True Story: My aunt grew up two houses down from Brad Dourif. She's the definition of a Holy Roller and is part of 3 church prayer groups. Even though her dementia is getting bad, to this day she hasn't let it slip to any of them she gets a Christmas card every year from the guy who's voiced the most famous demonic doll in horror movie history for 35 years😂😂😂. He even signs "Your friend til the end... Hidey-ho"

In this one he is one of the authorities on the 4-wheeler that discovers the kids on the beach at end, he says “You better call Harvey,” which I believe is a reference to producer Harvey Bernhard who collaborated with Donner throughout the 70s-80s.

This movie got my dad a million dirty looks when we saw it. He was 90% asleep (Just worked a 16 hour shift), and when Chunk told Sloth that he was gonna live at his house, my dad said loud as hell *"I bet his dad'll be f***ing thrilled. What do you even feed that thing???"* He didn't realize he said it out loud til my big brother and I busted out laughing along with most of the dads in there. Every mom turned and gave him the look of death, and my poor mom covered her face til everyone else left.

Considering what his family was feeding him, I don’t think Sloth cares much about what you feed him, just that you do feed him. The parents might be happy that they at least don’t have a picky eater to deal with. the actor who played Chunk was voted homecoming king by promising to do the truffle shuffle at football games. He is now a Hollywood contract lawyer and was at the awards with Ke Huey Quan because they are still friends. Anne Ramsey the evil mom was a legendary character actress and she got more acting roles after the throat cancer. the mom of the good brothers was also the mom in Monster Squad. If you have not seen Monster Squad, it is basically the same type of kids' adventure except they are fighting Dracula, Frankenstein, wolfman, mummy, and gill-man.

The part of Sloth was played by the late great John Matuszak. He was a 6'8" defensive end who'd played for the Raiders and won two Super Bowls with them. Matuszak's personality landed him on commercials, guest appearances on talk shows and TV shows before landing the role of Sloth on The Goonies.

Loved the reaction. The thing about The Goonies is that for those of us lucky enough, like me, to have watched this as a kid, in the 80's, is that it seemed completely possible to have this kind of adventure. Nothing seemed too fantastic or impossible through our eyes. As adults, yes you see the ridiculous, but this wasn't The NeverEnding Story or Time Bandits or The Explorers. This seemed real, IMO anyways.

The summer of 1985 was magic. I was 11 and we didnt know what we were about to watch. I spent the summer with my sister & cousins looking for adventure, scaling ravines, crossing rivers, riding our bikes further than ever before. We were Goonies too and our best treasure was our friendship. 💙☠

Corey Feldman didn't want to do this movie because Friday the 13th Part 5 was filming at the same time and it was going to be about the character he played in part 4. His parents made him do this movie instead, and they were obviously 100% right.

Part 5 is one of the worst entries in the Friday the 13th series, but it would have been a very different film if Corey had starred in it. They rewrote it when he dropped out. He does still have a small cameo in that movie.

Also, during the scene where they were messing with the pipes and there's a shot where the camera zooms in on Corey Feldman's face as he yells "Reverse pressure!" That shot took so many takes since Feldman didn't have the energy to shout out the line. That was until he found out that Michael Jackson (Whom Feldman was a big fan of at the time) was coming and visiting the set. That shot of Corey screaming "Reverse pressure" was really him getting excited about MJ visiting the Goonies set.

I love that so many of the Goonies actors were publicly celebrating Ke Huy Quan's Oscar win. This movie is almost 40 years old and many of the cast still seem to be friends. In an age when it feels like friends can be hard to make and keep I found it touching. Also...I feel like the parents might all have been charged with child neglect if this were set today. These kids, unsupervised, almost died multiple times in caves underground. PS: The pirate ship set (the Inferno) was real. It was 105 feet long and took more than two months to build. After filming they couldn't find anyone to take it (for free) so they had to break it down.

@@theaterbear How deep did you get? :D Though it was a few years before this film, around 1976 (aged 6) I tried digging a tunnel from my back garden to my friend's house who was two doors up (rural village, large gardens). My digging was though kinda ignored by my parents (I guess they didn't think I was serious) until I started talking about needing roof supports because now I was going sideways. :D That's when they put a halt to proceedings, and then it rained anyway, completely filling the hole (which kinda creeped me out for some reason, I didn't like deep water). My friend made similar progress I think, likewise stopped by his parents eventually, and the weather. Oh well, no matter. Another time, the village kids tried building a mini hydro dam thing across the main stream/river on the other side of the nearby field, backed up the river so much it flooded several back gardens. :D It started a craze of dam building, we got pretty good at it, and every time the dam broke it washed away lots of sediment, revealing loads more fossils along the stream banks. Some of the fossils were so good, someone came to visit from the British Musem in London to have a look (my brother, 3 years older than me, was mad about fossils at the time).

Timeless...absolutely timeless...one of the true greats, this movie. Fantastic cast, fantastic script, it doesn't 'talk down' to the audience...and it truly never gets old. Also, I think there were only two of the main cast who didn't go on to have extensive careers in movies - Kerri Green/Andy, and Jeff Cohen/Chunk. That being said, though, Jeff Cohen and Ke Huy Quan have stayed close ever since this movie, to the point that Jeff is now Ke's entertainment lawyer. Hence the "Goonies never say die" shout out at the Oscars.

