out!! our song was the song that made me fall in love with taylor, i remember making a dance to the lyrics as a young child teehee :,) but some of my favorites are peace, my tears ricochet, hits different, so high school, i hate it here, change, a place in this world, ...ready for it?, and end game (WHICH I KNOW IS CONTROVERSIAL TO YOU!!!!) but i love your videos and it was so fun to look back on taylor's iconic and ever growing career!!!

Fearless changed everything for me, I vividly remember when Teardrops came out and taking interest in her but Fearless is really where she got me. That cd lived in my car, daily belting to white horse and You’re Not Sorry in my car. The memories that are attached to that album mean so much to me 🥹💕

👋🏻 hi! Newer swiftie here..I started listening to Taylor because my sister and nieces wanted me to go with them to see the eras tour movie, so I started listening to every album starting at the beginning! Once I got to Red, I was HOOKED. I swear, All Too Well was written out of my diaries. Also, I think a series of Taylor’s style would be great! Street style, music video style, concert style..all of it! Your video essays are such a fun, easy watch!! Thank you for all the time and energy you put into them! 🫶🏻

As someone who fell in love with Taylor's music due to folklore being indie folk - I've never been called out like that before 😂❤ It's true, I came from indie/folk music and looked down a little on Pop & Country music. Folklore changed everything for me when it comes to music. That's why I got a folklore-themed tattoo (mirrorball). It's forever my most favourite album of hers 🩶🩶🩶 Also, Great video als always! 🫶🏼

Thanks again for a great video. I love the old-timey version. I am a 36-year-old male from Germany and started listening to Taylor by coincidence. Lover was released, and KZbin brought it up to me when I was listening to music while working, and there it all started. And this year I was able to see the eras tour in Munich.

Ally thank you so much for sharing!!!! I loved all the little intros of the albums/eras. Back to your questions, I am 30 years old, living in Spain ( I am Spanish and French), working as a doctor, I've been a swiftie since I listened to Love Story on the radio, got completely obsessed with the song and learned it on guitar as well. Having Speak now and Red through my teeanage years was really something, I always say I can handle a break up because of Taylor's songs lol. I must confess I was less of a fan when she releases Reputation and Lover but got me completely back with Folklore ( I love Bon Iver and the National). I got the chance to go to the Eras Tour this year and it was really one of my dreams come true. Burst into tears when I heard Fearless ( and Marjorie, and champagne problems, and so many more) My skip songs ( this was really really hard) are: picture to burn, come in with the rain, never grow up, WANEGBT, IWYW, so it goes, it's nice to have a friend, peace, gold rush, glitch, Robin. We need the deep dives of both Reputation and TS before the rerecordings !!! I am actually more excited about TS TV's than Rep TV ( I really hope we get I'd lie!!)

and i must confess…i was a casual ts listener in the beginning. it felt odd that i was listening to a teenager sing when i was a full grown adult. then my daughter saw the red tour with her step mom and in my pettiest voice said who is taylor swift anyways? so i listened to red front to back and was like oh, i think i get it. then 1989 came out and i was hooked. im such a slut! for pop lol. i went back and listened to earlier taylor and fell in love with country again. reputation gagged me and was when i started to deep dive into the lore. now im a 46 year old obsessed with a pop start and i wouldn’t change a thing! 🫶

Ugh, the nostalgia! Debut, fearless, and speak now are the albums of my life. To go back and experience them as I did in the early 2000s, I wish! To this day, still my number one plaid playlist is just those 3 albums.

I started liking Swift in 2006 and i listened to Taylor Swift and Fearless religiously (in between my alternative emo music) after those 2 I would only listen to select songs from each album (I like to think the songs I listened to from each album were songs I was destined to find at the time I needed them since all the songs weren’t the singles or more popular songs) but I revisited all the albums once folklore was released and have been obsessed ever since. So even though I was aware of most of the Swift lore I’ve loved watching your videos and relearning everything and even turning my mom into a Swiftie too! Thank you for all your hard work and bringing girlies together 🫶

