"GET OFF MY PLANE!" Fun Fact: Gary Oldman's performance earned him the nickname "Scary Gary" during production. However, he did not stay in character between the scenes. Wolfgang Petersen called the filming experience "Air Force Fun" because of how comedic and genial Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford would be off-screen. He also said that Gary Oldman would suddenly return to the menacing film persona instantly. Harrison Ford has since named Gary Oldman as his favorite on-screen nemesis. Also, Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman are actually hitting each other during their fight scenes.

The ability to completely "turn on and off" the villain like that is quite impressive. I was once the villain in a production, and I was disappointed that some of the other actors whose company I enjoyed didn't socialize with me much. It was only later that I realized that, even though I _did_ "turn off" my villain character when appropriate, I retained some of his stand-offish glower-iness, which kept the "hero actors" at a distance.

@@bigdream_dreambigNot exactly the same thing since it wasn’t acting related, but it does remind me of the time I was working in catering and one of the girls halfway through the event finally gained the courage to ask what my problem was. Totally confused I asked what she meant. Turned out everyone thought I was glaring at them menacingly. I had to explain that I was wearing contacts and needed a new prescription, I wasn’t glaring, I was squinting in an attempt to see 😭 We had a laugh about it after that and all was well. I made sure to apologize and explain to the rest of the crew in case any others thought I was glaring at them as well. Suddenly everyone was so much more social with me after that 😂

@@Trenchcoat3 It's amazing (and sad) what misunderstandings happen between people every day. I once was at my first day of a new job, and I gave some of my completed paperwork to the receptionist -- but she didn't understand what I expected her to do with it. I apologized and took it back, but she came away with the impression that I was arrogant, acting "above my station" and assuming that everyone was there to do my bidding. You see, at every small-company job I'd worked at previously, the receptionist had doubled as a secretary for the CEO, so without even realizing it I had (incorrectly) assumed the same was true here. I later learned that _this_ CEO was such a control freak that he never delegated anything to her; she was only tasked with being a receptionist. Eventually, after she'd realized that I was actually one of the least arrogant, most "status-blind" employees there, she told me about how wrong her first impression of me had been. Although I was glad her impression had been corrected, I was VERY unsettled by how off it had been in the first place.

30:20 Not only is it possible, a stuntman actually did it for real while filming the Sly Stallone movie Cliffhanger, which absolutely should be on your list to react to. The Defense Secretary saying "I'm in charge here" and repeatedly trying to control the situation is a reference to Alexander Haig, who was Secretary of State to President Reagan and infamously said the same quote while trying to assert control of the government while Reagan was in the hospital after being shot. Also, the President having a military background and a teenage daughter is probably inspired by Bush Sr. and Clinton, respectively.

@@WhiskyCanuck From googling "how much did the stuntman in cliffhanger get": "Stuntman Simon Crane was paid $1 million to cross once between two planes at fifteen thousand feet, without the aid of any safety devices or trick photography." Sylvester Stallone paid the fee out of his own salary for the movie. Further research says the cost of the stunt (a world record for the most expensive aerial stunt) was one million dollars so it seems we're both right. So, IIRC, the Vice President does basically 3 things: 1. Provides an instant succession to the office of POTUS if the President is incapacitated or dies while in office. 2. Presides over the Senate in the same way the Speaker of the House does for the House of Representatives. 3. Casts the deciding vote in Senate votes in the event of an even 50/50 split. I’m sure there are other powers and responsibilities the VP has, but the original function was to always have a person leading the Executive Branch of the government in the event the President is unable to perform his duties. Originally, this meant in the event the President died or was removed from office. Later, the 25th Amendment to the Constitution added a proviso whereby the power of the Presidency could be taken from the President or given by the President if the President was incapacitated. The movie uses the example of the President having a stroke, but a more common example would be when George W. Bush was going to have surgery and be under anaesthesia and therefore be unable to perform the duties of the President, so he invoked the 25th amendment and signed his duties and powers to his VP, Dick Cheney, until Bush was out of surgery and off anaesthesia.

