Hey Taylor, some advice from a heavy tech. If them lines are either bit loose (or any future line) tie your new line to your old one or a rope and start pulling. Usually in buses that “trough” holds everything but the lines and electrical shouldn’t be cinched down anywhere. I also have fittings on hand and usually put a male/male fitting to make one big line and then start pulling that way, it won’t be easy but in the world where a customer wouldn’t be happy with the “leave it solution” it usually works! Hopefully you get what I’m putting down. You’ve helped me in the past hopefully I can pass some knowledge🤙🏻

Starting the gen is easiest if you preheat for 15-25 seconds before first cold start. (15 seconds when ambient temp is closer to 100, 25 when ambient is closer to 30) Also, your fuel/water separator could be part of your issue, condensation is a huge issue with diesel RVs, and the most common thing to impede the engine or the generator. Generally speaking, Your f/w separator should be changed every time you change your oil, looks like it may have been skipped for the generators last service.
@keithdatSKRdrift11 ай бұрын
These diesel generators are set to operate at a set rpm, and only produce energy at that rpm. IE; energy load doesn’t fluctuate rpm like it does with smaller gas gens. I say that to say, if your generator is fluctuating in rpm, there’s an engine issue, and that, in combination with how dirty the f/w separator is is pointing me towards first replacing the fuel/water separator before doing a bunch more likely unnecessary work.

I’ve done what you did and run new lines I’ve also cut access panels in tunnels like that in conjunction with connecting new lines to the old and pulling. That being said you’re done, the only thing I might do is switch the hoses to adapters we use Parker or a hydraulic hose shop for fittings like quickly. As far as future working on them go to harbor freight and get a few 22 ton bottle jacks air over hydraulic are the best. Also buy a 1” impact (I runs an ingersoll) and 1/2” hose because eventually you’re going to have to pull wheels and you’re going to want the right tools for that. Lastly build a set of hard wood ramps to gain height to get under safely and easily, checking brakes is a good thing to do. Just my .02 in doing heavy duty repair for the past 10 years. Just wondering if you considered electric steering pump(s), so it just needs power to it and you can eliminate the pump and all the lines from the engine? Also, would love to see you build a tray drawer or something and clean up the Gen/bat bay.. roll in roll out with minimal effort and much cleaner on the wire nest you got at the moment. Come think of it, if it didn't eat too much space, it would make loading tyres and such much easier too, slide it out, stack em on and slide it back in. Set of bolt cutters would help get the old line out much easier (or most of it)

Taylor, I have been using a couple of 470 a/h agms for about 8 years now but mine are inside my house hooked into a hybrid solar wind generator system as a supplement for my 6.6kw grid tie solar When I started to install the bloody heavy batteries I decided that I didn't like that amount of weight sitting on the pallet I had put them on (it was cut down to appropriate size to keep them of the cold concrete floor that can effect charge retention.) I decided that the support of foam that came with each of them on the bottom was there for a good reason so I also (as it was the right size) put it under each battery for added support and insulation, I would suggest that as you are putting them in the bus it might be a good idea even just for added padding as you travel it won't cost you anything and might save a fortune, (my 2 where 1500$ for the both 8 years ago) Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺

Taylor, for filling oil into tight spaces (differentials, or like you PS reservoir), get yourself one of those $15 hand-held garden sprayers online or at Wally world; the kind you manually pressurize by pumping it up, and the you can cut the hose that goes to the spray wand. You can use it like that, but to cut off the oil flow once full, I add a ball valve to the line. This works good for any oil up to 140W. Better than using those expensive squeeze containers for gear oil.

BELTS - When I put new belts in any vehicle I put them in a plastic bag with a few ounces 303 Marine Aerospace Protectant for a couple of days. Shake em up every now and them, marinate them, half assed wipe them off and install. I've never had to replace one after that. It keeps them grippy and supple. Keep the bag, Ziploc, with the excess for the next belt job.

Man, that looks like a hard job. You should move the new lines from being tied to the engine block to tie to the chassis less vibration movement harshness on the rubber.

Would be great to see a Lithium battery/solar project on the bus. Would reduce or eliminate the need for the generator.

One other tip for filling up a tight access point is drill a small hole in a oil jug, and also a hole into the cap then feed a hose in, take your blow nozzle and force a bit of air into the container youll then start filing the tank up.

I guess my only question would be, how come you didnt tie the new line to the end of the old line and pulled it through so it was in that covered channel? I guess there is always a possibility of having it being bolted in, but is worth a shot instead of drilling holes into your bus.

I was thinking the same. that would of been the first thing I would of tried before routing the lines a different way and I wouldn't of left the old lines in there

May I say you guys are doing a fantastic job but with them battery’s why not make up a battery draw slide so it’s easier to get them in and out when needed, with the generator put that on a slide too so it’s easier to slide in and out

I agree completely.

Hey you can use gates dual seat screw together jic fittings to shorten those lines and get the right fittings on the right hose without needing to go get them crimped

Great job👍🏻

Use a Harbor Freight hand pump to transfer fluids from jug to reservoir next time. Also, use a solvent sprayer to clean the old fluids off when you’re “done and dusted” that’ll reduce the amount of road grime build up.

Congratulations on fixing the bus.

Taylor, when it comes to the power steering, instead of running the lines down the entire bus frame, why not put an electric pump at the front of the bus and have two short lines with a bladder for the power steering fluid, surely that would be a better long term fix. That way if it goes 9n you it would be a lot easier to fix on the road, just a thought.

would have to cap off the original power steering pump that's driven by the engine or preferred, remove it entirely and that can be a bit difficult, as unlike on most smaller vehicles, not everything is driven off the belts, some stuff is driven off the gearset normally used for timing the entire engine
@criticalevent11 ай бұрын
@@niteriderevo9179 Ya you would have to replace it with an idler or get a shorter belt but it would be well worth it for the ease of maintenance.
@niteriderevo917911 ай бұрын
@@criticalevent kind of missed the point, the power steering pump on that bus isn't belt-driven.. it's driven off the timing gearset.. kind of difficult to stub off if there isn't anything to stub it off with..
@criticalevent11 ай бұрын
@@niteriderevo9179 Oh well that's even easier, you have to do nothing but loop it out.

Hey Taylor food for thought built a generator slide bracket so the whole unit could slide out for serviceability and ease!

Need a black and silver Garage Built wrap on the bus. Race bus vibes.
@matthewromano880111 ай бұрын
that trough looked accessible in the middle where the tires where, it looked like that tray drops down and you get access to pull the lines from the middle of the bus and push them through.

Tap the itting with a air hammer really loosens them up where they're easier to get off

great stuff, enjoy watching the bus upgrade content...

Also those hoses can easily be cut shorter and have new fittings crimped on

Since the PS and engine share oil, buy oil in 5 gallon buckets and use the lid style transfer pump so filling the PS and engine during maintenance is way easier. That engine should take atleast a 5 gallon bucket of oil anyways.
