The most frustrating thing about Arcane Viktor is that we can see from concept art, they had wonderful designs for keeping him a MACHINE Herald. But because they thought that was an overused and boring character concept, they inadvertently just made something League already had plenty of.

People always used to make fun of old viktor for being a poorly motivated supervillain who wanted to turn everyone into robots (in some lore versions, since he did improve in later appearances and get clarified, love "the House on Emberflit Alley" like most Viktor mains) but they really leaned right back into that weaker side characterization for Arcane. And while he fits in a sense in Arcane (though I still think he's very poorly motivated to reach that state)... it's just a less distinct archetype in league. "Transhumanist cyborg augmentation junkie" isn't UNIQUE in pop culture, but it was unique in league, and even more so-as far as archetypes, it's a favorite for a lot of people. Every time that "From the moment I realized the weakness of my flesh... it disgusted me" Mechanicus opening monologue is used for a meme I mark out lol

I don't think Viktor is about transhumanism in Arcane, especially not about augmenting the human body. He is more about the dilemma of the utopia. Viktors motivation in arcane is basically to create heaven and bring people into an existence free of suffering. While a lot of the execution of the finale was poor, Viktors motivation was ultimately very interesting.

From an Arcane Perspective? It's fine, it's serviceable, it's fun for the story. For League? For the wider world of Runeterra as a whole? It's just ... We already have Malzahar. We already have a character that EASILY can be slotted into that place and filled out to fit that image. Instead with Viktor, they kind of ... Sanded-down the ideas to make him less of a complex character, and then didn't do much after that, when the idea that Arcane does for everyone else was to Build It Out, make them MORE morally complex and interesting and nuanced. It just feels like a waste of a decent idea, and I think that's why it hurts so much.

The real issue is the whole retconning. Arcane is a great story and I love it, but it's nowhere near the love most players, me included, have for the original lore the game grew up with. Old victor is a completely different character that barely shared themes with new victor, but fitted in the league lore. New victor is just the lore mesh of three league characters in one which feels boring and disrespectful to the original story, as goofy as old victor was. The whole retconning is a mess and I can only hope rammus isn't retconned for the sake of some director's creative vision..

I feel like the Arcane iteration still had at least a bit of a mechanical aspect. The gears on his chest that were left over from the harness he made in s01 did a lot of heavy lifting, but it was something at least. Early concepts also show him with more mechanical looking joints but that didnt make it into the show. Then they put him and league and replaced all that with just generic golden fantasy embroidery. I feel like that largely contributes to him feeling more like a mage than a machine herald in the game as opposed to the show where the transhumanist aspect was still retained even if it was combined with an arcane backround

For me, the issue is that they kept a few design aspects of Old VIktor, but they don't make any sense for Arcane Viktor. Why does he have a red cape? Why does he have the hair sticking out? Why does he have those strange shoulder pads? All of the reworks up till now kept these things and had a really interesting reason to keep them, and even made them vastly important to the character. Viktor kinda... doesn't have a reason to look like this. The only INTERESTING thing is his new mask/face. Nothing else really has a rhyme or reason.

I feel like the third arm could have been worked into the fight scene with Jayce, just showing a scene of Viktor walking into their old study, the arm thrown there, a sort of symbol of their time dreaming and working toghether, and he adds it to himself, maybe subconciously to complete himself, to try and recover that part of himself, maybe to hint at the end where Jayce is the only one that can get to him.

That's such a great idea! It feels so weird for him to have that arm, when like... he didn't really do anything with it in Arcane? It was just a demonstrator. The idea of him adding it later solely because it reminded him of Jayce feels way more natural then him having that arm born out of the cocoon for no apparent reason other then ''its the old silhouette o.f the character''.

The crazy thing is they could have saved his new design a bit, if they had implemented the mechanical arm early in the show to help him carry extra things whilst walking, as one of his arms is being taken up by his walking stick. If they had done something as simple as that early in the story, the third arm would make more sense now. But they didn't... and that was my problem with Victor in Arcane overall, his story has potential and ultimately he was important but they didn't have the time to make all of it make sense.

His motivations just felt off in season 2. Like, not his morals, his morals were solid throughout the entire show, but his motivations and drive felt weaker. I don’t even know how to articulate it but season 2 just felt chaotic and hectic and not as well thought out as season 1. I really wish they’d implemented the arm more in season 1, even in the background maybe, or letting us see Viktor use it to carve the delicate runes on the hex core metal rotating plates or SOMETHING.

