It was indeed based on a true story. There was no cheating coach or douchebag bobsledders but in 88 the first Jamaican Olympics bobsled team showed up. Everyone, myself included, was thinking wtf is Jamaica doing in the winter Olympics. The runs were accurate. They had a hard time getting in the sled and everyone was worried that they had no idea what they were doing. The second run was like lightning and they ended up in medal contention. Everyone tuned in for their third run and when they crashed it broke the hearts of everyone around the world. But the whole world tuned in 4 years later to see how they would do.

It was definitely one of the big stories of that Olympics. As you say, it was must-see TV at the time. I was in the U.S. and everyone was talking about it and cheering them on. Great fun and they really ended up becoming a very competitive team thanks to Jamaica's deep well of great sprinters.

"A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it." -Irv Blitzer, portrayed by John Candy in "Cool Runnings. The crash didn't happen for the reasons shown in the film, but it did happen. They used real footage of it in the film. One of team members later said he "felt a bump" when they tipped, but did not realize they had turned over until he started to smell his helmet (which was fiberglass) friction-burning on the ice, "which is something that stays with you for many years afterward."

Always reminds me of flying into the Buffalo airport, as we were coming home from our honeymoon, many many moons ago. We had been in Hawaii for a few weeks and i boarded the plane in shorts, sandals and and aloha shirt, but since it was February I put shoes, jeans and a winter coat into my carry on bag. But I was forced to check my carry on, and then the airline lost my suitcase and carry on bag. Our flight was the last one allowed to land before the airport was shut down as there was a blizzard, so I got off the flight dressed for a beach in Hawaii, not a snowbound airport in Buffalo NY, and didn’t even have anything else available. 🥶

I worked for the Olympics and also on the movie. The movie is highly fictionalized. Nobody was against them certainly not the other bobsled teams who offered help and support. Everybody loves them and did whatever they could to help them, but the movie felt that necessary to make bad guys that did not exist. Which is unfortunate.

@ddiamondr1 it's Hollywood. It would be pretty boring if everybody got along. It's like the Notre dame head coach in Rudy who didn't want him on the team. That didn't happen in real life either but you need an antagonist.

@@anthonyanderson9303 I’ve worked for Hollywood studios. As a writer, I realize that story requires drama and conflict but their real story had enough obstacles for story and turning the other sled teams and the entire Olympic organization, all who embraced them and did what they could to help, into a-holes was cheap and lazy writing.

This is a Wonderful movie, superb cast Leon (Derice), Sanka (Doug E Doug) and John Candy especially. It also stretches the idea of “based on a true story” about as far as possible. 1. Irv Blitzer and… well ALL of the cast, are fictional characters. They are based on real people though (Blitzer being based on 2 different Americans living in Jamaica). One thing the movie does get completely correct, is its premise, the idea of getting Olympic level sprinters to push the sleds. The irony is that, in the subsequent 10 Winter Olympics since Calgary, Jamaica 🇯🇲 has not yet Medaled in any Bobsledding events… they do currently hold the world records for the fastest push-start times for the men’s 2 person and 4 person events, as well as the women’s 2 person, lol sounds like the idea they had back in ‘88 was at least a sound one. 😄

The bridge that you see the team running across spanned the Elbow River. It was a Calgary landmark, but sadly destroyed during the 2013 floods. The Relax Inn and the Ranchman's were both legit businesses at the time of filming and just a few blocks away from each other. The Ranchman's did indeed feature country line dancing. Neither of them remain in business. The "revolving restaurant" (that didn't actually revolve during this film) is the very high-end restaurant atop the Calgary Tower. It does indeed revolve, at a rate of about 55 minutes per revolution.

Yep yep yep. Ofc, they have to train out of the country in the winter time, but it might surprise you to realize that most of bobsled training is OUT of the sled. With the limited number of tracks in the world (approximately 14) and of course the summer temperatures, it becomes impossible to practice bobsledding year-round. They are only able to actually practice on the ice from October through the end of March. After that, the cost of keeping ice on a refrigerated track is just too inefficient. Ultimately, the bulk of their time - almost all of the off season and two or three days a week during the on season - is spent in the weight room, where developing power and strength for accelerating the bobsled is of the utmost importance. Off-season workouts are split between time on the running track and time in the weight room. To break it down even further, their lifting workouts are probably 80% lower body work; you don't want a massive chest and arms because you need to hunker down in the sled, and large shoulders will just be a windsail slowing down the sled. They need to be strong, but still lean. Overall, bobsledder training is a combination of an Olympic weight lifter’s and an Olympic sprinter’s. They need the strength to be able to move the 500 lb sled and still have the speed to be able to keep up as it gets moving down the icy hill before they jump in. Interestingly, a lot of bobsled first-timers fail out of the program because they cannot handle the G-forces generated by the sled's speed. And while I LOVE "Cool Runnings" no way in the world would Sanka be the brakeman unless he got WAY stronger. Using this particular lineup, Yul Brynner would have/should have been the brakeman, because he has the most weight to push and needs to be the strongest man on the team.

I love this movie. It’s such a fun uplifting movie. 29:56 and he wasn’t doing it to punish the Jamaican athletes. He was doing it to punish Irv and the athletes were just caught in the middle. I like how Irv told him to punish him and let the guys compete. I think the first misunderstanding on the time was that he hadn’t been part of Olympic bobsledding in years so he hadn’t kept up that it was so competitive that they had to change the qualifying. The minute flat was cause the judge hated Irv. 36:46 at this point everyone started seeing them as serious athletes. They could’ve just quit after the crash and let the emergency crew take care of their sled but they found a way to finish. Plus that one guy wasn’t trying to hurt them. He was trying to hurt Irv.

I'm so happy to see this reaction! This fish out of water team trying and working so hard was such an inspiration to me, and I went out and bought the soundtrack to keep those positive vibes❤✨️

"I SEE PRIDE! POWER! A BAD-ASS MUTHA WHO DON'T TAKE NO CRAP OFF OF NOBODY!" Every now and then, I will just randomly say this to myself. It makes me laugh, but I also use it as a little pick-me-up, too.

The real footage from the crash is brutal, how they didn't break their necks is unbelievable. This makes me cry everytime I watch it ❤

If you liked this one, youll love Eddie the Eagle. Its set at the same Olympics and theres even a mention of the Jamaican bobsled team in there. I think youd love it.