The Vice Presidency is the spare tire of the American government. Originally, the position was given to the loser of the presidential election -- it made sense to the people who wrote the Constitution that the guy who came in second should succeed the guy who came in first. Later, people realized it didn't, so they amended the Constitution to make the VP someone chosen by the President..

Perfect explanation! Officially, they preside over the Senate and are a backup. Unofficially: Politically, they balance the party's ticket. Obama for Example was seen as too young and inexperienced, So Biden was his VP pick as he would have someone who was more involved in Washington Politics. JFK was seen as a wealthy northerner elite, so LBJ was given the VP slot as a Texan. Further "Unofficially" it was given as either a consolation prize or a way to limit someone's political power. Theodore Roosevelt was a great example as he was picked to be McKinley's running mate to get him out of NY's Governor's office. When McKinley was assassinated, Senator Mike Hanna was quoted as being upset that "a damned cowboy" was going to be President

You are correct as to points 1 & 3. As to #2, the role of presiding is much less than the Speaker of the House. The first VP John Adams spoke too often, so the Senate rules were changed so the VP can’t make speeches in the Senate.

@@MoMoMyPup10 The incident happened on 1953: the presidential airplane (then a Lockheed Constellation "Columbine II") got a call sign like any other plane gets one: the name of the airline plus a random number (Air Force 8610). But along the route, it crossed paths with Eastern Air Lines 8610; regularly, to save time, ATC sometimes just mentions the number of the flight they want to talk to (because, regularly, there are no matching numbers in the same airspace); but, in this case, just saying "Flight 8610, descend and mantain altitude" didn't make clear to which plane ATC was talking to (and you don't want that kind of confusion, specially involving the presidential transport). The nickname/call sign Air Force One later became an informal element, until it became, in 1962, the official call sign for any aircraft transporting the President of the United States (that's another interesting thing: the call sign goes with the President, not with the plane).

The VP basically has two purposes: - Tie breaker vote in the Senate and preside over any impeachment - Next in line when the President is killed or incapacitated. There are other roles, and in modern America it's not uncommon for the President to assign extra duties to the VP - like "border czar" or "go negotiate this deal for us" but those are the big ones. In the movie - don't know how real this is - the Secretary of Defense was claiming that in a "time of war" if the President is out of touch, he gets to make the call. But, if the President is dead, compromised, or incapacitated - the VP is in charge. This actually happens on occasion when the President goes in for a surgery or some procedure where they are put under general anesthesia. The duties of the President are taken over by the VP until the President is functional again.
@WhiskyCanuck

Technicality: if the president is dead, the VP isn't in charge per se, the VP becomes the new president & the president is in charge. @@WhiskyCanuck Yeah, you are correct. When a President is permanent disabled or killed - technically speaking the VP doesn't serve as President, they become President and a new VP is approved. This is how Gerald Ford became President..both Nixon and his VP resigned before the VP role could be filled...so he became President since he was Speaker of the House But any time the President is incapacitated for any length of time, the VP serves as President until they become viable again or are elevated to the Presidency permanently. This is necessary because in the case of an nuclear attack, we only have minutes to respond - so even if the President was available for even an hour, it could be disastrous.

@fenix6297

@@MoMoMyPup10 My own statements don't contradict the movie. The movie is very obviously Hollywood but it is pretty close to accurate regarding the Constitution. The US Presidency doesn't really allow the President to be unavailable for any amount of time. Which is why when they KNOW the President is going to be incapacitated (like for a surgery) - they transfer the power to the VP for that time under Clause 3 of the 25th Amendment. They submit in writing that they will be unable to discharge the duties and transfer power to the VP until they submit another written statement taking them back. When the incapacitation is unplanned (like in the movie), they have to get the VP and the Cabinet - to agree the President is incapacitated under clause 4 of the 25th Amendment. That can actually take some shuffling to do. When Reagan was shot in 1981, Bush was in Texas and the details of Reagan's condition was largely unknown - so it was difficult to get Bush and the rest of the Cabinet to all agree on incapacitation. When Bush arrived back in Washington - Reagan was already out of surgery so he never invoked Clause 4. There were some worries about enemy movements and IF necessary, they could have immediately transferred power to Bush to make a response. But, under the circumstances - they opted not too. So "officially" the President was out of contact for several hours because they never actually transferred power under clause 4, and Reagan was never able to transfer it himself under clause 3. But, under the Constitution and our security status, that is never supposed to happen.

