it’s great to see some anti-consumerism in the community!! i only made a few purchases this year like my 2022 planner and a 2 dollar lab notebook lol. i was also given a fountain pen so i might start using that all the time instead of buying more black pens (it’s one with a converter so i can refill from bottles too). i’m about to run out/ran out of a few things and i started seeing my stuff less like collectibles and more like what they are - consumable tools. i also kept using a notebook that had tons of extra paper despite finishing the class it was used for (which is a big thing for me, since i can get kinda weird about things having a designated purpose) and realized that instead of having a million colored pens that i never really used, i would rather focus on making my handwriting better to make things more beautiful, so i’m relearning how to hold a pen ! i have a death grip instead of tripod and i want to fix that

exactly like how on earth do you have so much stationary if you use ipad for note taking bruh(referring to study youtubers who do)

"Seeing stuff less like collectibles and more like what they are - consumable tools" YES. THIS IDEA CHANGES EVERYTHING! Most people own stationery cz it's "cute" but at the end of the day, it's a tool and is a waste if not used. I'm trying to incorporate this idea more and more into my own life and the more i do it the more i notice how deeply ingrained it is in our system to hoard things for aesthetics. Like Seo said, it's everywhere!
@iterumm2 жыл бұрын
@@saloni.sharma i was super guilty of the collectibles mentality when i got into the study community and thought i needed all the mildliners, etc just for the collection even though i only ever used the gray, and the one time i went to use another color it was dried out. that really was a moment where i realized it was so unnecessary for them to just sit on my desk for the looks. it’s such a small thing but it’s the small things that combine and combine to make me feel pressured to keep dried out highlighters for the aesthetic smh! my desk doesn’t have to be a performance
@saloni.sharma2 жыл бұрын
@@iterumm yeah! Same was the case with me... So many unused notebooks, pens, markers and even craft and journaling supplies just for the looks and i never use that much in my journal. They're really small things but have such an impact on both our physical and mental spaces. It's really something to reflect on... I'm just glad that this idea is coming up in discussions because it's so so important..

The consumerism and 'peer pressure' really mostly comes from social media. I keep telling myself if I just focus on my studies, and get my head out of all these websites and insta, I will not think abt buying anything because in any other day, there's nothing I lacked so I wld not think of buying anything

"the items that we have [or even the tools that we use], don't define our skills. the amount of time you spend studying [or trying to achieve said goals] and really focusing on your goals will make you a better student" 👏🏽 that's really well said. thank you! and furthermore: "in reality we need to spend more time focusing on ourselves instead of spending money on ourselves" aaah, these are such good quotes

Congratsss Seo, I'll be doing the "stationary no buy" hopefully in 2022 😅 You really are the true epitome of an influencer and I hope other study vloggers here on YT would have the same principle as yours. Most demotivated students are tricked in the facade of being an achiever by hoarding pens and stuff. In my case, I got obsessed in collecting pens since the peak of pandemic because I want to revive the student in me. I got pretty convinced having a lot of writing materials boosts studying (it's so common in KZbin and pinterest) . In the long run, I realized it was pretty detrimental because apart from spending a lot of money, I was wasting hours also scrolling over shopping sites to purchase again instead of trying to increase my productivity in studying. It kind of transcended into obsession. I'm grateful for this endeavor of yours and I do hope I'll succeed.

Thank you for inspiring more of the study community to do the same. Here’s to another year, Seo! 💓

Seo I appreciate your no buys so much!!! I have fallen into the trap of thinking buying something would make my life better and it is so important to recognise what I need is different from what I want just because other people have it. I really appreciate you sharing this experience with us! I was inspired to try a no buy in 2021 because of you and even though I failed sometimes I am still so grateful how better I was with my impulse shopping this year! I am ready to give it another go and adapt it to my needs in 2022 :) we are so grateful for you and support you so much Seo

i was watching this while browsing through some washi tape online and came to the realisation that maybe spending £20/$30 on patterned _tape_ of all things isn't the smartest decision considering i only have a very limited amount i can freely spend outside home essentials. i ended up deleting over half of the things i originally had saved in my cart after watching this and switched out some of the less practical stationery items for things i'm more likely to use. thanks for helping me save so much money on things i would otherwise probably only touch once every few months haha ^^

