Fun facts: Everything Carole predicted happened in the film. (Falling off roof, setting himself on fire...) This was filmed entirely on the Universal Backlot on the residential street where Desperate Housewives would later be filmed. Ricky's house is the original Munster house from the 1960's TV series. It had to have vegetation set decoration in front and only be shot from certain angles to make sure audiences did not recognize it. Gale Gordon (Walter) is perhaps best known for his role as Lucy's foil in the Lucy Show (1962-68). A photo of Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon (taken during the production of that sitcom) is one of the photos on top of Walter's TV.

10:46 That's one of the dynamics I love about this movie. These three grown men are basically playing a kids' game of "Detective" and "Army" like little boys, whereas Ray's young son behaves like a level-headed adult and older teen Ricky (whose parents are out of town) spends the whole week doing household chores (painting his house). The kids and wives are all bemused by the immaturity of the neighborhood husbands. It's hilarious and the comedy reminds me a bit of The Three Stooges. I remember watching this when I was around 12 and thinking: "Man, this reminds me of fun times as a kid when we'd get together and play GI Joe in our backyards." "Red Rover, Red Rover...let Ray go over!" Haha. Rumsfeld was my favorite character in the film.
@jillanderson324210 ай бұрын
The movie was filmed during the 1988 Writer's strike, and because of that, the director, Joe Dante encouraged the cast to improvise and ad-lib. One scene that was improvised is when Tom Hanks picks up the gurney and puts himself in the ambulance.

I absolutely live this movie... and it was where I first heard of sardines. Growing up, my family hated seafood of all kinds, so I never really go to eat any. After watching this movie, I begged my mom for some sardines, and she got me a can because she's an awesome mom. Now, I love seafood of all kinds, but I have a very special place in my heart for sardines, and this movie.

One of my favorites from the first time seeing it on HBO. Oddly, the pro critics didn't like it much - I would never invite them to any of my parties (surprise, surprise). I had this in my personal library on VHS tape, now on DVD. Bruce Dern plays the consummate Vietnam vet. Gale Gordon (Walter) was Lucille Ball's second husband, and longtime co-star (did you notice the photos of Lucy on Walter's TV?). It's nice to see a youngster like Corey Feldman take such interest and civic pride in his neighborhood.
@davidlionheart2438 Жыл бұрын
Gale Gordon was Lucille Ball's costar, but not her second husband. That was Gary Morton.

"He can't come out until he resembles the man that I married." "Carol, We don't have that kind of time." Fun Fact: Robert Picardo and Dick Miller both appeared in Matinee (1993), also directed by Joe Dante. Final Bow Fact: Final appearance of Gale Gordon in a motion picture. He would however make a couple credited television appearances in 1991 before passing away in 1995 at age 89. Location Location Fact: The street was shot on the Universal back lot. It has been used for many films and television shows, including Desperate Housewives (2004). Some of the buildings have changed over time, but Walter's (Gale Gordon) house is the only building on the lot that hasn't changed at all. Dog Wangler Fact: Walter's (Gale Gordon) toy poodle Queenie was played by the same dog that played Precious in The Silence Of The Lambs (1991). Michael Jackson's famed chimpanzee, Bubbles, was a frequent guest on the set. He was brought to set, and taken care of, by the animal wrangler that brought and handled the dogs on the set. What Script Facts: The film was shot in sequence and was filmed during the writer's strike of 1988. Although Dana Olsen, the writer, appeared in the film, he was prohibited from contributing anything to the script while on set. For this reason, Joe Dante encouraged the actors to improvise many scenes. One example was the moment when Rumsfield rips the Klopeks' wallpaper, an idea from Bruce Dern. Rick Ducommun ad-libbed many of his lines, including the "Satan is good, Satan is our pal" dialogue. Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher came up with the idea of playing along with Jeopardy! (1984) at home. Tom Hanks improvised the scene where he picks up the gurney and puts himself into the ambulance.

This movie fucking rules and is right up my alley. I love how it's shot like an old horror movie. It's like a Dracula plot was suddenly dropped in modern day suburbia. Carrie Fisher's character is so funny to me as this saintly wife who thinks her husband has snapped, and there's so many little bits that never fail to crack me up, like when Ray keeps screaming after Art finished when they think the bone is Walter's.

'80s Joe Dante movies rawk! They just don't make movies with that sort of style anymore. 'Innerspace' is another good one. It's equal parts action-adventure and sci-fi/comedy, and it draws a lot of inspirado from Fantastic Voyage. 2:48 It always irritates me when people refer to a grill as a "barbecue." Two different methods of cooking, one fast, one slow. Barbecue is meant to be done slowly, sometimes taking half a day. Grilling is faster, but the end result tends to be less delectable. 4:34 "666" symbolically represents the Roman empire in an abstract/ideological sort of way.
