What I love most about Harrison Ford is his uncanny ability to look vulnerable while still being strong. "GET OFF MY PLANE!" Fun Fact: Gary Oldman's performance earned him the nickname "Scary Gary" during production. However, he did not stay in character between the scenes. Wolfgang Petersen called the filming experience "Air Force Fun" because of how comedic and genial Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford would be off-screen. He also said that Gary Oldman would suddenly return to the menacing film persona instantly. Harrison Ford has since named Gary Oldman as his favorite on-screen nemesis. Also, Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman are actually hitting each other during their fight scenes.

Look at 28:24. Pause it. Oldman's characters nearly has tears in his eyes . That's what a great actor he is. He didn't play the guy as a one dimensional monster. He's a villain who's convinced he's the good guy, doing whatever it takes for his country. He doesn't want to kill the girl, and is moved by Ford prioritizing his family over his job. He can't say it, but he can show it in his eyes.

This was a movie I missed when it came out but I did know its most quotable line, "Get off my plane". Another great action movie from the 90s. And you're right Harrison doesn't portray your typical highly trained, super strong heroes. He's more of your "everyman" hero...so the punches he gives have a lot of heart and emotion and as much force behind them as a regular guy would have. He's kind of like Bruce Willis, not the standard 80s/90s hero build, but they're relatable and you like them so you root for them when they strike a blow to the villain. This is a great cast. William H. Macy, Gary Oldman and Dean Stockwell (Quantum Leap) and many other supporting cast that I recognize from other things I've seen. But I have to say I LUV Glenn Close!! She's well known for Fatal Attraction, but I first saw her in "Dangerous Liaisons" with Michelle Pfeiffer and John Malkovich and a few other now famous people you'd recognize. If you've ever seen Cruel Intentions...it's the same premise, except with a much more mature/dramatic approach to the storytelling. I'd highly recommend it. I'd also check out: "Hamlet"....we know how it ends but the modern telling is SO good "The Wife"...I think EVERY woman should see this film I don't know if Harrion's ever played a villain...it's not the vibe he gives off and so probably doesn't get asked to do them, unfortunately. If you're looking for more HF films, I'd check out: "Frantic"...an underrated kind of thriller/drama "Witness"...a well known drama/suspense "Regarding Henry"....an lesser known, quieter drama If you're looking for more HF action, you can always check out "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger"....the rest of the Jack Ryan movies that began with Alec Baldwin began in The Hunt for Red October.

He wanted General Raddick to take over and start a new Cold War so he could go back to his old job. @DocuzanQuitomos Ай бұрын
@@miller-joel Indeed, a traitor all the way; but what patrick posted answers a question the reactors had all the film: "Gibbs is going to do something to support the hijackers?" The answer is clearly: no, for the reasons in patrick's answer: Gibbs' motivations are mostly personal ambition, not any sense of loyalty to Raddick's cause. He didn't participate in this for his idea that an all antiamerican Kazakhstan is the way of the future for the region (thus, he is not going to become a martir and out himself killing the president in front of witnesses). A side note: we could argue that, even in their despicable actions, Gary Oldman's group had a bit more "honor" in their objectives than Gibbs (after all, they where really in it because they believed in that cause). "I can't believe a person in that position would betray everything just for a job..." It's not unheard of (not to that scale), but during Cold War some members of the intelligence in the United States did sell state secrets to the USSR and defected under the promise of "more prestigious positions" in shaping a world not fully dominated by the United States (of course, in many of those cases some pre existing political beliefs that USSR was the best leader of the world played a role in those incidents). And that's just speaking of the Cold War era, we can trace betrayals all over history for jobs... or even less (like the case of Benedict Arnold, that tried to surrender West Point during the Independence War of the United States, and had to eventually defect to Great Britain, because he ambitioned to be recognized as a great soldier and strategist... and, eventually, never got what he ambitioned, on either side). Nontheless in political fiction, there's always been the fear that the worst enemy of any security system is personal ambition; the moment you may piss a person in a sensible position, whose ego is bigger than its sense of duty/patriotism... that's a potential recipie for disaster.

This was the first movie I watched with my first Dolby Digital set-up. I had a surround speaker near a back door, and I kept pausing the disc to check if someone was outside every time I heard things coming from that speaker. Great movie. Wolfgang Peterson also directed In the Line of Fire and A Perfect Storm, both of which I enjoy!

One of my favorite films from the summer of 1997. Much like Independence Day (1996), we were given a U.S. president that spoke truth with heart and as an former soldier, no holding back in kicking some serious a**. Gary Oldman in the 1990s was one of the greatest actors to play villains and as fanatic Egor Korshunov, perfect. Glenn Close as the first-lady vice president (a first on film, pre-Kamala Harris) felt really believable in how she handled the situation. The two main separate-sets, AFO (airborne) and Situation Room (on the ground) are directed very well. The camerawork matches and moves along every space perfectly just as they are IRL. I like the action sequences between the aerial battles and the confrontations on AFO, especially with Ford doing most of it and just being the rugged actor he is. Lastly, Harrison Ford as P.OT.U.S. is considered to be one of many beloved presidential portrayals (why not?). It's because Ford can pull off real performances in action/suspense films and nothing wrong with that. Hopefully you'll check out other classics by The late Wolfgang Petersen:Shattered (1991), In The Line of Fire (1993) with Clint Eastwood, The Perfect Storm (2000) with Wahlberg & Clooney and the remake of The Poseidon Adventure aka Poseidon (2006).

Harrison Ford does play a villain in some movies. The thing is, he's usually someone people won't think is a villain, so that's how he's used in those movies. That's why I can't really tell you what movies they are without ruining the movies.

The Ramstein sequence was filmed at Rickenbacker Airport in Ohio with a REAL PLANE. Also, at some point two F-18s showed up and incredulously reported "It's Air Force One with bullet holes in it!" The air controller knew about the filming and set them straight. The 'bullet holes' were decals.

When the fifth highest grossing film of its year with two Academy Award nominations headlining a star at the peak of his career is called...underrated by at least four people in the comments section almost thirty years later. Not every film that doesn't get Best Picture is underrated guys. Plenty of films are just really good and well-remembered. Air Force One doesn't fly under the radar. Brick, Thoroughbreds, Green Room, Good Bye Lenin, etc. those are underrated. Those are independent films headlining stars new to the scene or just before or after their peak (or before they died). Air Force One is decidedly not underrated.

i do find it interesting how it seemed like we never got a clear backstory or any sort of overarching insight into Agent Gibbs' motives for the betrayal since it just came out of left field. I didnt even find out what his motives were until I researched the film and found out that there was actually a longer backstory for him which was ultimately removed from the script. Agent Gibbs was a former CIA operative who's career basically got derailed after the Cold War and so he teamed up with the terrorists to get revenge on the US govt. He knew them from his CIA days. I think the director said that his backstory scene would have been too long to film so they cut it from the script.