He is not void corrupted though. Arcane is a different thing. If it was void it wouldn’t be so light themed (void hates light). Void is also not magic and actually doesn’t „corrupt” in lore, it just drives people insane.

Because of this I really feel like he was rushed. His lore still calls him biomechanical, so I am sure the idea is that he IS still part machine. But ingame the only thing that does end up mechanical looking is his arm. Granted I don't think old Viktor was great in that regard either, he looked more like a guy in armor, but that doesn't excuse new Viktor not looking like this.

Viktor's rework has me worried about my favorite characters showing up in future shows. I really don't like the idea that it only takes one fella with a big ego saying "This character is outdated and problematic" for a champion to be completely erased and replaced. Also, after watching the show and seeing what they did with Warwick, Viktor and Singed, I was thanking God that they completely forgot Camille exists because I'm 100% sure she wouldn't be the grandma pro status quo bitch that I love if she showed up.

Instead of actually rewritting stuff, they are going for the ''they are actually not that different'' path, dealing with canonicity like checking boxes instead of something to tell stories about those characters. Blitzcrank now was just made some random time where Viktor went down to Zaun in an unmentioned gas leak problem and came back. Renata is just another random goon who rose to power after Silco left. The Viktor rework encapsulates that very well: they want to remake it into Arcane because thats popular, but just like how Viktor's kit didn't change and his visual language SEEMS similar, they want to pretend other champions don't need many changes in PnZ. And just like how Viktor may seem similar but changed COMPLETELY, them just doing small changes to those characters stories imply *MANY* things that they don't want to control.

@First_love_late_spring Mainly because, on one side, it *is* over for us. We are not going back there, at least not for a LONG while, as new animated series and games are all going to be in new regions, telling new stories. Riot already is not going to publish new written short-stories, so the chance of us getting actual content on how this ''second era'' of PnZ works (like Sevika in the council, for example) is slim to none. The best we get (as we are seeing with Blitz and Renata) are diluted, toned down versions of their bios. On the other side, Season 2 was just very weak in stablishing this as an on-going conflict. Because of the *many* big narratives and plot points it was trying to juggle, the conflict between cities became just an afterthought, while it was much more present in S1 and felt like it was built up to explode in S2 after Jinx's attack. We *know* the conflict is not over, but it feels much more like it was done so the status quo that the region has on League stays in place instead of the actual objective of the story.

Arcane Viktor is also just the "Cripple turns themselves into a Monster why reaching for a cure - how dare they" Trope. Jayce even says in the final Episode that Viktor's sickness was not 'something to be fixed'. It's such ableist messaging, like how in X-Men 2 when Rogue is excited about a cure for the thing that makes her kill everyone she touches, Storm *(the one with wonderous god-like powers with no downside)* declares there's "nothing" wrong with Rogue. So tone-deaf and honestly just such a stupid thing for Jayce to say that it's totally out of character.

@@Zxykary That is not what it was like at all. The X-man thing was incredibly stupid. But with Arcane, we see Jayce on most occasions defend Viktor and his work. He only started going against him when he saw that there would be a snowball effect that, you know, ended the whole world. Him trying to convince Viktor to stop what he was doing was him trying to convince Viktor that flaws are human and that it was okay to have them sometimes. People are flawed, they get sick, its what happens. And its certainly a better alternative then the glorious evolution which would see the entirety of free will and individuality removed from everyone.

Yeah, tbh S2 to me feels a LOT like they didn't *really* plan for everything, and a lot of those things felt like tie-ins to the game instead of well-executed storytelling. Viktor was one, with his new design but also the mechanic hand. Mel was the other, where she was SO disconnected from everything and every scene she was in felt like a promotion for her when she becomes a champ in League. Never saw a character who screamed more ''I AM A SUPPORT'' then Mel

I feel like it would've been pretty easy to have him become the Machine Herald. Just write out Sky's death and have him continue using the hexcore to augment himself, also get rid of some of the void-like aspects of the arcane. Maybe after the timeskip he could've even already started augmenting himself with experimental hextech cybernetics, since people in Zaun were augmenting themselves with shimmer tech after the timeskip too. He and Jayce could get into a fight over the people of the undercity being dangerous, with Viktor being angry since he's from the undercity, leading to him leaving to go to Zaun to help people. He then becomes a reluctant messianic figure to the desperate people of Zaun and accidentally forms a cult (like in the original lore) after helping them with the hexcore and his superior hextech. A bit like how he does in the show, just not with him being partially controlled by some eldritch force and being more mage than cyborg. There, still feeling emotionally hurt after his fight with Jayce and after witnessing all the injustices from Piltover, infighting between Zaunites, hextech being used for violence, and the augmentations from the hexcore possibly affecting his brain and making him mentally more cold, robotic, and logical, he could come to the conclusion that human emotion is the problem and society would be better off if they were all emotionless and machine-like. Then he could begin using his hexcore to lobotomize members of his cult and lead them as a cyborg army to convert more people in Zaun and Piltover. That way there'd still be an epic final fight, Viktor would become the Machine Herald and not a god-like being, and other characters could be more easily led into becoming like their original League selves.

