So, fun fact: When TTPD was coming out, people online were saying where they would put different Taylor Swift songs in terms of the five stages of grief. Taylor said “ok, I’ll play along.” Interestingly she put Betty in denial. I assume in terms of the idea that Betty and James would be able to actually move past this or that he really got it.

Illicit Affairs, Seven and The Last American Dynasty are marvelous feats of songwriting. This is where her lyrical talent shines. Illicit Affairs is actually not about love at all - it is a perfect illustration of how secrets (in this case, keeping a love affair secret) bring alienation from people, emptiness and emotional devastation. Seven is a wonderful, Faulkneresque portrait of a happy childhood turned sour - a seven year old kid spending a happy summer outdoors and slowly realizing something is very wrong with her friend, but not quite grasping what child abuse is and therefore picturing it with language of fairy tales and child games that she could understand - "playing pirates", "haunted houses" etc. American Dynasty is great storytelling and even though I am a conservative and definitely not a proponent of modern feminism when I listen to it I get why TS is a feminist - if someone like Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen had penned this song, it would have been hailed as great songwriting and masterful storytelling. When Taylor does it - people's reaction is blah, just another Taylor Swift song - and that is seriously wrong. Other songs are excellent too, but these three really showcase her enormous talent.

going through a breakup is so tough, and it’s almost impossible to be a mirrorball! make sure you take the time to do things that make you happy that maybe you wouldn’t have normally had the time to do before the breakup, and even try to find new things that you enjoy! it makes all the difference!! since you’re going through such a rough time rn i have to recommend listening to either fearless tv or red tv next as both have excellent breakup songs that could help process your emotions! sending you sm love!!❤️