I'm so so happy that you started this Seo!! I started my no buy with you but in Feb because i was moving and i became so aware of the amount of stationery that i actually use. I only bought 5 pens and a paper cutter because i ran out of them and used up about 40% of my total stationery. (also, I'm never buying washi tape packs again lol) It's great that you took this initiative to encourage being mindful about what we spend on and what we use in this consumerist community. I'm really considering another year of sort of no buy but after restocking certain essentials. Like you said, setting aside a designated budget/item count or something like that. Thank you so much! And yayyyyy for our successful completion of the challenge 😁😁🥂 Also get better soon 😊

@@xychen0404 YES! THIS EXACT REASON! 😭 Also they literally never get used up easily unless you use them regularly which I realised that I don't 😅😅.. It's better to buy a few in neutral colors so they can be used everywhere... But i wish i knew it sooner 😂

Thank you Seo for sharing your progress! The consumerism in the community is really toxic and it's really great to see some influencer like you trying to go for an anti-consumerism effort! I dun usually buy a lot of stationeries, but this yr I spent quite a lot more since I haven't for like 2 yrs alr, plus I started earning incomes. I had been feeling so guilty and has been trying to go on a no buy for the last 2 mths. But it's terribly hard during such shopping season 😅 I will continue trying for the next 3 mths. Let's all work hard to contain the consumerism within ourselves and spend cool-headedly together! 🙋🏻♀️

I agree it sucks that people think pretty stuff will make you more productive, but for a lot of people it definitely helps/ is a hobby. If it makes someone happy to buy pretty notebooks, buy pretty notebooks. I think we need to focus on not equating 'things' with how we do in our studies but definitely not villainise buying these things altogether. So I agree with you there.

keep doing what you do!! so thankful for people like you who use their platform to speak about issues so pervasive in our online spaces. i've been running with the "only buy it if i REALLY need it" philosophy for several years now, and doing so has helped me take a step back and reevaluate how much stationery i actually use--there may not truly be ethical consumption under capitalism, but especially as students i think that if we are able to be intentional about where we place our money and what we support, we can still take steps to break down the unhealthy, consumerist philosophies that we might fall into in pursuing success. much love seo!!

My no buy stationary only last a year and a half lol, I realize when Im not buying stationary, I buy other thing just because I wanted it, at least with stationary, I can have many stuff with less budget, so when I finally can’t stand it anymore coz I want to make art project with washi tape, I break it and buy a bunch of washi… but the experience make me use my stationary more vigorously (especially stickers) before I buy lots of stickers but dont use it, because I feel its to much precious, but in my no buy time, I used my sticker with mindset that I can buy more if Im running out 😆

So after about 2 months I failed entierly at the nobuy since I've got a new job and was finally able to afford the things which have been on my wish list since forever ^^' I feel like now I have fulfilled all of my wishes - I've got the last item on christmas - and should really stop buying stuff even if it is on sale. I enjoy giving away stuff to friends & family, where I can really listen to what items they are looking for, showing some options to them and help them find the right items. I would often gift pens or post-its to friends of mine. And I really like being able to share some experience with these items. I will try to reduce my buying though. It is an "illusion of productivity" as someone once pointed out and I need to fight my depression and find joy in other things except staring at my pen collection...

imo blaming yourself as a consumer for your "capitalistic" tendencies just. feeds into capitalism? capitalism is bad but it's important to analyze it at the systemic level and not analyze ourselves as consumers but as a unified class against the bourgeoisie. therefore, while decreasing consumption is good, it's kind of like a stainless steel straw solution. glad to see you doing all of this though! lots of love
