that guitar was an antique and one of a kind, worth tons of money. it was loaned to the production. Jennifer knew this. it was supposed to be switched out before it was smashed. Kurt did not know this. her reaction to the smashing of the guitar was a true reaction to the expenaive antique being destroyed. it was left in the film. once you know the story, you see how her reaction didn't really fit the scene.

I love that in the flashback, Minnie clearly has no issue with Bob and is really nice to him. It was one last test by the Major to see if he was telling the truth. If he really knew Minnie, he'd know she had no problem with Mexicans

Seeing this in theaters on Christmas in 70mm was the best experience I ever had. Prebooked and assigned seats that were uber comfortable, hot coffee and pastries brought straight to you and the movie shown in two parts with a break in between so you could stretch and discuss the movie with others. We also got some goody bag with cards bout the characters and an autographed poster. It was really awesome

Tarantino insisted on filming this with the old fashion 70MM film stock camera not digital which Hollywood had been using for years. His love of old movies also lead him to use veteran film Composer Ennio Morricone who won his only film score Oscar win in his long career. He was given an Honorary Lifetime Oscar also.

The movie was HIGHLY inspired by John Carpenter's The Thing. Even the score was by Ennio Morricone who scored that film and they used some of The Thing's actual score while they were vomiting from being poisoned and also trying to cut a deal with Samuel L Jackson.

In this score Morricone shows his gorgeous love and admiration for Igor Stravinsky. There are beautiful and well constructed melodic referrences like the beginning of the Psalms Symphony fugue and berceuse from Firebird. I'm so happy he won the Oscar with this music because Tarantino let him free to let his classical background from accademic studies to explode.

@21:35 fun fact, pulling focus is 1 specific persons job in during filming (1 per camera). The cam op holds/controls the camera, the AC (1st AC, 2nd AC, etc) pulls the focus. They do it with a little device a little larger than an iphone with a little wheel for each lense, that adjusts the focus based on mms.

I drove three hours to a theater that was set up specifically for a special 70mm showing. For those that don't know, prior to digital projection, movies recorded on film were shown in theaters in either 35mm or 70mm format. 70mm was basically the IMAX of it's day. The screen was a little wider but not as high. Tarantino made this movie in 70mm, because it was his favorite format when he was younger. The film textures, color and grain was simply gorgeous on the screen.

She's been in many movies over the years. If you saw 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High she played a teenager who got pregnant in High school. Her career took off after that.

Fun fact guys, the music was originally made for the movie The Thing but they were scrapped and Tarantino asked Ennio Morricone if he could use that unused soundtrack for this movie. Also Kurt Russell also was in The Thing and the plot is similar with people being suspicious of one another in a secluded place filled with snow. Tarantino said The Thing was an inspiration for this movie. Another fun fact this was supposed to be a Django sequel with Django just stumbling into this whole scenario but he took him off the script because he didn't want the audience to resonate with a character or have a "good guy" in the movie, your supposed to hate all of them they're all horrible people lol

Excellent, this is a great movie. Don't forget about "Once Upon A Time in the West" which is the best of the Sergio Leone westerns IMO and is preserved in the Library of Congress. Tarantino loved and was definitely influenced by the Leone westerns. Thank you.

Saw this in 70mm with a film meetup group at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, Ca. Full house, huge screen, everything AWESOME. Watching this with you guys was even better! Great critique/discussion after and ya'll hit all the notes and points. I watch a lot of reactors but seem to be settling in to which types of movies I like to watch with who. You guys are my goto for movies like this; expansive and more involving flicks to be discussed over drinks afterwards. Mentioned earlier that I used to see movies like this with a meetup group but ya'll pretty much took over that role. You're also both of the nicest people I've ever seen doing this. So many people (including myself) didn't catch this the first time around but Django's saddle is on top of the bodies Warren has piled on his horse! Some people think Warren killed Django and others (myself included) thought that Django's riding days were over and he gifted it to him!

@22:20 Great bit of trivia about this movie. Kurt Russel was supposed to smash a duplicate prop guitar in this scene. Instead, he smashed the original 150 year old guitar (loaned from the Martin Guitar Museum) that Jennifer Jason-Leigh played which was supposed to be swapped out for a worthless prop. When she is shouting "Whoa whoa whoa!!!" in this scene, it isn't planned dialogue, she realized he was about to smash the real guitar against the support beam which hadn't been switched yet. ....bye bye museum guitar....

I saw the roadshow version in theaters. It was basically a music overture lasting a few minutes before the movie starts, and a 15 minute interlude halfway through the movie like the old long epic movies from the 50s/60s so that the audience could get up and stretch or go to the bathroom before the movie continued.

