I really like that they gave LT. Gorman a redemption arc. He starts off as an arrogant a-hole but once he realizes how far out of his league he is, he lets the people with real capability take control of the situation. When he and Vasquez get cornered in the vent, I was really moved by his willingness to die next to someone, bravely, by taking out as many aliens as they could.

You did not saw the version they saw. You saw the original theatrical cut. You had the privilege of enjoying the movie’s carefully crafted suspenseful first hour. The biggest difference between Ripley and modern Heroines, and why Ripley is such a damn good character is that she is entirely believable. She is still Feminine, they didn't write her to replicate how they think a male Action hero would act, she shows motherly instincts to Newt, and she kicks arse when she has to and not a second more, no unnecessary risks, she does absolutely what is necessary for her and Newt to survive. All of this gives her depth as a character and makes her a completely believable badass!
@1grantharper3 жыл бұрын
Sounds great, but falls apart once you realise that modern heroines are actually all that too. If anything Sigourney lacks a lot of the femininity of more typical heroines with her bone structure and height. Also has much more of a flat affect (compared to the hysterical Paxton for instance). I wouldn't be surprised if they created the Newt character to make Sigourney appear less masculine overall. Another thing that no one talks about is Ripley's lack of training, strength or skills and still managing to leave all the space marines/real men for dead. Sound familiar?
@Mat-zi4po3 жыл бұрын
@@1grantharper Some of those issues from Ripley are addressed in the film. She had training with the loader, which you seen her use early in the film that makes a comeback in the big final fight with the big queen in the end. Hicks had a short scene introducing her to the weapons and Ripley first looked awkward the first time using one (when the aliens broke in the lab from above), which can be expected from first time firing a weapon. As for leaving the men behind, she mentioned they were being cocooned like the colonists were (and Kane in the first movie). Her response of nuking the site from orbit may be a more humane solution then living as an alien host.

As far as know, the writers didn't know who was a man and who was woman when they first wrote Alien... so they made all characters believable. The director chose their gender after the script was done... so yeah, it'n not that writers could do a better job, it's just that they wrote a man. That is why I don't like CGI. It is so hard to see that this thing isn't real, unlike CGI that you can spot instantly. And I get it, it's cheaper, but it destroys the whole experience of it. When I see The Walking Dead and I see the zombies walk around, it looks perfect, but then they put some other zombies as CGI, and you can tell the difference and it just kills the whole immersion.
@weldonwin3 жыл бұрын
@@GaiaLegend It has rather become a cliche to simply say that practical effects are always better than CGI. Yes, there is some terrible CGI, but there can be pretty terrible practical effects too. CGI is simply a tool for effects teams to make use of and there are a lot of things that you simply cannot do with practical effects. I do agree that CGI has become over used, frequently as a shortcut, where the same effects can be achieved with practical, in camera effects and in many cases, would have looked better as in camera effects. It just happens that on Aliens, James Cameron had considerable experience with practical special effects himself (He'd previously worked with Exploitation Schlock-Meister Roger Corman where he learned to make impressive effects shots on the cheap) and was working with his long time collaborator, Effects God Stan Winston who previously worked with Cameron on The Terminator.

Ripley and Sara Conner were my fav movie leads, of both men and women. Both were normal women put in bad situations in their first movies, and became warriors in their second movies. And neither sacrificed their femininity. In both women’s case, they were spurred into taking extreme action because of their “mothers instincts” to protect their respective children. The past decade of movies have been so bad, i canceled cable years ago, and now I scour the bargain dvd bins for old classics to watch.

The problem is that compared to so many ones with male leads this has been one of only a few with women during that time. It's like how there was a push in Hollywood to have more movies about the Suffrage movement a few years back. They kept being said No because HBO did it with Iron Jawed Angels. When the sentry guns are out...the regular version cuts very important lines, roughly "There's nothing stopping them now." "Yeah, but they don't know that." This let's the audience know that the aliens are not just animals, but can think/strategize, which makes the ceiling scene all the more of an impact.
@jcp1984again2 жыл бұрын
I disagree completely. The sentry scenes are pointless in relation to the whole story. Without them the creatures remain more mysterious for a little longer. Believe it or not, the scene where Ripley learns her daughter's fate is one of the Special Edition inclusions. It was cut from the theatrical release, which I think is crazy. It makes her relationship with Newt that much more powerful. Also, the scenes with the automated guns shooting Aliens were a Special Edition add. They might seem superfluous, but without them the Aliens kind of disappear for a huge chunk of the middle of the movie. Good to have them test the defenses to keep the threat up. On the other hand, I don't think they needed to include the scenes on the colony, before the outbreak. They kind of slow the pace down, don't really add anything relevant to the story, and I think it's a lot more tense not seeing the colony until the Marines open the doors and move in.

