They are talking about the month August. Hence the line “so much for SUMMER love” and you’ll see in Betty that James (the boyfriend) doesn’t think it was love…it was a “summer thing”.
@amyjanef
@amyjanef 3 жыл бұрын
This is true, but Taylor has also said I think that she thinks of this girl's name as August or Augustina as well. Which kind of changes the line 'August slips away' because it's more like she's losing herself in James, not just the summer.
@anotherone1623
@anotherone1623 3 жыл бұрын
@@amyjanef the affair was in August, the "summer love" line confirms it, but Taylor really had no name to the sidechick, so she named her Augustine referencing what happened to her that month

You were right on! The point of this song IS to make you sympathize with the other woman. Many artists would and have approached the topic of a love affair by writing an angry, bitter song calling out the other person for “stealing their partner”. It’s an overused trope, and Taylor realized this. I think she talked about it in the long pond sessions. She mentioned that we rarely consider how the other woman is feeling, and we tend to forget she’s still human. Taylor wanted to write a trio of songs that makes the listener consider how ALL of the parties in the love triangle are hurting.

The other woman was a teenage girl who was having her first relationship. She was deeply invested... she didn’t know he was thinking about someone else whilst in bed with her. She will have got badly hurt too.

You said it best. that's what Taylor tried to detail in this song. Taylor said in the long pond studio sessions explaining this song that society and people have this stereotype that "the other girl" whose the one sleeping with the boyfriend is this evil woman who all she wants is to sabotage and ruin someone else's life. but in reality that woman, what she wants is to be loved and wants to be happy herself.

I think illicit affairs does a good job of humanizing “the other woman” as well.
@Jannyl13

As someone who was once "the other woman" (nearly 10 years ago), I was lied to by my affair. He told me he loved me again and again until I believed him. He told me his real girlfriend was verbally abusive and mentally unstable and that he didn't know how to get away from her. Well, turns out that was all a lie. He just wanted to fuck several women. But it was easy to persuade myself that he actually loved me, easy to ignore the guilt I felt whenever I was with him, only to break down whenever he left. I always imagined us ending up married and with children. Completely ridiculous, but I was 19 and ready to believe him... I am still embarrassed and I still feel guilty to this day. I love illicit affairs. It resonates so much with me. Taylor's songwriting is sooo impressive!

I cried when I first heard this song because it reminded me EXACTLY of a “relationship” I had in high school. We were together in secret because he wasn’t supposed to date but also I knew he liked another girl and I was just the filler because she didn’t like him. Also I was a couple months older so I drove him around a lot in the beginning and I was his first kiss (and a little more 👀). He ended up moving away at the end of the summer before the next school year and it just broke my heart so much even though I was just this secret he had. The song I related to for us back then was “Dirty Little Secret” by All American Rejects, funny but also sad lol Also, I would love to get “living for the hope of it all” tattoo because that is exactly how I live life. Love this song and so glad you’re enjoying what you’re hearing so far!!! She’s impeccable at writing about the human experience and emotions.

To me, this is the fitting centerpiece of the greatest album ever recorded. It was the start of the most rewarding musical year of my life, rediscovering an artist I mainly (and unintentionally) ignored for 15 or so years. Yes, she is the best at capturing emotion and expressing that emotion so eloquently. One of the greatest songwriters of the past 100 years. Once you’re done reacting, you should listen to folklore (and evermore) straight through (including the bonus tracks) 1000 times. You won’t ever stop.

It’s twice in one album that Taylor makes you feel bad for the “other woman” (you should listen to the other one-the bridge in illicit affairs breaks me). Betty (next song) is about Betty from James’s perspective. We see the narrator from august in that song - she “pulls up in her car” and it’s interesting to see the way she sees that moment here in august, vs the way James describes it (and her) in Betty. You should go listen to cardigan again after! Cardigan takes place YEARS after Betty and August.

What I really love about TSwift is with this story, it would be SOOO easy to vilify this girl, the "other woman," cuz the trope often exists that the other woman is a stone cold bitch lol, but it's a very tender bittersweet aspect of the triangle. I really appreciate the lack of villianizing ❤
