Honestly, the "dont share your goals before exicuting" is TOO REAL. tbh it's probably best not to tell a lot of ppl just in case someone steals your ideas.

In my experience, talking about the business to others creates way more chances for connections and advancement for the business. This outweighs the risk of getting ideas stolen, but definitely that risk exists, yes. Ideas are cheap, execution is difficult. Then don't share the execution if worried.

I learned about keeping our goals to ourselves when I was learning about self improvement. It’s been scientifically proven that if we don’t share our goals, we’ll actually reach them. Sharing with 1-2 close ppl is generally ok. I’m glad you touched on this topic. Iv only told two ppl for my small business endeavor. Still haven’t revealed the name to them,as I get the legal stuff secured.

I love this, I'm currently on a journey to pivot from a product business to a service business. Sometimes I think about putting up a product business but regardless of what kind of business you put up, the same emotions apply. I also love that you were very open about your inconsistent motivation despite the number of followers you have. It's easy to assume that people like you who are ahead of the average people have it all figured out. But hearing that consistency is still the key that will drive your business to success is reassuring, especially for someone like me who's somewhat starting from scratch again.

The tip about setting a hard deadline is perfect for me. I have always procrastinated for schoolwork, and sometimes for a business it can be the same way. I've been a content creator in the doll collecting niche for 7 years. A popular business venture many people in my niche get into is sewing doll clothing (trendier and more mature pieces than what you can find in stores). I got into sewing over the pandemic and started an etsy shop. I went on a hiatus because I was too stressed about every tiny detail of my products but I've recently restarted my shop. I agree that having a KZbin channel helps you connect with your consumer much more than Instagram does, but sharing my photography on my instagram allows me to showcase my products more. I chose Etsy to sell on because despite the fees, it is the dominant marketplace for my niche, and my audience is already familiar with it. So many small business videos I see on KZbin are for sticker shops. I'm so impressed at how artistically talented everyone is and how many orders they pack! But as someone in a niche where every product is handmade and can't be outsourced, it's a lot more tedious and demanding to run a shop. 600$ is amazing for your first release! Keep up the good work!

This is a bit of a relief I must say! And you’re absolutely spot on, on some points. I’ve started my online business in late October this year and was hoping I’d have atleast a couple of sales by now, but no…. Zero! I’m a fashion designer, got my own website and marketing my self on instagram. The main issue that I’ve done is mainly get into the slow fashion luxury business. Sounds great. But sadly creativity doesn’t sell, if the price is too high! it’s always been a dream of mine to sell high quality garments, which my products are. It simply won’t sell! No matter how appealing it is to people. And because of the nature of the fabrics that I buy, I simply can’t just drop my prices. If I’d start all over again. I’d probably buy less affordable materials and go from there, cuz although I’ve just started out. You need a really good budget for runways, popups, marketing in order to sell yourself as a luxury brand. And as someone who’s starting out and already spent way too much on products and materials. It’s very difficult….

Thank you so much for this video. It really brought a lot of things to my attention that I didn't take into consideration, also not to sit and plan all the time instead of action. I'm a big over-thinker lol I have this idea of wanting to start my small business for awhile now. This video definitely gave me the motivation to just start!☺

This was a great video. I don't share anything with friends at all. I didn't let people know that I started my KZbin channel either. It's good you learned this stuff at such a young age. Thanks for sharing your journey.

My goodness!! No way! I went to CMU too :) computer science and art major sounds real intense!! Mine was business and psychology, although I’ve always wanted to do an art major. It’s amazing how you are able to juggle that!! Thanku for your tips and hope you are enjoying ur time at CMU. Couldn’t do it without God! ❤️ I started a small Etsy shop a few yrs ago for a bit but didn’t really get to dive into it, I’m trying to brush it up and get started again. It was a delight to come across your video!!

I like your business. A few ideas for you would be have you thought about manufacturing toys like a fluffy toy rabbit or duck would be cool. Children would love that and writing a story, a story with your animals for children would be cool also. Your branding is strong and your attitude is cool. Thanks.

Hey Johanna! Thank you so much for explaining this & it makes so much more sense now. My question I have is should I create a separate bank account when having a small business? I’ve been debating about this for a while now only because of the financial responsibilities that comes with owning a small shop itself. You’re recommendation will definitely help me! Thanks!

I had that question too (and still trying to see which is best) - You should look into a Sole Proprietor or an LLC. If you want to have a big business down the road and a lot more products and potentially hiring people, it would be good to have an actual BUSINESS bank account for growth. But for starters and if it's just you then you can actually just open a separate checking account to your existing account and strictly use that just for business expenses.

I was wondering if you could go over how you entered into the finances/taxes aspect of it. I just got a debit card and I was wondering how it would affect the taxes or how you researched manufacturers and websites to make your business? I love the video and it was super inspiring thank you so much!
