I think this song is about people who get their personalities by 'mirroring' others. The people pleasing kind, the ones who never got to hear their parents say they're proud of them. The ones who are not talented enough to be exceptional, the ones who study overnight and loses focus because they don't have that mental capacity. The friend who walks behind on the sidewalk, the ones who cry themselves to sleep knowing how much of a stranger they are to everyone including themselves.

Yesterday I was out walking along the river, listening to folklore as the sun was setting, and I saw this couple on the pier. There was no one else on the pier, it was just them, and they were dancing. At that moment this song came on in my earphones and it was just the most magical moment. It was like a scene out of a movie. Them dancing all alone on the pier as the sun was setting with mirrorball playing in the background. It's a moment I'll always cherish.

This song just hits so different when you're the "funny friend". The one laughing too loudly and smiling too brightly for anyone to ever ask "hey, are you ok?". The one who's everyone's best friend, but has no one to talk to when things are going south. They're a mirrorball, and they need people to keep looking at them, laughing with them. They need to prove themselves worthy of loving, worthy of staying for, and they know just being who they are will not be enough.

"I can change everything about me to fit in" I think this song is way deeper than just wanting to get the attention of one guy; it's about trying to stay relevant to the public. At the end of the day, Taylor Swift is an artist, but she knows she has to compromise somehow to do what she wants to do, but still manage to please the general public. I remember that scene in Miss Americana where she found out Reputation did not get any of the main category nominations at the Grammys. After finding out the results, she said, "I just need to make a better record." And even though the person she's talking to on the phone said that Reputation is a great album (even though it is!), she kept insisting that she will do something better. Just like any human being, she wants that validation of having a lot of people appreciate her art. This song talks about that in such a subtle way. The real point of a disco ball or mirror ball is to be at the top and the center of attention.

This lowkey hit home waaaay too close. I guess this song is for the people who seek so much validation from other people, which is a habit they're still really struggling to break, how they used to make themselves uncomfortable just to make their friend(s) or significant other to feel comfortable, walking behind the group because there isn't enough space for you with rest, feeling left out almost all the time because you feel like the odd one out and pretending to like and know all of these things just to fit in or join the conversation, trying to have their attention on you just once, even for a second because you feel like you're invisible most of the time, knowing that they wouldn't really notice if you were gone.

This song is probably for the ppl who’s trying to do everything they can and always giving their best, so people will look at them and be proud. It’s like they are pressuring theirselves to shine and to be the one who always looked at. Inshort people who seek validation and changing theirself just so they can fit in. But it also goes for the ppl who are struggling to shine or to be looked up and always trying their best just so others can see that they are really trying to get out of the loop and they are giving their best. Both are trying to hide the pain, pretends to be happy, wanted to shine and afraid to be “disappointment” (or are already a disappointment but trying to prove that they are not.)

I feel like this song is for her fans. "I know they said the end is near," referring to the saying that female artists lose their relevance after they hit 30 and how they always have to reinvent themselves in order to have a hold on their fame. "You'll find me on my tallest tiptoes, spinning on my highest heels love, shining just for you," meaning she's still going to keep writing songs to her fans no matter what happens, even when she grows old and loses her fame.

This sounds like one of the more personal songs on the album. The whole circus imagery tells how Taylor feels as a performer in the music industry having to reinvent herself so the audience stay entertained. Then the tight rope imagery... Of course her whole journey must feel like walking on tightrope, the way she is scrutinized and judged for everything she does. Best thing? the chorus sounds like she's talking directly to her fans who can relate so much to her songs, and assuring them that she's still spinning in her highest heels, shining just for us💖 I could be wrong of course but this is how I interpret the song

@franks84624 жыл бұрын
i think of this as the more subdued and mature step-up from I Know Places. the "hush, when no one is around my dear" and being on her "highest tip toes" could allude to her and her SO having to avoid media attention as to what they do together. She's a mirrorball for the world, as well as for her SO, but for different reasons. I'm aware that this is my interpretation, though. So it's probably wrong. However, this theme is expanded on "peace."