The Guitar at 21:18 was a super important extremely valuable guitar that QT borrowed, one of 12 I think in the world that's left to enjoy, borrowed it from I guess a museum or someplace like that somehow. As you see this scene unfold, Kurt Russel was suppose to smash a prop worthless guitar but instead the real valuable guitar got mixed in and smashed. Opps!! A mistake was made as everyone thought it was the fake prop guitar. Money was paid for the mistake but this guitar was a classic so it still hurt the owner.

Also the old man says earlier in the film " My son came up here for his fortune" so it actually proves that his son rly did try to kill warren for the bounty money and warren rly killed him but who knows if he did what he said he did to kill him . I think its pretty safe to say he was telling the truth. Also the dialogue in the beginning of the film was great.

Tarantino wanted that huge and wide screen (Panavision) look to the film, like the great Western filmakers such as John Houston used. He found the huge cameras they used in storage and had them restored and film made to fit them so he could shoot in the same style.

I first viewed this film about eight years ago. All I remember of it was that it involved several characters, who were all suspicious of each other and that in the end almost all of them were dead. But that is usually the MO of Tarantino, everyone dies! This reminds me of a similar film that was released in 1965, 'Ten Little Indians!'

@@josephirizarry5195 Unfortunately no, man! It was in LA. We also watched Death Proof, Kill Bill 2, and Once Upon together. He attended the Django screening too, but I missed that one. We chatted a couple times in the lobby. He's a friendly dude. I always wanted to see a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse. I've heard such cool things about that place! Sounds like an absolute blast!

The late, great Ennio Morricones' penultimate Film Score and the one that *finally* got him an (regular) Academy Award after five nominations. Also the only Tarantino-Film (so far) to even have an Original Score.

I’ll just add one more thing. Bruce Dern. That guy adds so much to any movie. Even when a movie just doesn’t do it for you, you know that the part Bruce plays going to be good. He has stage presence. He is always a little bit off. Great character actor.

He always stands out in a performance, whether as a lead (the beauty pageant satire "Smile", "The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant") or a supporting role ("The Hateful Eight", "Last Man Standing").

Seeing JJL break character when Kurt smashed the guitar is such a bloody strange moment. When I first watched the movie I had no idea that the guitar was a museum piece. I have a hard time believing that a guitar like that would have been on loan when replicas had been made for just this scene. However, I wasn't there, so I don't know.

The guitar that Kurt Russell smashed was an authentic museum piece!!! He wasn't supposed to smash it, that's why Jennifer Jason Lee was so shocked!

Hey you two! Even though this isn't one of my favorite Tarantino films, I still enjoyed it quite a bit, and, of course, enjoyed your commentary as well. Also, the acting was entertaining as ever, with a lot of our Tarantino regulars re-emerging. I know that you two recognized Zoe, Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, etcetera, and I'm pretty sure you caught Tim Roth (Pumpkin from Pulp Fiction/ Mr. Orange from Resevoir Dogs/ Four Rooms/ and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood) in this one. As for Jennifer Jason Leigh, she's been in quite a few BIG movies over the years, though the one that you probably recognized her from was Road To Perdition which you two viewed about a month ago. (Yeah, she was Annie Sullivan, Tom Hank's Wife who didn't last long ;^) But anyway, she is a virtual chameleon in her various roles, which you'll notice whenever you watch Fast Times At Ridgemont High and others. Just For The Record: She's also in my third favorite Coen Brother's movie: The Hudsucker Proxy. My Top Two Coen Bros movies being: O' Brother Where Art Thou (which really should have won Best Picture), and Fargo, of course. Thanks for all the great reactions. . . Keep up the great work. Mateo

Kurt Russell really actually destroyed a priceless 145-year-old Martin acoustic guitar. He thought it was a prop look alike for the scene where he snatches it and smashes it and actually destroyed the real one. When Daisy started yelling "NO NO NO" when he snatched it that was her true reaction to him smashing the priceless one.

Oh! And one other thing. . . The title of 'The Hateful Eight' actually originated with the fact that this was QT's eighth solo film, and he wanted to work the number in there to be clever.

In fact the original idea was a sequel to Django Unchained called "Django in White Hell" but he changed his mind during the writing

My favorite Tarantino film! It always gives me Reservoir Dogs vibes with the whodunnit, everyone in a single room, and the mutual destruction end. Cant wait to see how you guys land on it

My favorite of his films, 8th movie too. Also unknownth attempt for Logan Lucky, which hasn't been reviewed yet. BTW, RIP that legendary guitar, thing was worth a ton, reaction from her was genuine.

I do think that you guys are one of the best reactors because you notice the little details in a movies. Clues sprinkled throughout a movie. That is what this type of movie excels at. Trying to figure it all out. Dialogue was great as expected. Mary character was nominated for Academy Award for Jennifer Jason Leigh. It’s not one of his most popular movies but I liked it.