I’m in love with that rumor you heard! I genuinely hope Reputation Stadium Tour comes back to Netflix! Either that or my personal hope, that she releases it as a DVD with Rep TV! Those album cards you made are iconic Btw! Taylor Swift the album is what made me a fan and hearing you talk about it it life giving! I would love a deep dive for both albums but this one in particular!! Teardrops on my Guitar made me a Swiftie and I’ll always love this album! I personally like this little 14 track album beats out 19 track Lover and 27 track Fearless in my mind and heart. It’s just SO good! Oh! A Place in This World is definitely what I would go with if she wanted to pick a track title for the album, but I did think that’s a little influenced by Eras tour, but also I just love that song!! My favorites are Cold As You, Tim McGraw, Teardrops, Mary’s Song, & The Outside! My skip is probably I’m Only Me When I’m With You, which I think proves how good it is! Fearless!!! Such a moment, man. I didn’t get to be as in the moment with this album which might actually be why I like it less than others, I didn’t get the album till it had been out for 6 months and though I listened to the songs on KZbin it wasn’t the same. My favorites are Breathe, That’s When, You’re Not Sorry, The Other Side of the Door, and Come on with the Rain. My skip would probably also be Forever & Always Piano but I also am almost always gonna skip Love Story, I’m sorry. It’s an amazing song but if Taylor herself isn’t singing it in front of me then I’ve heard it too much. Speak Now! Thus far we are totally on the same page, for all the pop culture moments and stand out songs. My favorites are Castles Crumbling, Enchanted, Last Kiss, Haunted, and Never Grow Up. Plus Innocent is also my skip. Red! My first truly immersed era! I was DEEP in my Taylor obsession and as a girly who didn’t do the internet much before the age of 16 when I moved states and started at an online high school, I dived headfirst (fearless) into Red! Looked past any of the noise and was just the biggest fan of this album!!! I famously (in my world) bought this album release day with my very first paycheck ever! I listened to it nonstop! There may even be a video of my dancing to it on an Internet. My favorites are The Moment I Knew, All Too Well (held the number two spot even when it wasn’t the 10min version), Holy Ground, The Last Time, Come Back… Be Here. This is definitely the hardest to come up with a skip so far… but I guess State of Grace Acoustic? Unless we can count Taylor’s Version tracks cause then it’s Ronan just because it’s too sad to listen to regularly (and that’s coming from the sad music parasite who loves sad music). 1989! Yay! Pop queen!!! And that sentiment about how Taylor can make a 10/10 A++ album and it’s not even in your top 3 cause you personally relate to other albums more is SO accurate!!! Wonderland, Out of the Woods, All You Had to Fo Was Stay, Style, Is It Over Now? are my favorites! Shake it Off would be my skip, it’s iconic I loved it when it first came out but once again if Taylor herself isn’t singing it in front of me I’m probably not listening. Also this was the time I felt so disconnected from Taylor and the fans. For some reason I had not found the Taylor side of Tumblr (or anything that I really liked on Tumblr just stuff my “friends” liked) and I felt like she had grown too big to really connect with anymore. I loved the album (not more then Red but still loved it) but once the build up was gone and the album was out I sort of felt like everyone loved Taylor now and I wasn’t as connected to her because of that. I was an odd child and I was just barely in college, still with my high school boyfriend, definitely needed to grow up some. I missed the old Taylor but didn’t dislike the new Taylor just felt less connected. Reputation! My personal FAVORITE album, when she came back and said “I’m sorry the old Taylor can’t come to phone right now… why? Oh? Cause she’s dead!” I was ready to hear it. After so long without new music some pivotal personal stuff this album really came out at the perfect time! I may not have know much about what was going on with Taylor but I had long since stopped listening to what the media had to say about her, but I too had killed the old me and was ready for a new chapter. The year Rep came out I had turned 22, got thrown into a new career(?), stopped attending college (nearly for good), and broke up with my boyfriend of five years. What you say about Reputation is so true! I once saw a graphic or post about how Reputation is really a sweet pastel love album wearing the facade of snakes, black and anger which is true. The album is almost about letting go and looking past all the bad to see that there is good and you just have to hold onto it. You didn’t say a slip for this but I actually do have one. Favorites are Getaway Car, Dress, Don’t Blame Me, I Did Something Bad, & Dancing with Our Hands Tied, King of My Heart, and New Year’s Day! On the occasions when I have