@@pigskinpoetry But then to take this, the cutesiest, fluffiest pop song in her repertoire, and turn it into a rock song - that's impressive. That's what really gets me about this - that it was this particular song she transformed. I wish you'd heard the studio version first, for comparison purposes. It's probably my least favorite song of hers, but I love it for her pettiness, and it worked. It was everywhere. Inescapable. taylor actually did perform with a few rock legends during the 1989 tour; she sang "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" with Steven Tyler and "Satisfaction" with Mick Jagger on her Nashville stop, and she later sang "You Oughta Know" with Alanis Morissette on her L.A. stop. I thought that was pretty cool. Also, yes, 1989 was the year she was born! That was her first official pop album, so she wanted to title it her birth year to symbolize a rebirth of her musical style.
@pigskinpoetry Жыл бұрын
I know all of those songs! Are those performances any good? When you're singing a legend's song, who sings backup?
@erinjkrizakk Жыл бұрын
@@pigskinpoetry taylor always makes sure to give her guest stars time to shine during her shows, so she mostly sings backup and occasionally does a solo verse during those songs. I really enjoy her performances with Steven and Alanis the most because she gels the best with them energy/voice wise. I'm not as big of a fan of her with mick jagger because she was having a bit of an off day vocally and (this is not an insult to taylor, more of a testament to mick jagger's incredible talent) her stage presence really doesn't compare to his. you can find all these performances on KZbin, but they're not professionally recorded, so they won't have the same sound/camera quality

Tbh she doesn't need anyone famous with her on stage to perform this, even if you say that might be better for you rock fans. Her main genre isn't rock, so having a rock influence on her pop songs isn't actually about making it whole hardcore rock but to show her versatility. That she has been so much around music that she can blend genres or enhance a particular song. Many will agree that this is her best performance of this song, and yess with her alone performing it.
@pigskinpoetry Жыл бұрын
I wasn't implying that it wasn't good or I didn't like it. It just feels like it's missing a solo for this type of music. And as an added bonus for fans of this type, it would have been cool to bring out some guest to rip an awesome solo. According to many other comments, she's been known to invite guests, so it would have just been one of those moments.

I didn't notice anyone give you the background info you were looking for, so i'll mention it here that this song, like the vast majority of the tracks on her Red album, is about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, the actor. They dated in 2010 when she was 20 and he was 29. He repeatedly left her and then begged her to come back, keeping her on a devastating emotional rollercoaster. There are many songs on that album about the misery and heartbreak of that situation, but this song was written when she was 100% done and refused to take him back anymore. As someone else mentioned, he hated pop music (only liked cool unknown indie bands) so she made the catchiest, poppiest song she could, knowing it would be inescapable from being played everywhere all the time, and would drive him crazy. Apparently he finally stopped calling her after that. Another song from Red that has this same sassy, shady "I'm over you" vibe about this relationship, but with a country feel, is "I Bet You Think About Me". They're both great songs with creative and funny music videos.

Hey! I really appreciate the video, been watching the TS reactions. What I'd like to say is that, when it comes to rock music for Taylor, that's about it. She doesn't have anything else that we'd classify as rock. She is an amazing songwriter and has albums classified as pop, country and folk. So I hope you go for her work in other genres with an open mind. I'd totally recommend I Did Something Bad (live at reputation tour), Out of the Woods (1989 World Tour), Anti Hero music video and All Too Well (The Short Film). About We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, the studio version is REALLY pop, very repetitive, and it was made like this because Jake Gyllenhaal (the guy this song is about) HATES pop music and we think she wanted to be a little bit petty hahaha

i would love if you would at some point react to some Panic! at the disco maybe? Brendon Urie, the lead singer of the band, is one of my favorite modern vocalists and some of the Panic! albums have clear rock infulence. i would say the last album of the band is in 70/80s rock style and it's recorded on analog tape, so old school style with no voice effects. Viva las vengeance is a lead single with rock and roll vibe, God killed rock and roll is very Queen like song and Don't let the light go out is a beautiful rock ballad with a guitar solo.
