The scene where they get inspiration from the black church to play the blues is both literally and figuratively how the blues originated in the first place. It's kind of like Jake and Elwood are giving out a history lesson on Chicago down home blues, and Belushi really did love the blues. He can sing, FOR REAL. Check him out! You'll see why a sketch comedy act from SNL had two EP albums go gold in the rhythm & blues section of the record store not next to Weird Al in the comedy section. They actually were a legit band ❤

People often don't realise how well structured the movie is. The insanity slowly increases in every scene desensitizing the audience to just how bizarre this world is. If the flying NAZI car scene had happened earlier in the movie it would have had people ignored the rest as just a stupid movie but by the time it actually happens you're OK with that level of madness which then makes the entire Illinois national guard running around shouting hut hut hut a perfectly normal thing. And an international super model waiting patiently at a sleazy motel for a guy who hasn't washed or changed his clothes in eleven days only a little outlandish.

Fun fact- During the filming of this movie As they were shooting the mall scene overnight and they broke for lunch, Belushi disappeared! The whole crew started searching for him. Dan Ackroyd wandered into the little neighborhood next to the mall and went to the only house with the lights on. He knocked on the door and the homeowner told him that Belushi had stopped by, got food from his refrigerator and was now sleeping on his couch! Belushi was so popular at that time that he sometimes wandered off during filming and he was happily welcomed in the homes of complete strangers! Ackroyd called him " Americas guest"!

6:53 - This ole fella is legendary singer, bandleader, entertainer Cab Calloway! He was huge on the big band, swing, vaudeville, and jazz scenes during the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. He stayed active in the biz until his death in 1994. It was because of his legend in jazz that Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi made sure he was given the part of Curtis in this movie. Calloway was a noted performer in legendary venues such as the Cotton Club. He truly was a masterclass legend in music, and is one of the people responsible for shaping popular American music. There's been many documentaries done on this man, but frankly, I'm surprised that Hollywood has yet to do any major biopic film on him yet. It's a mystery, really.

Being a native of Joliet who was 14 years old when this premiered, it was a big part of my teens. That fall, my Catholic high school’s Homecoming Week theme was “We’re on a mission from God” and we had a Dress Like a Blues Brother Day. In my Milwaukee college four years later, my drama professor was Father Gerald Walling, who played the shorter of the two guards escorting Jake across the.Collins Street prison. When he found out I was from Joliet, he had fun telling a few stories of his couple of days filming there, mostly of how weird it was filming in a working prison.

It's funny, I have a couple of bootlegs/radio broadcasts of the original Blues Brothers band (opening for the Grateful Dead on New Year's 1978 and another from summer 1980 come to mind) and Elwood introduces them as hailing from Rock Island, Illinois. Either Joliet and Rock Island are really close to each other or Elwood couldn't make up his mind! Edit: after looking it up just now, it seems like they're sort of one and the same. Rock Island appears to stretch from Chicago proper southwest to Joliet. Great stories, by the way.

I was 12 and went to Joliet Catholic a couple years later. Watching this in a Joliet theater was surreal- the whole theater erupted when the movie opened at the prison with Joliet, Illinois on screen.

I was 7, and my family went downtown to the Rialto Theatre (before restoration, so it was a slightly crumbling movie palace instead of the glorious building it is now). When the opening credits ended and the first text on screen said, “1936 Joliet, Illinois”, well, I have never heard an eruption of whoops and applause like that before or since!

Then just slowly turn up the speed and absurdity notch by notch. Each time just going just a bit grander and faster than the previous scene setup. This way you keep escalating tension and excitement as well as forcing the viewer to start suspending more and more of their disbelief. 3:14 - Gary Indiana. Back in the 1950s-70s it was one of the largest steel processing areas in the world. By the end of the 1980s it collapsed pretty heavily in the US industrial recession and still has had a hard time recovering. 3:55 - Jail possession officer is Frank Oz (a.k.a. Yoda, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, etc) 6:01 - Kathleen Freeman, a pretty well known sitcom actress, as the nun. Born in Chicago. She was in many Jerry Lewis movies. 6:53 - The legendary Cab Callaway as Curtis Blues. 7:30 - The King of Soul, Mr James Brown. Note: Chaka Kahn, the Queen of Funk, is in the church choir. 10:10 - Yes we have Miss Piggy. Her voice was back at 3:55 10:50 - 103 more cop cars left to destroy. This is Dixie Square Mall, it was an abandoned mall by 1976. The Board of Education temporarily used it as a school while waiting for a building that was in construction and behind schedule. After this John Landis leased it from the School district in 1979. It remained closed with some remnants of the movie for over a decade slowly decaying in a partly demolished state. 11:25 - Carrie Fisher ended up getting engaged to Dan Aykroid. They eventually broke it off when Carrie Fisher went back to her old boyfriend, musician Paul Simon, which she then later married for awhile. Maybe a rocket launcher was one of the 50 Ways To Leave A Lover. 14:09 - Those are all their real names. All the band members in the Blues Brothers are real musicians. Every single one of them are legendary musicians who have played in some of the most famous soul bands that existed. 16:33 - Henry Gibson as the Nazi leader. He was well known from the Laugh-in series and from working with Jerry Lewis. The Illinois Nazi party won a first amendment court case in 1978 against the suburb of Skokie, Illinois allowing them the right to march. Dan and John felt it fun to put their spin on the feelings on the matter. 17:18 - One of the few realistic depictions of the Chicago Maxwell Street market on film. It was a massive cultural center for music, food and people having an open air market every Sunday. Not long after this film politicians got away with a large scandal by legally claiming this was Urban Blight. Many groups tried to get it protected as a historical cultural landmark but the process kept getting 'lost' or 'stalled'. They eventually forced all the lower income individuals to leave under eminent domain. Part of the land was sold to the University of Chicago for expansion, the other part was quickly sold to upper class condo developers via some very sketchy transactions. Many of the actions were essentially viewed as illegal later on, but by that point all the buildings had been torn down and turned into a gentrified area. 17:27 - The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. 18:19 - This film is a backdoor musical. Hollywood has pretty much killed off the Musical, but John and Dan still had great love for the genre. So the concept for The Blues Brothers was to create a musical that the studio was just an Adventure Comedy. 19:20 - Subtle character subtext, only eating plain toast is a sign of long-term alcoholism. The alcohol has destroyed their ability to eat much other than simple well-cooked carbohydrates 19:22 - Ray Charles 37:00 - They just needed an excuse to drop a car from a helicopter over the Chicago skyline. 40:15 - Tax assessor clerk is Stephen Spielberg

