To me, this is the most heartbreaking song from this album. The fact, that she used the words tolerate it. It’s not even like this person is accepting this love, he TOLERATES it, like it’s an inconvenience for him. Also, the last part is so painful. She knows she could leave and look for something better. And she wants him to know, that she COULD, but there’s always that “I could, but I probably won’t”. And it ends the same way it started. She is watching him and probably stays in the relationship, which often happens in reality. This song is just perfection and the more I listen to it, the more meaningful it gets.

i think the ending is so sad because it's the realization that she's actually tolerating the relationship as much as he is. And that is heartbreaking

I actually interpret the 'you're so much older and wiser' as her repeating what he's told her, that she's dumber and doesn't know what she's doing. He's clearly the more dominant one in the relationship and I see her as a usually passive, long-suffering wife who has this sort of burst of outrage before settling back to watch him because her whole life revolves around him and his approval. And later on she's immediately doubting herself and looking back to him 'If it's all in my head tell me now, tell me I've got it wrong somehow' again looking for his approval 'like a kid'.
@loey9431
@loey9431 3 жыл бұрын
I had this same thought! Like an almost (but not quite) bitter or sarcastic way of saying "you're so much older and wiser, so clearly I'm the one who's in the wrong here, because you would know better."

In a way this song reminds me of the quote “we accept the love we think we deserve” This is why there are so many relationships where someone is being physically and/or emotionally abused yet stay in the relationship because they think they deserve the abuse Abuse victims will say stuff like “I shouldn’t have done this to provoke him/her” “he/she usually doesn’t get this angry” etc etc. and find these excuses to stay in then relationship

I loved this reaction! I love this song so much. I also feel like the lines where she's saying in the beginning "I sit and watch you reading with your head low, I wake and watch you breathing with your eyes closed" that maybe she means this guy is occupied with so many other things OTHER than her. She has all eyes on him and he is literally her everything (her temple, her mural, her sky) but she wasn't anything to him. I also feel like the line where she says "You're so much older and wiser" could maybe imply that she feels like BECAUSE this person is so mature, that maybe she is "interpreting" things wrong and that she's looking at the situation the wrong way. That she's "in the wrong". And she tries to get on their "level" of maturity by saying she's laying the fancy shit on the table, but that STILL doesn't work. No matter what she does to impress the person, it's still not enough and goes unnoticed. When she says "When you were out building other worlds, where was I?" It goes along with her saying that he is her everything, yet she wasn't even IN those other worlds that he built. She wasn't even a part of the equation. I also think the line where she says "Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life" is so so powerful. Footnotes are at the bottom of the page, which could mean she is at the VERY BOTTOM of his priorities. Also, footnotes add context to the story, but they aren't significant enough to be within the main body of the story. So in the story of his life, she isn't even a main character or involved, she barely is even "referenced". If you add these little references into the main story, it could disrupt the flow of the story, so perhaps even just her existence was a disturbance to him. "Always taking up too much space or time" Yet footnotes are small, and literally a quick glance/read. Finally, the fact that the song ends with the lyrics "I sit and watch you" which is exactly how the song started makes me feel like even though she SAID she was going to leave and stand up for herself, I feel like in the end, she didn't. That she'll continue to think "Is it all in my head?"

To me this is one of her best written songs ever. The emotion of it is so clear in the lyrics you can feel what it would feel like. At "use my best colors for your portret" you say you think she has an unrealistic image of him and thinks more of him than she should, I think that was kind of the point in that part. Meaning being in love with someone so deeply you almost see them as a god needing the best you can give him and try way too hard, think about him all day and think of all kinds of things to do so he knows how special you think he is. And then not having that returned like this is the absolute worst feeling ever.

I had never heard this song until a few days ago, and the first time i heard it it fucking hit my in the heart because this song perfectly encompasses me and my friends relationship right now. he was my best friend but some stuff happened over the last few months and now it just feels like he’s tolerating me- it’s a horrible feeling and the last part where it’s like “what would you do it i left, etc etc” made me start sobbing because i feel like ending my friendship with him but the thought of losing him and everything just being memories makes me so sad. in another way it already feels like i’ve lost him.

To me tolerate it felt like someone who is so pure hearted. Niave. Who puts in so much love and effort. When this person washes plates, he or she will make them glisten. Not just put in no effort. They notice everything. Because all they want is to be loved and appreciated. But instead this person is just tolerated. This person is taking up "too much space and time". When their love should be celebrated. Its really sad and i can relate with my family.

i resonate with this personally cause this is what my parent’s relationship is like. my mom has always loved my dad and he has just been indifferent to her feelings and ‘tolerated’ her throughout the years. he knew he couldn’t end it with her cause over here getting a divorce is a big taboo and so he just had to endure her throughout the years. and its not that my mom isn’t the ideal person to be with but its in my dad. he doesn’t like people i guess

Just got out of a 3 year relationship where he lied to me about actually loving me. Literally every lyric in this song is so relatable that it’s painful for me to listen. I literally made him my world, loved him unconditionally and tried my everything to make him love me but it didn’t matter. Unrequited love isn’t something that’s fixable. This song is definitely one of Taylor’s saddest but it’s beautiful.