So, I've mentioned it on other videos, but they did a Skarner level rework where the old character is gone entirely but unlike Skarner, they didn't replace it with anything unique. They just made Malzahar Grey and gave him a staff. He used to float before they changed that too. Who is a character that peered into another world and had it's magic warp their physical appearance, who summons minions to do their bidding and can meld minds with other characters to root them in place? Malzahar.

It would have been such amazing storytelling if Viktor made that hextech arm act like a new right arm, because his true right arm was busy supporting his crutch. It shows that he doesn't consider a healthy human the perfect human yet, or even that form doesn't matter, just ability. If he wore this to the end of season 1, got exploded, and in the stasis he fused with the arm. He has no need for it anymore because he can walk again, but he also can't get it off. Then it just dangles, usually hidden by his robe, until Jayce shoots him straight in the face, the arm (now and only now controlled by Sky) deflects it, but it hits his side instead, like in the show. There, setup that requires no alteration to the story whatsoever, adds to his character as a very inventive but flawed thinker, and also makes the final evolution of his arm so much clearer because it's an emblem of him having crossed over.

They could've all fixed this if Viktor lost an arm when Jayce blew him up, and when he sent the doll to Piltover it would've raided Viktor's lab for things he can use to fix himself, leading to him finding his old hexclaw. Its useless without a hex-tech gemstone, but Viktor IS hex-tech now, so he makes the doll bring it along with any other parts, Singed throws all of that to Viktor's cocoon and then pumps the Warwick blood on him The "arcane" evolution merges his body with the hex-claw and uses the metal parts to somewhat reconstruct his arm (But it looks like the metal puppets) and boom, we still have Viktor from Arcane with perfectly explained Viktor from League characteristics

When they announced the lore merge my guess was that Victor would see the dangers of the arcane and pivot into making machines, but so hard that he sees weakness in flesh and humanity (so he becomes game Victor). And then in Act 1 when the core heals him I thought "oh he could make the machines without hextech by using his new magical body and that also affects him both mentally and physically". In hindsight, that probably would make for a weaker story and leave the ending without a Big Bad to fight (there's Ambessa but she is not on the same power level) and probably not much sense. But that would keep old Victor and some of his uniqueness.

You should also mention how the new Viktor base model is almost completely different from the one at the end of arcane, all his promotional art, and tft cinematic. Even the splash art is a third different version which is an in-between the arcane one and the in-game model, especially when you look at the mask and hair.

i do not play league of legends but i did watch arcane and loved it, and while to me the old 2011 Viktor doesn't feel like the character i've watched i know that's the point because arcane and league of legends are not the same. I love the transhumanist, robotic concept Viktor has in the original game and i was a little disappointed that they made him Magic Twink Jesus in the show, when i found out it wasn't the original concept. i just think that riot should've made the arcane version a free/alt skin like the others, not rework his entire model. if i played and mained him i would be disappointed too.

My biggest gripe is that the new design just feels like it lost the transhumanist aspect. This extends to Arcane too since they basically abandon the using technology to surpass human limitation and defeat human weakness and just replaces it with "magic solves everything but it might cost you your free will". Like a way to have improved this and stay close to Viktor's original lore is that Viktor tries to replace parts of himself with hextech first before the hexcore ends up corrupting him. Imagine how that would've reflected on his fully corrupted design where flesh actually melds with his machine parts instead of whatever we got now.