Cab Calloway was a singer and performer from the late 20’s through the 90’s. His big era was the 20’-30’s and into the 40’s but mostly famous during Prohibition in the 30’s. Basically invented Scat, a form of singing which he demonstrated in the movie. I got to see him live in Seattle in the 90’s a few years before his death. Even in his 80’s the man was electrifying and mesmerizing to experience. One of my favorite shows ever, SO GLAD I got to see him perform!😃

1980 gave me three of my favorite comedies. The Blues Brothers, Airplane!, and Used Cars. Wish someone would react to Used Cars. When I saw this in the theater, the SWAT team yelling "hut hut hut" cracked me up. Just when I stopped laughing about it, they cut back to them repelling down the columns "hut....hut.... hut". Another joke that got me was when the two nazis were falling to their death and one turned to the other and said "I've always loved you". The only physics this movie was concerned with was Looney Tunes physics.

Dan Akroyd was the blues fan, Belushi was mainly a metal/punk vocalist originally. Akroyd persuaded him to sing in his band after having him listen to one of his main influences, the Downchild Blues Band, a Canadian blues band CURRENTLY on its farewell tour. Catch them if you can!

Many of us 80s kids grew up rewatching this movie an unhealthy amount of times then spent the rest of our lives quoting it. This movie is bonkers so i knew you two would love it considering you loved how crazy Raising Arizona was (especially RA's chase scene). Love the channel!

John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd from Saturday Night Live fame had a skit where they dressed up as bees and buzzed in a bluesy way that morphed into an ongoing skit as the Blues Brothers where they and this band performed. Those skits were so well received that they eventually made this movie. I'm pretty sure this was the first of many movies from SNL that started as a skit for the show and became a movie later on ala Wayne's World, A Night at the Roxy and a few others. Awesome reaction guys :)

LOVE this movie, Dan Aykroyd & John Belushi released 3 albums as The Blues Brothers ( 2 live albums & the Official Soundtrack Album), they even had a number 2 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 With a cover version of 'Soul Man'

They were a real band, and April 22, 1978 went down in history as the day The Blues Brothers made their world premiere on SNL, they were also cast members. Among the many vehicles in the movie, the production team bought the entire fleet of retiring Chicago police cars, 64 of them at $400 each. They set the record of 104 cars destroyed during filming, the sequel in 2000 set the new record by 1 with 105 cars wrecked. The mall destruction was done in a mall that had been abandoned for a year. I read somewhere that they spent upwards of $30,000+ to refurbish a lot of the storefronts (Toys-R-Us) and restock the window displays. Certainly is fun to watch, but imagine being one of the teamsters getting to do the driving. Fun fact, @10:43 John Landis was the cop driving the police car that flips upside down in the mall.

The lead Nazi is Henry Gibson. Prior to this movie he was best known as a regular on the sketch comedy show "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In". He used to hold a big flower and recite poems, which kind of made him being cast as a Nazi a joke in itself.

One of my fave films of all-time - glad you finally got to it and loved it (how can you not). Dan & John were on the way out of SNL when they were in production for this - the first off-shoot SNL film BTW. Fun fact - during filming one day on location John was MIA and Dan went searching in a nearby neighborhood going door to door and finally found him - he had been exhausted and knocked on a random home's door and said "Hi, you know who I am; could I get a bite to eat and crash on your sofa?" and the family literally did just that (Dan called John "America's Guest" from that point on). I even have a huge framed poster of them w/the quote about "106 Miles to Chicago - it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses'" in the alcove of my apartment. Jim actually had a small stint on SNL shortly after his big bro died (both did Second City improv in their native Chicago) and made appearances w/Dan in live concerts for years after. RE: Landis - I urge you to seek INTO THE NIGHT another crazy quilt comedy loaded w/random cameos starring Jeff Goldblum & Michelle Pfeiffer.

Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi started the Blues Brothers act back in 1978 as a warmup act for Steve Martin. Later on they brought the act on SNL. It got so popular that it made this movie possible, but it was also a project they just worked on on their own. They have played concerts and released several albums. Even though it was in many ways technically a comedy act they took the music seriously, and if you happen to enjoy that style of music, their albums are well worth giving a listen.

The priest in the church is James Brown and the one lady in the choir is Chaka Khan . Ms. Chicken Wings is Aretha Franklin. In 1980 (I'm 62 today) it was an absolute cult film here in West Berlin, Germany and has remained so.

Just for a little fun info: the budget for "Star Wars" (which was released a mere three years before this film) was about $11 million. This film was shot for $27 million due to, among other factors, the numerous appearances by musical superstars and the vast amount of vehicular destruction. ("The Empire Strikes Back" which was also released in 1980, only cost $30.5 million to make.)
