Consulting is a good opportunity to gain broad experience, maturity, and the money to then do your own thing after wards. Some consultants leave to pursue their passions afterwards, be it working at startups, fitness training, art, medicine, restaurant and are very successful

One of the best things about consulting is that as you rise through the ranks you actually gain more and more independence. A partner may check in with a director a couple of times a week, but for the most part the director is running the gig. You have no manager looking over your shoulder every moment of the day. In my experience if the client is happy, work is being delivered and is high quality, and the client is paying the bills, you can be a director and partners pretty much will leave you alone while they focus on selling work to new clients. Once you gain that independence/autonomy and have been in consulting for a long time, it is difficult or impossible to go work in corporate where you have to report to an office and direct manager every day. That is why many who are in for a long time end up becoming consulting lifers.

Great video. Work/life balance is important. I'm 50 now, been doing accounting for years and most important is to not be stressed + get a good nights sleep + being able to enjoy your time off while not thinking about work. I am blessed to have all that now with a lesser role but I also get to keep my nice salary.

Wowzers. I can't imagine working 60-80 hrs a week. I work 37.5 hrs a week as a Systems Engineer and I wouldn't trade that for anything. Work-life balance, job contentment, and low stress matters to me more than a steep salary does. :)

Working for a consulting firm generally includes a non-competition agreement, where we agree not to quit consulting and work for the company we’re consulting for at the time, for at least one year after the job is finished. Consulting work is highly economic dependent. I was super busy for years then suddenly no work; I ended up working overseas because there wasn’t enough work at home with the company. And I was highly experienced, was a plant manager for 10 years prior to going back to school to get a business degree, and my work experience was in many different roles. I was a foreman at the age of 20. The opportunities I had consulting was working with the company management team from bottom to top. I’ve been a mile underground to the top floors of corporate offices. But the thing I noticed was once was consulting for over 10 years was that you only get glimpses of your “normal” friends lives because most of my jobs were well away from my home. My partner/ co-worker ended up being the top executive at the consulting firm I belonged after about 15 years. I traveled over a million air miles, long hours of air flights anywhere.

Early in my career 65-70 hrs was norm. 10 years later, flex schedule but can bump to 50-60 hours when needed, some sundays mixed in for a couple which I actually enjoy. 401k match, over six figs, performance based bonuses. Other companies offer company vehicle with gas card, and Corporate credit card but I get to expense my meetings so I collect travel miles as an added perk/incentive. Still no gas though .

Thanks for the video, the info. What you’re doing mirrors much of what I did starting out professionally (at the time one of the large accounting firms). And where I went to college (and high school) helped hugely in getting the job. I left the firm after three years, got a staff job, a good group, at higher salary and took a different direction ….. And like the schools, the professional firm has always looked good on my resume. You should have many choices for a career the way you’ve started out. The hard part, I guess, comes in making the right choices for yourself (work - and life) as the years go by. Your vid is very good as an intro to a start in professional life. You might offer it to the firm you work for, others too. You present well though you might slow the pace down JUST a little. Good luck with how/whatever you do.

One important thing that people do need to know about being a management consultant. You need to actually have relevant expertise and experience. You can't just come out of university and go to see a client and tell them what they're doing wrong. Life doesn't work like that. It can be a rewarding job, and you do basically get paid more money to compensate for always being on the road, but you don't just magically understand how companies work and how to improve them simply by joining a consulting company, or doing an MBA. A consultant is someone who borrows your watch and then tells you what time it is, followed by invoicing you for it. I'm a consultant and MBA by the way, but I specialise in cybersecurity.😎

I was looking into it consulting at a major firm prior to accepting my current risk analyst role. Total compensation ended up being the same and my friend who took the consulting job works 60-80 hours a week. On the flip side, I work 40 hours. So, per hour he makes a fair bit less. I'd assume that's why there's a high turnover at a lot of consulting firms, hours don't match the pay. I can see your KZbin channel becoming your career in the future, your presentation skills are really good.

Thank you so much!! Yep lifestyle change is definitely a key reason for turnover as well!

I am so grateful I found your yt channel. I am currently in the third year of my studies, which is consulting. English is not my first language but fluent speaking is obviously expected in this job in my country so now I can improve it while watching nice videos! ❤ I also love NYC and vibe of this city so I'm really excited for next videos 😇
