I really love this song! By the way, "cut off your nose to spite your face" is an expression used to describe an exaggerated self-destructive reaction to a problem. And fun fact: that "all the king's horses" part is actually a reference to Humpty Dumpty, after the great fall they say "all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again". After all that she's been through, Taylor has repeatedly used these images of falling and being shattered.

'I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost. The room is on fire, invisible smoke.' I've read that the invisible smoke is the anxiety that haunts her. Perhaps believing that her world is going up in flames -- the room is on fire -- but the smoke is invisible to everyone but her. That's what I get from that line. I so enjoy your reactions, and the fact that you react to everything - the music, the lyrics, the vocals, and the meaning behind the words. Thank you.

An example to the expression “cutting off my nose to spite my face” in Taylor’s life would be when she talked about ( in “Miss Americana”) how people criticized her looks and weight. So her response was to starve herself, forming an eating disorder that she battles to this day. Thankfully, she is now in recovery. She now knows her worth, which is that she is awesome and beautiful and a genius! But unfortunately eating disorders are a life long battle, as it is with addictions.

Her saying "cut off my nose just to spite my face, then hate my reflection for yrs and yrs" I think mean that she's a master at self sabotaging good things in her life, and regretting it later. Its like she doesn't believe that good things are gonna last, like you said, after having such bad experiences in relationships. So its kinda like defensive reaction- like she said in her earlier song(I did something bad)- you gotta leave before you get left Also can you please check Holy ground at live lounge, its one of ber best performances😅

Great Reaction! so *cut off my nose just to spite my face* basically means to do something, to make a decision "for your own good", but end up hurting yourself with it. and what my interpretation is and what I think Taylor means by *I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost, the room is on fire, invisible smoke* is that she wakes up in the middle of the night coz the thoughts and concerns of hers are basically hunting her, at night everyone is asleep, it's all quiet, but she's the only one awake, walking around her house like a ghost ("I pace like a ghost"). The quietness of the night is making everything worse because her mind starts racing with thoughts even more intensely and she finds herself in a "mental prison" from where there is no way out ("the room is on fire" so there's nothing she can do to escape it). and the "invisible smoke" (fear, anxiety..) that is caused by the fire is basically suffocating, consuming her.
@Mrs.Sandra13

Approaching the 3 year anniversary of this song, It really hits home as to where this song was going... after all that has happened... it finally makes sense. - BMR starting out as friends but ending in enemies - the media portraying her as some fiend until she strikes back - the media still echoing the same jokes of "careful she will write a song about you" - Joe just standing back and having to witness this all while she's trying to be happy - fighting for every ounce of work she has already done and having to redo them. - watching people who supported her before turn their backs

Base on my personal experience growing up, the line “I cut off my nose, just to spite my face” the way I translate/relate to it is that you’ve been through so much shit that it completely shattered your self esteem and you’re so down that you end up hurting yourself cuz “no one is gonna be with me anyways so what’s the difference if I look hideous, it doesn’t matter anyways, cuz I’ll be alone regardless”.

If you cut of your nose to spite your face it means you are mad at your face so you sacrifice your nose. An example might be, I tell my daughter she can’t use the car on Friday night and she reacts by saying,”fine, I don’t ever need your car again”, thus sacrificing her freedom because she is mad at me. In this case I would say to her “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”

I don't wish to speak of the whole thing unless in person but my ex followed me every lifetime. The night the Kanye call was made was the night he really started putting curses on us. He tried to get Clyde to reenact the day he killed a security guard who assaulted him in a Texas prison is the most I will say in detail right now. But they've been trying to keep history repeating itself while often erasing our memories so we won't figure them out. F that, I want my damn getaway car back they keep as a shrine at a primm Nevada museum. Like it's their sick trophy. Every lifetime we have only been trying to take down the corrupt leaders.. so like on ready player one, we had to go backwards to go forward. Remember what happen in past lives to know not to make the same mistakes as last time. Words are my weapon this lifetime. They try to keep me sheltered and shushed to protect their lies