It’s crazy that she’s one of the richest and most famous women yet she’s remained so relatable through her music. Like when she says something or writes a song like THIS… i’m moved to tears because I feel like it puts the person I am into words. I’m emotional, empathic, an over thinker and a people pleaser. This song makes me bawl. Not just out of sadness, but to describe a “chameleon” sort of person as a “mirror ball” is very beautiful. I hear this song and I feel seen and heard.

Yeah. "The I'll show you every version of yourself tonight" seems to me shes saying how she recognizes how people can relate to her songs and apply them to their own lives and situations while also saying she knows the affect her songs have on purpose and writes what she knows people will like and want to hear and relate to.
@dkesti5314 жыл бұрын
@@1940semochild I think it's coming from a more personal place than this. I feel like she's a true empath and many times these people reflect and reflect and reflect while in relationships or conversations with others, to the point where the other person might realize some deep truth about themselves or else fall in love. Or else a person who is insecure about their identity or having some kind of crisis of identity, who is essentially a social chameleon and can easily fit in any and every situation almost as if they are personality shape-shifting. It is a matter of survival and not of manipulation.
@iluvfri3nds4 жыл бұрын
In Miss Americana, she talks about people liking the shiny new toy for like two years and how artists, particularly women, have to keep reinventing themselves or else they're out of a job. As she points out, women have to reinvent much more than men, so that they can remain "shiny" to fans. She said that she thinks this is probably one of her last opportunities as an artist to grasp onto that kind of success so she has to work really hard while society is still tolerating her being successful. “Hush, I know they said the end is near but I'm still on my tallest tiptoes spinning in my highest heels love shining just for you...I've never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try, I'm still on that trapeze, I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me.” I think this song is for her fans....

2:30 this part makes me cry cause it's so relatable. i realize being in a similar situation, all the craze of teenage and early 20s has gone, and so has my ability to make my parents proud. but even when i think i'm not doing anything to make them proud, everything aroud me says another story. like a moth to a flame, i keep running in circles and i keep walking on that tightrope, doing unwanted things, living an unfulfilled life , stepping into experiences i don't wanna have; just for them to look at me n say you're enough. i wish i could just exist, without having to worry about pleasing everyone around me. i know i can change it but it's easier said than done when it's the only thing you've done your whole life. i feel everyday that the rope i'm walking on is rather tightening around my neck...

I remember reading an article where the Wire reviewed her documentary "Miss Americana" and this was the journalist's comment ""In another scene, Swift appears at the 2018 American Music Awards, wearing a mock-neck mini dress affixed with thousands of mirrored squares that catch the light of the photographers. She sparkles like a walking disco ball. It’s an apt metaphor for the version of Swift we see in the film: a composite of everyone else’s opinion of her, reflected back. Miss Americana shows us the fractals of Swift as a public person-first a precocious young songwriter, then a newly political entity-but there is no real through line to connect them, other than that Swift’s perception of herself hinges entirely on other peoples’ perception of her."" I wonder if Taylor Swift read that article.

Mirrorball in my opinion is about changing yourself for others. Having a different personality for your friends and relatives or someone else. You might be more mature with your family and more loose with your friends. Trying to make everyone love you is hard, and sometimes you just give them a different version of yourself to fit in. This song is definitely about her career. Taylor’s always been honest about her insecurities. This song is full of vulnerability! She compares herself to a mirrorball that is being looked at and looked up to by my millions of people who see themselves in her. That’s why, when she breaks, it’s in a million pieces. Mirrorball= mirable (synonym for admirable) Her status as an admirable figure has led her to be a pleaser. She feels pressure to be liked so she keeps trying to show new, shiny facets of herself so that people keep “looking” at her. Some say the “end” of her success is near & only a handful will stay by her side. However, she implies her most loyal fans are not like the regulars- they don’t care about “masquerades”. They like her for her. Despite that, she’s still insecure & has this need to continue entertaining endlessly. This is a sad song 😬

I have a different interpretation tho. For me, mirrorball represents "the other girl" in-between Betty and James' relationship (the three main characters on folklore). Here she probably met James for the first time and flirted with him (started in beautiful rooms on illicit affairs) hence the lyrics such as "hush", "You'll find me on my tallest tiptoes", and "I'll show you every version of yourself tonight." And the lines "I know the ending is near" and the way she tried her best to catch his attention all the time is indicating that she is fully aware that she is just his flings but still tries her best to get him entirely.