Joey points to the picture of Harrison Ford on the wall and mentions him in Air Force 1, but the owner says that the film was offensive to his people. (Joey: Dry cleaners? Owner: RUSSIANS!). Wolfgang Petersen told a story about how they were given a tour of the real Air Force One while preparing this movie and they pretty much saw everything except this one locked off section in the bowels of the plane were they weren’t allowed to go. The Secret Service just said that bit was classified or whatever and Petersen and the writers decided there was no reason that an escape pod might not have been in there so that’s what they went with. No idea what the reality is though. Another thing I remember is that Harrison told Gary to really hit him in that one close up. Oldman did and you can see it really fucking hurt. They had to not shoot Harrison Ford’s face for a few days after that. There’s a fair amount of tricky camera work to make Harrison Ford seem less imposing than Gary Oldman - I think Harrison is about five inches taller, isn’t he? Kinda keen.

@@mikshin9825 Yeah, "complex" might have been the wrong word to use here...I meant, that modern movies are trying to say too many things that go beyond the movie itself. And as i said, i don't want every movie to be "dumb", but i haven't seen any in recent years. Godzilla was awesome, but there was quite a lot of themes and messages in it. For a midair transfer scene in "Airport '75" stuntman Joe Canutt was really dangled from a helicopter to a few meters in front of a flying 747. It would have been extremely difficult to get him close enough to make actual contact with the plane without slamming him into it like a bug on a windshield, but I suppose, theoretically, it could be done. Stuntman Simon Crane did actually zipline down a weighted rope from one plane to another in midair in "Cliffhanger" (1993), but rope was dangled down to and pulled into the door of the other plane first so Crane could use it to zip down rather than risking him slamming into the plane while trying to get the rope and himself into the door at the same time. Come to think of it, redoing the scene in "Air Force 1" by having the lower the line to (without the pararescueman) to Air Force 1 and having Harrison Ford or William H. Macy grab it and attach it to the door, then having the pararescueman zipline down would have been a better and more plausible way to do the scene.

Couldn't they have just ziplined some parachutes?
@waterbeauty85

@@craigwheller That's a good question. The actual filmmaker's answer is surely that that just wouldn't be as exciting. "In story" reason: the rescue plane was a strike team that was on its way home from a completely different mission in Turkey when it was diverted midflight to go help Air Force 1, so it wasn't carrying any parachutes on board that it could send over to Air Force 1.

One of my favorite films from the summer of 1997. Much like Independence Day (1996), we were given a U.S. president that spoke truth with heart and as an former soldier, no holding back in kicking some serious a**. Gary Oldman in the 1990s was one of the greatest actors to play villains and as fanatic Egor Korshunov, perfect. Glenn Close as the first-lady vice president (a first on film, pre-Kamala Harris) felt really believable in how she handled the situation. The two main separate-sets, AFO (airborne) and Situation Room (on the ground) are directed very well. The camerawork matches and moves along every space perfectly just as they are IRL. I like the action sequences between the aerial battles and the confrontations on AFO, especially with Ford doing most of it and just being the rugged actor he is. Lastly, Harrison Ford as P.OT.U.S. is considered to be one of many beloved presidential portrayals (why not?). It's because Ford can pull off real performances in action/suspense films and nothing wrong with that. Hopefully you'll check out other classics by The late Wolfgang Petersen:Shattered (1991), In The Line of Fire (1993) with Clint Eastwood, The Perfect Storm (2000) with Wahlberg & Clooney and Troy (2004) which is amazing.