this album on repeat for hours and days a time, I skip So It Goes… it’s just less of earworm than Look What You Made Me Do. Lover! The first Taylor Album I was super present online for! I learned about how the Easter Eggs were a thing (I always knew she had stuff that connected but never realized it was sort of a fun game). Hard agree on the sonically in-cohesive if we’re gonna say Red is sonically in-cohesive then so is Lover. My skip is gonna be hard cause I have made an entire playlist omitting all the songs I skip and or would like better if they were in a different order. I do love this album but that playlist is only 12 songs long for a reason. I think it has some of her best work I.e. Cornelia Street, Death by a Thousand Cuts, Cruel Summer, Afterglow, False God, and Daylight but I think it just doesn’t hit for me as a whole. At least most of the time. My favorites are pretty much the ones I just listed. My skip is probably consistently The Archer. folklore!!! Ah yes, we have arrived at Taylor Swift’s Magnum opus. This may not be my favorite Taylor Swift album, but no one can deny that it’s one of if not her best album. She just took what she’s been doing and elevated it times 10 or 1000 or some insane number that we don’t even know! Everybody, even my best friend who was way selective about Taylor Swift, listened to this album. And if you didn’t you one day will and you’ll probably love it. I think she’s only used folklore as a growing experience, combining everything she had prior to it and it itself to launch even further with her abilities. Also not in my top three but this is how I talk about it! My favorites are illicit affairs, hoax, the lakes, exile, and epiphany. I hate to say it out loud but my personal skip is mirrorball. evermore!!! My personal favorite of the sisters. She’s definitely a bit more all over the place between the two less sonically cohesive. That being said she does have some of the best songs ever! My favorites are coney island, champagne problems, right where you left me, tolerate it, and ‘tis the damn season. My skip has to be happiness though. I like it. I love it. It’s amazing. But it was my best friend’s least favorite song and when we would listen to this album at work we would skip it. I sort of got accustomed to not listening to it XD (Also fun fact this was her first favorite Taylor Swift album after she finally became a Swiftie!) Midnights!!! We have arrived! This album was so wild. It’s when I discovered you and started embracing Swiftiedom in a new way. It made a bunch of my friends a fan, like legit hard-core fan. It kicked off the Eras Tour, which in a sense I’d rather not talk about but is magical and amazing and thank God for the movie! Favorites are You’re Losing Me, Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, Maroon, Midnight Rain, Hits Different. My skip is gonna be Glitch. The Tortured Poets Department!! The newest edition to my top 3! I’m not sure that this album will ever be fully processed! It’s nearly 31 tracks of her best work ever! Combining midnights and folkmore perfectly. I really hope that her winning album of the year last year doesn’t prevent this album from winning album of the year just because I think that this one is more deserving. It covers so many topics, scenarios, and emotions all very cohesively, especially if you just look at the standard edition. I mean, I like it so much that I consider it two albums on my playlist where I give one song to each section (top 1-9 of each album) from each album except torture poets, which has two one from each half of the album. I think that really summarizes how I feel about it. My personal favorites range from The Black Dog, loml, I Look in People’s Windows, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, The Manuscript, The Alchemy (I could go on). My skip would also be Robin. But my mom’s would be But Daddy I Love Him, if you wanna know what someone who doesn’t skip Robin skips. Beautiful Eyes! I don’t have the the physical CD of Beautiful Eyes, but I do have bootlegs of both Beautiful Eyes and I Heart ? and personally I prefer the Old-Timey version of Christmas Tree Farm. Pretty sure this is the longest comment I’ve ever left on the internet, hope it was entertaining. Loved this video, love this series! Can’t wait for even more! I’m just such a big fan of the way you break things down!

Thank you for this thoughtful review of Taylor's work! Relatively new to Swiftdom, an older fan of Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro. I did a deep dive into Taylor about a year ago and am fascinated by the whole phenomenon of her as an artist and cultural figure. I'm kind of on my own among my circle, who are mostly musically sophisticated and don't seem to take Taylor very seriously; their loss. My favorite albums: Tortured Poets and Midnights, where I think she has mastered her materials and resources, synthesized all of the elements of her music and her writing, and is truly writing primarily to fulfill her own artistic aims.
