The 'celebrity' BBC team that Richard mentioned struck a chord. My dad was a Television cameraman, he started at the BBC in the fifties. He was based at Lime Grove for a while in the sixties and used to do popular entertainment programmes like '65 Special'. He always got an 'appearance bonus' when his camera was caught in shot, his payslips list the programme he appeared on and the length of time he was visible.

I don't know if other artists would want to do a deal like Taylor's with TikTok because I don't know what that deal was. Did TikTok agree to pay her what Universal were asking? Or did she agree to accept what TikTok were offering? Or did they compromise on something in-between? None of us knows. It may well be that she agreed to low royalties because she cares more about the publicity from being on TikTok than she does about the revenue she can make from TikTok, whereas other artists that aren't millionaires already are happy that Universal is standing up for them and demanding fair pay.

I wish there could be more celebrity based shows, it's a shame there are so few. Wouldn't it be great if we could add to the paucity of travelogues based around the adventures of two celebrity chums say, in a camper van or similar, or anything really, with celebs, doing stuff. It makes me sad but I live in hope. Oh, and more pop songs that would sound equally at home in musical theatre - there's definitely not enough of those along with interchangeable, earnest young men singing plaintive ballad sort of things.

@@Est-os9yc good shout, elsewhere on this thread people have said Penelope Wilton, who had occurred to me as well. I thought they might have cast a little younger, which I know sounds counter intuitive, but with four books and more on the way, casting actors in their late 60s and ageing them up for the first couple of films would be an understandable route to take.

Re: phone hacking, it was an open secret in the mobile phone sales industry. Everyone knew that there was a loophole with one networks remote access to voicemail (let's call it oxygen). All you needed was the phone number and the fact that the owner hadn't changed the default access pin from 0000 and you could listen to their voicemails. A lot of people made a lot of money from journalists buying details of celebrities mobile numbers if they signed someone up to the network that had this security leak

The interesting thing about Taylor Swift’s level of success is that, compared to the 80s icons Madonna, Whitney, MJ etc, she doesn’t really produce what you’d call “pop bangers,” particularly on her last four albums. It’s quite introspective sit at home in the bedroom and listen carefully to the lyrics sort of music, which given the enormity of her level of fame is I think quite unusual.

Forty years after Madonna, Michael Jackson and many others of the period were at their height, we are still hearing their music being played everywhere - radio, tv, sports grounds, shops, cafes, high street stores and supermarkets. By 2064, I bet that we won't be saying the same about the current crop of musicians, including Ms Swift. I think it means that things weren't investigated properly. That the police didn't do a proper job. She dominates because she gets marketed so ridiculously heavily. I get Spotify notifications about her all the time and I never listen to her music. She's shoved down everyone's throats. Milk it while she can. She'll be 40 soon and teens won't want to see an old girl up on stage talking about ex boyfriends.

Haha She's been a well-oiled machine in the sense of capitalizing on her previous relationships. I'm sure much of her audience is half her age and in the teen angst phase, so one would wonder how much longer she will have appeal by that demographic pushing 40.

Love the podcast, slightly uncomfortable with Richard so keen to draw Marina's opinion on certain topics while never venturing any himself.

wow what great insight, a show about fame and entertainment that would include discussions about one of the most famous women in the world.....what next a Kardashian

I wish this podcast wouldn't keep going too far down the political space. I get that Hugh Grant is an actor and this is why this is being talked about so much - but this seems much more like it should be a News Agents segment