I feel like the way Viktor’s story was progressing in season 1 was setting him up to deeply regret his meddling with the hex-core while also having him desensitised to radical solutions via Singed. I thought for sure season 2 would have Viktor’s arcane augments fail him, or prove detrimental and force him to undertake his familiar mechanical transformation. Act 1 + the start of act 2 seemed like they were going to lean this direction, have him start Jesus-ing all over the place but soon realise his augmentation of the people was actually a blight. I thought for sure Jayce’s vision were showcasing this, and that he’d show Viktor what the arcane was truly doing to these people, which would cause Viktor to spiral and spend act 3 becoming the true machine herald we know in an attempt to cut off the corruption and replace the parts with machine. But nope. Arcane needed a war arc, we needed to invent a new primordial threat to runeterra, we needed yet another doomsday event, we needed all the side characters to die, we needed to introduce magic because that was mysteriously absent, and we needed half the champion cast to either go missing or perish. I think this VGU is pointless. Riot has already shown they are not interested in actually updating the champions to be cannon with Arcane and rather sell their Arcane (cannon) appearances as skins. Jayce, Jinx, Heimer, Ekko and whomever else. If Riot are not actually going to commit (which they never do) I don't see why this couldn't have been just another legendary skin. Especially because his gameplay is exactly the same. With regards to Arcane savior, its not like Riot are apposed to releasing two legendary skins at once, they have done it before anyway.

The first thing that struck me was how much he has lost what made him a foil of the other Piltover-Zaun inventor characters and how they interact with technology. Jayce makes tools, but that require manual use. Heimerdinger creates tools that have limited autonomy. Seraphine created tools that had greater awareness before her retcon (on account of being souls), I forget what she does now. Jinx creates tools but treats them as though they have awareness. Renata's group creates things that become important to survival, whether that be breather-masks and bionic arms or addictive substances that people then cannot live without. Then, from the non-inventors, Vi has built her identity substantially around the mechanical tools she uses, and Camille was modified to become a tool, a weapon. Victor's human modifications brushed up against almost all of these, but with a focus on synthesis and apotheosis, which put him in appropriately stark opposition to I-just-make-hammer Jayce. Now, it just looks like we have all of those on one side, and then new hips-that-Twitch-might-ban sexy void man Viktor as the least Piltovazaunite looking character in the city, next to Janna. Seraphine looked pretty out-of-place when she showed up, but this is crazy. There is nothing mechanical about him anymore from what I can see.

I think if the puppet arm had arcane “strings” connecting the fingers to Viktor’s head and body it would work with the corruption theme, it also ties into/foreshadows the energy tendrils from the finale. I've noticed when i saw the show that the arm is a tool for inscripting runes faster. I get the criticism for the arm, but i think the showrunners at least gave it an actual use and i like that more than the idea of the arm JUST being there to make viktor recognizable as viktor. When Viktor faces Jayce, as he's talking the hand is inscripting runes by the second in order to "activate" the anomaly in the hexgate. Actually, in Arcane he does have a biomechanical element look at his design closer during act 2 especially even act 3 while toned down the mechanical bits he still had some. The in-game version basically removed all of it tho, and if u look at the concept art u can tell they were definitely going for biomechanical, they just failed in properly showing it in the final design.

Ya, the #1 thing I gather from new in-game Viktor is League of Legends really shows its age. Intricate designs simply fail on a technical level; as a result, Riot doesn't even try. In some sense, we might be better off judging conceptual execution based entirely off splashes and ignoring in-game models. Y'know, if it wasn't for the fact that the in-game model is far, far more present in the experience of play. Not exactly new information, though. Splashes have been catfishing for ages.

But that would barely matter anyway if he's just going to replace the whole bad leg instead. I feel like the shift came from them taking this one word "evolution" and going in a very literal direction, literally basing the design off of a chrysalis, when what it always seemed like to me was that "Join the Glorious Evolution" was a political slogan, and Viktor was a guerrilla leader of sorts. I was really hoping for something closest to his LoR incarnation: "Zaun, you have seen your share of tragedies, and the time has come for change. And, as with all great advancements, it must start within you." Like this is something I could really picture him saying on a podium. Key words here 'within you' clearly implying he wants their enthusiasm first and has no interest in making people submit to the universal mind or whatever. Or the second flavor text:"Ah, Piltover. As a boy, I looked up to you, the shining 'City of Progress'. But as a man, I see its corrupt foundations, built atop the suffering of our home, Zaun. Today, we herald a new era of Zaunite innovation--and you will be the first to witness our rise!" Old Viktor wanted Piltover uprooted for both political and personal reasons, he didn't just spend his days sitting on his hands in some freaking commune. Them doing away with the Piltover v. Zaun conflict in favor of uniting the two cities against two common enemies was just a baffling choice especially when Viktor was such a massive part of the Zaun side of that. Viktor's old visual design also actually works for the character really well if you look at him as more of a revolutionary figure instead of a cutting edge cyborg, the cape and the armor pieces really seem like they're for show like an exemplar of the glorious evolution moreso than they are something Viktor sleeps in. I kind of wanted them to do smth like the mask is sort of a mask and the armor is sort of armor but Viktor also has a spindlier mechanical body or endoskeleton underneath the getup that has his fleshy bits visible when he's not in front of a crowd. The Arcane writers had a stellar opportunity to lop off chunks of his body for him to replace down the line (like the arm and leg that weren't corrupted) when he was right up to the window as there was an explosive missile headed for the council room, but all they gave him was flesh wounds bc of course they did LOL. Also yeah, the third arm makes zero sense now. Let me give you an insight as an electrical engineer, there's been so many times when I've been fiddling with a circuit board or some kind of appliance and thought "god damn I wish I had a third arm for this" the arm is not just a weapon, he used it to grab and weld and laser cut and solder stuff man!!!