Cameron was smart in not trying to just copy the first film,a mistake that all the other films made in one way or another. Sadly this film would be the high point for the franchise. After this it's all downhill in various ways. Even the ones by Scott,who you think would know better,are just laughable in their stupidity. Your comment about them being a family was spot on. In fact in the great commentary for the film by James Cameron he says that he set it up that way for the next film. He wanted to do a third one but for some reason they never got back to him so he made the Abyss instead,which was a far better film than Alien 3 turned out to be. Alien 3 was,in Cameron's own words,a kick in the balls to the fans of the second film. It's a franchise that should never have been a franchise. The extended version is the cut which Cameron himself considers to be the definitive version. It really is a nice improvement which some small but very effective character pieces--I particularly like the moment where Bishop looks at the (supposedly caseless 10mm) pistol which Vasquez hands to him with distaste and then quietly gives it back to Ripley while her back is turned.

@@FirebirdCamaro1220 What "mystery"?
@FirebirdCamaro12202 жыл бұрын
@@miller-joel mainly the audience (as well as the marines) having no idea what happened to the colonists until the first xenomorph attack over an hour into the movie. Also, having the xenomorphs on screen for less time makes them more frightening. Ridley Scott understood this with the first film
@miller-joel2 жыл бұрын
@@FirebirdCamaro1220 If you have no idea what happened to the colonists, how do you have enough brain power to breathe? They lose contact with the colony soon after Ripley's inquest. Gee, what a mystery. I wonder what happened. Seriously? Also, this was never going to be a repeat of Alien. Obviously, we were going to see a lot more of them. Cameron didn't linger on them, though. He used a lot of movement blur and other techniques to hide the fact they only had 6 guys in alien suits. The threat in this movie is the sheer number of them, and how heavily armed marines were overconfident and under-prepared. Not to mention Ripley's arc and her confrontation with the alien queen. If you wanted to see Alien again, go see Alien again. No one is going to stop you.

Still my favorite movie experience in my life. Everyone gasped at the end when Bishop flies in to get Ripley on the platform. Back then we didn’t have the action heavy movies we have today so it was new to us. The pacing, the action, the characters, the world, the vehicles, story and suspense are all top notch in this movie and it stills holds up IMO. Alien is a classic but I like Aliens more for all the reasons I mentioned before.

The cuts made to Aliens was all time saving. The loader was done by placing a stunt man inside the suit. The model sequences look so good because they were filmed live, the dropship was hung from thin lines and physically moved. The whole squad of actors playing marines were placed in a fake military boot camp for a few weeks to learn how to look genuine. The actor originally playing Hicks dropped out so MB stepped in at the last minute to play him. That's why Hicks kinda stands out from the others in a way as he didn't do the few weeks boot camp with the other cast. Apone (Al Mathews) was the real deal, a former Marine Sergeant, so what you see is about as real as it gets. A really bad shoot was this film, stress and tension, Cameron fell out with James Horner, the UK crew fell out with Cameron, the lighting director ignored (kind of) Cameron design for the atmosphere processor level where the marines meet the Aliens. The original theatrical version has a great editing mistake, where Ripley is getting armoured up in the dropship, they get the wrong sequence of weapons. She picks up the pulse rifle and puts down the flamethrower, then picks up the flame thrower and puts down the pulse rifle. Also, Cameron really hated that the Uak crew stopped for tea breaks lol.

The Abyss (the extended version) is a very good film... although I hate the ending. Cameron spends a couple hours creating a world rooted in realism with mysterious ‘underwater flying objects’ and then goes full on fairytale “and they lived happily ever after”... it doesn’t work. He should’ve kept everyone in the dark about the UFOs, have Ed Harris still diffuse the nuke and then send an obscure message right before he dies... and then end the movie with the crew doomed to suffocate... that would’ve made it a great film... leave the viewer wondering...

Fun fact: the pulse rifle is actually just a Thompson sub machine gun with cosmetic additions and the Rig mounted “smart guns” are MG-42 machine guns. The best sci fi weapons are always the ones that use existing weapons as a base. It gives it a more believable ascetic.

I work with a lot of machines and depending on what they're programmed to make, they can make a lot of different sounds. One day, a machine was doing a cutting cycle that sounded exactly like the motion detectors in this movie. It immediately snapped me out of whatever I was doing and that sound had my FULL attention for the few seconds it took me to recognize what was going on. If you watch this movie enough, that sound will get to you.

@GUNNER67akaKelt LOL! One of the machines in the factory where I work made a similar noise. It was only for a day, and I never figured out which machine was doing it. Also, one of the air handler units sounds like the giant ants from the movie THEM, when the bearings start to run out of oil :D It really makes you think about how they create some of these sound effects for movies.
