Same! Even as a kid growing up far away from the US but in a small town, the whole suburb satire landed and was hilarious. Nosy, meddling neighbours vs the oddball (or just new neighbours) is a global experience. Funny, though: As a child, I wanted to be a part of the adventure, spying and climbing all over the place to catch the potentially bad guys. As an adult, I'd rather ask the teens if I could join the sideline if I chipped in for the pizza 😁

In my opinion, Joe Dante is a true author. You can immediately recognize his huge personality as a filmaker by whatching any of his works. He's always had a great love for horror and sci-fi B movies of the 50's (the legendary Roger Corman was his mentor). All his filmography is full of references to those films and he's always paying tribute and homage to them. I truly recomend you any other of his gems: Piranha, The Howling, Innerspace, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Explorers, Matinee... (you've already watched "Gremlins"). By the way: you didn't say much about the amazing soundtrack by legendary Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the music for all Dante's movies since Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) untill his death.

Yay! One of my favorite Tom Hanks films, and NOBODY is reacting to it, until now. Walter was played by Gale Gordon, Lucille Ball's second husband and longtime co-star - did you see Lucy's photo on the table in Walter's house? So many little tidbits like that - good to have this in your personal library. Rick Ducommun was a Canadian actor/comedian you might remember as a barfly in Groundhog Day. Great reaction!

Lucy and Gale Gordon were never married, but they worked together continuously from the 1940s (on radio) all the way into the 1980s. His face was recognizable to anyone who owned a TV during that time, lol. I never knew Rick Ducommun was Canadian, he always used to visit the morning radio show that I listened to in Los Angeles in the late 80s/early 90s.

In California v. Greenwood, the Supreme Court ended up ruling in favor of investigators and held that “the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit the warrantless search and seizure of garbage left for collection outside the curtilage of a home.” The case involved the protections extended by the 4th Amendment and the limits of the exclusionary rule. Here’s why that’s important. The state of California argued that the trash at the curb is outside the “curtilage,” or area of reasonable control, of the homeowner. It is not within the protection of the 4th Amendment, for any passerby could have access to it.

The "doctor" was Henry Gibson: if you saw "The Blues Brothers", he played one of the Neo Nazis. I'm very happy that you mention Bruce Dern, one of my lifelong favorite actors. He's done everything - starring roles, bit parts, drama, comedy, and he nails it every time. A VERY underrated actor, whose films you should check out. I won't suggest any - there's too many to choose from, but I first saw him in either "Silent Running", "Support Your Local Sheriff", or "The Wild Angels", when I was a kid. He's actually been in 3 Tarantino films, playing small parts: "Hateful Eight", "Django Unchained", and "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", and is still very busy.

I wouldn't say Dern's underrated because he's earned two Oscar nominations for "Coming Home" (Best Supporting Actor) and "Nebraska" (Best Lead Actor). I like him too in stuff like "Smile", "The Driver", "Last Man Standing", "The Astronaut Farmer", "Black Sunday", and "The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant". Even bit parts like "Marnie" and "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte". Speaking of "Nebraska", Rance Howard (father of Ron Howard, who produced this film), who plays one of the detectives here, played one of Dern's brothers in that film.

OMFG I just noticed and then realized something! @ 12:55 when they’re in Walter’s house, you can see some framed photos in the shot. One is of Walter but another is Lucille Ball! That’s when I realized that Walter is played by Gale Gordon who had some guest starring roles on I Love Lucy and then later costarred with her on The Lucy Show AND Here’s Lucy!! So her picture there was just a fun reference placed by the set decorators!!

Rick Ducomman (Art) IMO is hilarious, he usually is a bit player, has been on lots of TV and some big movies like Hunt for Red October, Scary Movie, Last Action Hero, Groundhog Day, The Last Boy Scout, Encino Man. I remember him from a Canadian kids show called Zig-Zag (1980-88) with Terry David Mulligan.

Most kids watched Goonies, Ninja Turtles, Iron Giant or Home Alone. I did too but I LOVED THIS movie as a child. It just felt more mature to me given the feel of it but the comedy was on point with such relatively dark subject matter. A lot of eerie elements perfect for the spooky season as a wholesome, family type film. If you wanna see a crazy kids movie from the 80's watch the animated film The Secret Of NIMH from 1982. That movie will scare you even as an adult. Rated G for Geesus Christ.

Interestingly - to me, anyway, and in the light of recent events - this movie was made during a writer's strike. The director Joe Dante gave the screenwriter a nominal job on the crew so he could be around to address things, under the table. Everything takes place on that one street which was located on the Universal backlot - before they redressed the houses for this movie the street was a stop on the tour and featured the Cleaver house from "Leave it to Beaver" and I think the Munsters' house was where the Klopeks lived and a few other iconic TV houses. Nothing else was being shot on the lot at the time due to the strike. Because the story is very contained, they shot in sequence to an unusual degree and were able to improv and play around with character and story stuff as they went. A story Dante tells about shooting is that the studio tour buses that drove by every hour had priority over filming activity - the theme park made a lot more money for the studio than any one movie ever did, apparently. So the crew had to take a coffee break every time a bus trundled by with the tour guide burbling tour stuff over the loudspeaker. He said there are a couple places where the tour guide's voice can faintly be heard in the final movie and he left it in for giggles. The other thing I recall hearing is that Tom Hanks and Rick Ducommun did not exactly become best buddies. There was no nasty confrontation but apparently Rick rubbed Tom the wrong way, realized it, and deliberately needled Tom whenever he could. Tom was probably aware of it and channeled all that into his performance - some of the looks he gives Rick are rather venomous. I assume Tom was aware, he's a smart guy. I think I remember hearing that another thing that was supposed to be underlying the whole movie was that Tom Hanks' character got fired just before the movie began, so he's lying to his wife about being on vacation the whole time. His character being kind of vague and flaky and unhinged makes more sense with that in mind but when they put the movie together Tom being unemployed sort of brought the ending down so they took it all out. One other thing - the actor playing Walter was named Gale Gordon. He was not entirely well by this time but he did his part just fine. He was previously known for co-starring with Lucille Ball on her '70s sitcom. When they break into Walter's house you can see framed photos of Gale and Lucy in the living room if you look sharp. Very much a Joe Dante kind of gag. 😄 A lot of people haven't heard of this, for whatever reason it fell off the map on original release and nobody saw it at all. Dante wrote it off as a misstep until like ten years later. Now it's the movie he most commonly gets asked about when he's recognized, second only to "Gremlins," which kind of confused him since it vanished without a trace when it was new but apparently kids discovered it on home video and on cable.