An easy way Arcane could have set up the third arm better would've been to have had Viktor use it frequently during his time in Piltover. Like, once it's introduced in S1E4, Viktor just has it on him, using it as an extension of his body so he can work more efficiently. When Jinx blows him up, maybe the pack it's attached to gets fused to his back from the heat; so when Jayce uses the Hex-Core to fix him, it also integrates itself directly with the Hex-Claw, making it look like the one from the original Arcane Viktor design. Then, once Jayce kills him and Singed brings him back, it is enhanced and armored even further to look more like _this_ version.

I think this video put my confused thoughts into words, I feel like this is the exact same thought that I've been having since the rework, but I just didn't know how to say it. Especially the bit about Riot wanting to chase the success of Arcane without thinking what the impact would be on the lore. It 100% was not artistic, there were amazing ideas out there but they just went with another "soft brand isn't real, he can't hurt you" and "human thresh isn't real, he can't hurt you" situation that never works. Anyway, it looks like Riot is having an identity crisis on what they want to do with Viktor, and it ended up making everyone mad. I miss mad scientist goofy 3rd arm man, and so does everyone else. People don't want to admit it, but Arcane should absolutely NOT be canon and Skyen called how stupid it would be and how there would be problems and now that the disaster is upon us... Riot will probably back off eventually, just... slowly.

The one thing I like about the Hexclaw in the show itself is how we see it rotate and tap the runes in the halo around Viktor’s head. It’s almost like he’s casting spells by coding them in runes, which is a sick visual idea. If they wanted to make him look like a machine god who’s ascended the “weakness” of his mortal flesh, why not give him an upgrade to his legs and lungs specifically since those are his main “flaws”. Maybe his legs could become hover jets because “If my legs are too weak, I’ll just remove the need to use them”. The Hexcore could’ve been fused into his chest, replacing the lungs which were slowly killing him with the Hexcore that gives him new life.

As a transhumanist who loved Arcane season 1, I am still annoyed that the cool transhumanist post season 1 Robo Viktor I had heard about got erased from existence thanks to season 2. Like Viktor was the only reason I originally decided to look into League lore because of how much I liked his character in Arcane only for the very same Arcane to turn him into the anti christ. My glorious transhumanist king was turned from anti hero who kinda has a point (a more nuanced portrayal of transhumanists than we usually get) to a cool and intimidating but ultimately disappointing villain. They also killed my boy. I still think season 2 of Arcane was between a 8 and a 9/10 overall but in general it’s depictions of both Viktor and Warwick (my favorite zaunite champions excluding the goat Ekko) and wasting of characters like Vi or Cait annoys me so much. I really believe season 2 was supposed to be like 12 episodes and have a more league accurate version of Viktor and possibly also Warwick only for the executives to fuck it up. No wait my bad, thanks to statements by the staff and concept art the information I just said (except for the exact original intended length of the season) is just straight up confirmed to be the case. God I hate Riot games and Netflix, my French boys did not deserve this foul treatment.

Iirc there is a concept in the Arcane artbook that was much more mechanical. This same shape, but actual machine parts visible in every limb. I think that would have been a more fitting solution.

On top of the sentiment of losing old viktor I feel that if I had no prior LoL knowledge old viktors kit would not be what I have in mind for arcane viktor if anything it’s closer to Azir/malzahar where his kit would revolve around his gloriously evolved mannequins and maybe a built in cleanse in reference to his holy healing in s2 act2🪬

10:40 I have this little headcanon that Viktor went to the lab before the hexgates to get the claw, because it represents a symbol of his original vision to share hextech. This was an invention dismissed by Heimerdinger and now giving him this halo of runes, a godhood beyond flesh and emotion that saves its people from themselves, the ultimate gift beyond hextech.

13:49 I was actually disappointed that we didn’t get this design, because I was expecting Viktor’s character to change to match how crazy evil and extra he looks. Again, at least two versions of Spider-Man 2 tried to do that with Harry.
