A note on the production of "death by a thousand cuts"; the "my my my my" at the beginning is a callback to the "you're my, my, my, my, lover" in lover. She's saying the my part but she can't call him her lover anymore because it's a breakup song. 😭

Everyone HAS TO read this. This is what Taylor wrote about her album RED: "there's something to be proud of about moving on and realizing that real love shines golden like starlight, and doesn't fade or spontaneously combust. Maybe I'll write a whole album about that kind of love if I ever find it. But this album is about the other kinds of love that I've recently fallen in and out of. Love that was treacherous, sad, beautiful, and tragic. But most of all, this record is about love that was red." I'm so happy she's finally writing about the golden love, like she promised. 💛💛💛

Miss Americana is not only a high school allegory. It’s a commentary on the politics of America at the time. Lyrics like “paint the town blue” is a call to action to vote Democrat in the next election. “My team is losing” is about Democrats losing the Senate and the Presidency. Comments like she’s a bad bad girl are parallels to the comments of “nasty woman” against Clinton and other female candidates. This is a high school love story interwoven with a breakup/love story to America. I think I recall you saying you were a political science major too, so I thought you would appreciate this.

The “I’m a bad, bad girl” line also references how she didn’t speak out about politics for a long time because she worried that her bad reputation would cause more negative effects than positive ones for the party she supports, but then was harshly critiqued for not doing so. But then, when she did start speaking up on politics, she was criticized for saying anything and told to stay silent because she’s just a celebrity and her opinion doesn’t matter. So she was in a very “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation, criticized both for not speaking up and also for speaking up. So the political disillusionment of that is a very strong theme throughout the song. And how she wove this idea into a song about high school and rivalries and petty school drama is so expertly done imo.

I had a really bad day so thank you for that! Lover isn’t my favourite album of Taylor, but the way I see it it’s definitely the most personal one. Somewhere in reputation she figured out who she is, in lover she lets us meet her. By saying“the old Taylor is dead”, she forced herself to figure out who the new one is. I don’t think the rep mood was supposed to keep on after the one album , like in the ME! video, the snake was always actually a butterfly inside. (Sorry. Im studying psychology and analysing Taylor is much more fun than my papers)
@turtlenecksok4 жыл бұрын
i love psychology paired with taylor lol! i feel like reputation, especially the promotion and aesthetic was inauthentic to her true self, but on purpose. (with some intentional hidden showings of her like in delicate, king of my heart, etc.) it was a callout to what the media was calling her and thought she was. the stark change to lover was the last hit to the media, showing who she really is and how different that is than what was percieved. in my opinion, it was genuis.

Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince is a whole giant metaphor for politics in America. "American glory fading before me" "paint the town blue" is Taylor assuming she wants democrats to win, and the way she pictures a perfect mataphor between highschool and politics is absolutely genius
@heriela73794 жыл бұрын
DAYLIGHT, why it should be celebrated: Here, she seems to reference a “golden” love. However, that also appears to be a callback to something Swift wrote in the Red album: “And there's something to be proud of about moving on and realizing that real love shines golden like starlight, and doesn't fade or spontaneously combust. Maybe I’ll write a whole album about that kind of love if I ever find it.” Now, three albums later, Swift reiterates that truth in Daylight: “I once believed that love would be burning red; but it’s golden, like daylight.”

@joannakowal40614 жыл бұрын
Also, in daylight she is going back to her song Red saying 'I once believe love would be burning red, but it's golden' - showing how over the years and by meeting him she changed her idea of a real relationship, that it's more than just a passion, mad love and craziness. I love how you can see her growth by that. Since that realization she's always using color gold in reference to Joe (there's a lot of it on folklore and evermore, it was even mentioned earlier in rep).

Like many people commented in Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince she's referencing 2016 elections when Hilary lost. She's using the school metaphore, but she confirmed the song is actually about politcs. That's why she sings 'I saw the scoreboard and ran for my life' - meaning the results of the elections. 'My team is losing, battled and bruising, I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed, boys will be boys then' - genius songwriting. Also yes, Joe lives in London and the song is about him. You were also right that she performed soon you'll get better on this internet concert. She said that this is a song that she'll never perform because of how hard it is for her, but she changed her mind because of the pandemic and for the cause of the concert (she thought this song will fit perfectly).

it's very interesting what you said about reputation not being her true self. i think she has one of the most beautiful souls int the world and she's super loving and as you said lover represents that better. but still i dont now if you are really aware of the amount of hate and cyberbullying she got a few years ago when she wrote reputation. she has been famous since 16 and then one day she wakes up to see that everybody hates her, that every media is talking shit about her and that people she thought were her friends weren't. she disappeared, ereased her social media. nobody saw her for months. for almost two years the public only saw like 3/4 pictures of her taken by paparazzy or in a friend's wedding. her whole life changed because someone came for her, and what is worst, with lies. my point is that even the most kind and beautiful person in the world would feel the need of revenge and the feeling of resentment. it's part of being human, even if it doesn't represent you as a person. idk i think she just needed to speak her truth and let it go and then be free of all the drama. but she needed to say it first. besides half the reputation album are love songs (gorgeous, call it what you want, new years day, king of my heart, delicate, dancing with our hands tied, dress...) so imo it's an album that represents her worst and her best and that's okay cause you can't always be the best version of yourself. sorry this was too long, loved your reaction!

Loved that you got the meaning of It’s Nice to Have a Friend as soon as it was over. It’s a beautiful song that doesn’t get the love it deserves. Agree with you on the nature love perspective of this album. She talks about love from many instances and is so clever the lyrics she uses to describe.

Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince is actually a political reference to the US situation at the time and wanting to vote the Republicans out

Countless rape allegations get thrown out of court or not taken seriously because the judges let the guys go free by stating “boys will be boys” celebrating they got away with it by “I see the high fives between the bad guys” and putting full blame on the victims, and Taylor is simply asking “then where are the wise men?” That’s what I took from that part.

Taylor and Drake are cool with each other. Taylor even went to a party hosted by Drake one time. There was a pic of them both getting food. She also listens to rap so that Drake line makes sense.

Death by a thousand cuts is a song based on a movie called someone great, Taylor really loved the movie so she wrote about it. I think it’s amazing that now whenever she’s gonna write about a break up song it’s probs not gonna be about her :)

It's Nice To Have a Friend is a progression, Taylor has always been in love with the idea of Friends to Lovers, specially of a childhood friend and first love/crush, turning into your long life lover. Something that never fades. INTHAF shows just that, two children growing up together, being best friends all their lives and then getting married in the end and becoming each other's partner in life. She's obsessed with it. This song is the older sister song of another of hers "Mary's Song" which also describes that dream. It's wishful thinking love, which is why I think it sounds so dreamy. It's not grounded on her reality at all, but it's what she longed for during her life, and something she dreamed about. Eventually she did find her friend to lovers in Joe, the first man in her life to be her friend before he was her boyfriend, and the happiest of her life. But I think this song just represents a what if. I think she likes to imagine that if she had known Joe as kids that would had been their life. They would had grown up together as friends and never let go of each other, never have to have suffered all that heartbreak etc. It's dreamy wishful thinking of innocence and pure love and why I love this song.