Love your analyses. The barbed wire reference is from Invisible String on Folklore. When she stated he wrapped her past mistakes in barbed wire, protecting her from her past hurt and pain and inner demons. Here she is asking where is that man who tried to protect me from my inner demons, myself... that relationship is not the same and something has been severed.

What I love about her music is that it’s always multi faceted. There are multiple ways to see and apply what she says. One way is to see what the song meant for her personally and how it applies to what she herself was going through. And another is to see it in a way it applies to my personal relationships and emotions. For the general public, this song is about a one sided relationship. For me, it is about the parental child relationship. I have a tough relationship with my father and this song is emotional for me because I hold him in a very high regard and idolize him a lot. My parents separated when I was 2 and I only lived with my mother until I was 18. Then I came to live with him and I feel like he is a hero to me but he doesn’t see me as anything. I grew up missing him a lot. But he built a whole world for himself and now I am with him, I feel like he just tolerates all the things I do to show my love. That’s why I love her songs. It’s not always just for romantic relationships. You can apply them to how you feel as well

This song is very likely to be inspired by a book.. i forgot the title of the book but it was about a man whose first wife died, and he married another younger woman who looks like his first wife, and in that book, the woman would dress up in the colors similar to how the first wife did in a portrait. And apparently the said book was included in Taylor's book recommendations, thus confirming she has indeed read the book.

For me this music can also be related to her relationship with the fans, because in the lover era she “used her best colors” and knew her “love should be celebrated” but a lot of people said that lover wasn’t her best album, that it was their least favorite album from her, and I personally think it was a great album but A LOT of people especially in Brazil where I live through out a lot of shade about this album, I think part of the fans just couldn’t appreciate how she put all of her heart in that album 🥺❤️

I think the relationship picture is most likely a romantic one but the overall message and feeling could apply to other circumstances as well where you are being taken for granted. Regarding the use of "tolerate it" I was thinking how you can end up in a relationship where even the nice gestures annoy you if you don't love that person. The loving gestures can seem suffocating, they become unwanted or just ignored, because sometimes the context changes them. Like when you hate someone, even their chewing can annoy you. 😁 Love you guys, thanks for all the vids!

in a past interview, taylor was speaking about lgbt rights and she said that their love should be celebrated, not only tolerated. i think this song in a way speaks and deals about that. it's not the first time taylor has made a track about this topic (you need to calm down). nevertheless, what is important in my opinion is that, because of the way it is written, EVERYONE who listens to it relates to the song even though we all live very different experiences.

for me, tolerate it, means your partner never being there even you provide everything and do everything for your partner. She wants more, but her partner just tolerate her love or just want nothing for this rs. She basically wants everything and provide every thing including fancy stuff just for her partner. But her partners never show interest or never care about her. She know her love should be celebrate it not just tolerate it.

It’s like the whole time she was watching her partner unhappily being with her after like a hard work day of his as she was a housewife doing dishes at home and painting and it looked like he tolerated it, what should be her happiness. All those thinkings just went around her mind that she wanted to break free but at the end she just trying to sit and watch.

love your videos! to me this sounds like she is asking for her fathers approval. She does everything to please him or that person, who I think it’s definitely about a parent. And I think by “tolerate it” she doesn’t mean the love for her father or parent. She actually means her father doesn’t approve of her relationship to another person. So he just tolerates it and she wants that he is happy for her love, her love should be celebrated, but all he can do is tolerate it. This song has a very LGBT vibes to it in my opinion. Everyone can interpret it differently ofc. But this just makes the most sense to me and also why she used “tolerate”. If it was just a normal relationship why does the other person tolerate it? It’s basically her begging for acceptance and her begging to be happy for her and her love.

for me this song is abut the Scott and Big Machine records...is not the first time she talk about Scott as if, in the first layer of it, the relationship was romantic, and for me also another song is about this later on in this album titled Happiness... here I think specifically that she is talking about the time things were starting to look bad, but she was still under the label, so she looked how Scott started to act differently and all she can do at the time is look and watch carefully what he is doing and take note of how things start to become hard and she feel like he doesn't care anymore (while she is still doing her best, aka putting out albums with her best efforts like polishing things till they gleam and glisten)...seeing all that she ask what he will do if she left and ruin it all (aka change record label and end their partnership)...even if she think all that she is also still there open to listen to him giving an explanation or telling her that she is only seeing things and for the reassurance that those worries about how much he changed are all in her head...so she keep on watching in and pondering about it