I grew up on this movie. My kids grew up with this movie. I can honestly say I’ve seen it over a hundred times. I have an opinion or little viewpoint on nearly every action and line that occurs, much to the annoyance of those watching with me. And yet I have never had the thought about Rosalita leaving with the jewels. I legit lol’d at the plausibility and humor of the idea of her just disappearing with the loot. So kudos for adding another little perspective to an old favorite!

Highly recommend the novelisation of the film, by chance I'm reading it atm. Told from Mikey's point of view, it has some nice backstory and some extra scenes not present in the film (or maybe they were shot but cut from the final edit, eg. a confrontation between the gang and Troy in a diner, Brand helping out just in time). The pirate ship reveal at the end chokes me up every time.

So some trivia. The parents at the end were their real life parents (except Mikey a Brand) They were not shown the pirate ship so their reactions were real. The actress who played Steph was River Phoneix real life girlfriend, the actors who played the Fratelli brothers hated each other in real life, Sloth was played by an American football player who sadly died of a heart attack a year later. Other suggestions in the same vein would be The Lost Boys, The Explorers, Adventures in Babysitting, Iron Eagle, Neverending Story and Flight of the Navigator. Red Dawn is kinda in that same vein lol. The Librarian movie and series and the first two mummy movies are in the same vein as Indiana Jones. You might also want to give Deep Rising, Dick Tracy, Expendables, Remo Williams (has Earl from Tremors), Shoot Em Up. Short Circuit, The Wraith with Charlie Sheen, Hook with Robin Williams, Labyrinth, Legend with Tom Cruise, CHUD, Night of the Creeps (same director as Monster Squad), The Blob (original or remake) a look.

Love me some Deep Rising. My friends and I met Stephen Sommers at a screening for The Mummy. He was outside the theater when we came out and he talked to us for like 15 minutes before he got dragged away. Really cool guy.

Yes there was a show about a young Indiana Jones. It was called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. I remember it pretty fondly. 😊

The Gremlins reference was because both movies had the same screenwriter Chris Columbus, and apparently they are part of the same universe. Sloth wore the Superman t-shirt as it's a nod to Richard Donner's Superman movie.

I was born in '74. I think being a kid in the 80s was exceptional bc of the movie magic all created without CGI plus children were becoming a big demographic group for the industry to point its canons at.. We just got showered with the most awesome movies for an entire decade. The Goonies definitely have this typical 80s Spielbergian feel to it. One just can't deny Spielberg simply having ruled fantasy of 80s kids.

I've seen this film more times than I can remember. I'll say it: the '80s were a great time to be a kid. One of my favorite bits about this is that Mikey's big scene with Willy near the end wasn't in the script, but Richard Donner thought the two needed a moment together...it's funny knowing that, as that was always my favorite scene in the movie. For ages they talked about a sequel, but the idea never seemed to make sense to me. What they really should do is make a film about the pirates and how they ended up as they did, explaining how the map got out, why everybody died, why Willy made all the traps, etc. I think that would make much more sense than a sequel...I mean, what could you really do with a sequel?

Sad part is that pirate ship was really built , it was actual working ship and after the movie was done filming they try to give it to any amusement park at the time. But there was no takers for the ship. So they had to destroy it. Just think if that ship was around now , how many people would pay to walk on it , take pictures, people were just not forward thinkers. Missed opportunity at the highest. I love this movie growing up. It spoke to us as children, going on adventures with our friends in the neighborhood.

Something I love: Chunk, in real life, because a big time entertainment lawyer. He represents Ke Huy Quan, and Ke said that Chunk (Jeff Cohen) was instrumental in getting him his role in EEAAO. Ke thanked him in his acceptance speech and it was delightful.

Since you popped just after Storm Akima did.. trivia here too! 1) The hat Jake wears at the beginning was apparently one of the ones from Temple of Doom. Spielberg said he took it and brought it over to this set, and thus it ended up on Robert Davi's head! 2) Joe Pantoliano went on to be in Memento, and Cypher in The Matrix. 3) I went to Berkeley for university, just 1 year behind Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk! (And I never found out until after he'd graduated 'cause not a lotta internet back then..) But he was elected our student body president, and apparently he'd do the Truffle Shuffle during our football games which got all the students cheering like MAD.

The large rock in the ocean that Sean Astin's character views through the coin is off the coast of Canon Beach, Oregon. The houses in a town more to the north called Astoria. As a kid growing up in the 80s in the Pacific Northwest, it was cool to have this movie and Stand By Me filmed nearby and with actors of a similar age. The movies inspired a lot of kids living in my area to go outside and go on "adventures" further and further from home, and be more independent.

When Sloth rips off his shirt revealing the Superman symbol, complete with John Williams sound theme, that's a reference to Richard Donner's Superman movie, the same Richard Donner who directed The Goonies. A self-referential reference. To this day there is one of the funniest jokes I remember: - Okay, Michael Jackson didn't come to my house to use the bathroom. But his sister did. In the dubbed version for my country he was even more funny: - Well, Michael Jackson never came to my house... to poop. But his sister yes!
