I like how within just a moment, Camille was able to navigate through Jhin’s traps with precision, and no hesitation. Camille’s eyes also turned from blue to orange, which meant her shield might’ve activated since she sensed danger (her subordinate stepping on Jhin’s trap).

For me she looked like she got a bit unnerved maybe even anxious. If you compare it how she enters the room as she owns it. But later she realized that she is the one that gets played on. But she can´t or don´t want to retreat anymore. It goes against her pride as warrior. So she just goes deeper and deeper into the trap. She is a professional but Jhin managed with his whole set up to break into her psyche and make her his toy.

Camille had some other clever references and framing I really enjoyed. When Camille's soldiers first step into Jhin's trap, there is a shot where she looks around and her eyes turn orange then back to blue. I love this for a couple of reasons; the first being it sells that she isn't entirely human. There is clearly something automaton about her, and it's this sort of callback to the trope of robots and AI's turning red at the sign of a threat. The second reason I love this shot is because it's a very smart and subtle way of referencing her Adaptive Defenses passive where she sees her allies taking physical damage, and is processing that information to know what she's up against. The last thing I wanted to mention was Camille in the 'glory shot'. If you notice, you can see her left leg is trailing her coattails that are very sharp and similar in shape to her legs, and the imagery creates this follow through in the motion of the kick even though by that point in the cinematic it's a still image. Great stuff.

It could also be a small hint that even though Camille is a calm and confident agent, the moment of the soldiers getting trapped still unnerves her for a moment, and then she recollects herself and goes back to her mission.

Her passive in-game gives you a shield thar is adaptative to the type of damage you're receiving, in the cinematic her eye goes blue because jhin traps deal magic damage, but then it goes back to orange because jhin gun attacks are physical damage, it's the same as in the game

I really love that even though she's clearly a beast of a woman, because of her design she still need to grab the sword with two hands. It would make no sense if she was able to wield it onehanded like ingame, even though her arms look like they could crush my skull without effort she's still slim, it doesn't look strong enough to lift and move arround that big chunk of metal

Some lore issues at the beginning. Jhin didn't escape. He was freed by the Ionian rulers and is used as an assassin but he can roam pretty freely when not doing his job, and camille isn't in law enforcement. She's basically the black ops devision of her family and only cares about Jhin because he's a perceived threat to her family.

One thing that this cinematic made me realise is how much of an unplanned unique position riot have for league of legends when it comes on what to do in the future, league of legends is in an insanely hard videogame genre, the MOBA genre, which means that to play it to a good level a good majority of the community sink in a lot of time and effort which unnoticeably also causes people to really really connect with their mains not only on gameplay but in lore and personality sometimes just by sheer pseudo stockholm syndrome, you can see it on the forums, people almost get a sense of identity by saying which champions they play and how they play them. I have so many friends that play LoL and really love their mains as characters even though similar characters in other media don't ring any bells to them just because oftenly it's flat out not even the kind of characters that they normally like but because in LoL they've spent so many hours with that specific character they just started growing to like them outside of gameplay, also so many people obviously get really excited and pumped up when they see their mains on the cinematics, they are almost like celebrities, can you imagine the potential that riot has for making single player narrative driven games on the LoL universe? I get GOOSEBUMPS just thinking about a game in which you play through Ionia's Noxian invasion or the rise of Shurima led by Azir in Journey-like deserts or the Demacian revolution or the calamity of the void or the unification of Freljord under Ashe's leadership

yep It looks a bit random what Riot is doing. But in my opinion they connect the best with the fanbase by branching into many directions at the same time. It´s not just to hook up people more to their game. It is not just a type of marketing strategy. It gives them tons of options to pick later on in time. And I think there is at least a vague grand plan they follow. What I realised over the years is that they spent not an insignificant amount of time not just polishing the characters and their specific lores. No they polished the whole setting and the faction they are coming from too. Even giving similar style attributes over many champions so that even if you wouldn´t know yasuo you would realise by his appearence and his armor that he most likely is an Ionian. The style of armor the ethnicity etc. pinpoints that. Similar with Freljordians or the rework of the Yordles, Shurima people, the Void. It wasn´t anything like that in the beginning. It was just a fantasy game like everything else. But with the years the created an actual world around the game. They refined, fefactored and rebuild everything over the years. So they are actively world building like Marvel did with all its movies to finally wrap everything together in Infinity war. I think Riot is following the same strategy. And as I said for that they are branching in a lot of areas, through animated shorts, artwork, web content, comics etc. On top of that you have streamers for each of the beloved characters, regional tournaments in a lot of countrys that are actively supported by riot, Cosplays, Twitch Rivals, Worlds etc etc. It´s all to establish not only the game but the thing as whole. This strategy made League of Legends not only survive but thrive over a decade. I think only a few games managed to keep people interested for so long. Riot is doing something what I really would like to see more often from game developers. Not pooring out game after game each year with half finished games. But more putting real effort and care into their product. To make it the best possible.

Jhin didnt shoot those soldiers it was the bombs blowing up after a certain time he only fires 3 shots one right before camille jumps and 2 while she makes her second leap. He has his 4th shot ready for her as she jumps in for the attack as his grand finale

Thi is all great but I am really impressed on the details on Draven and Riven. Draven's beard, fur coat and axes are so well designed that it alone probably took days to animate. Riven on the other hand is portrayed as a gladiator/slave but still can be considered sexy, not because she shows too much like Katarina, Leblanc, MF... but because she is powerful. Her back muscles, strong thighs and even sweat show they were not trying to go for the sexy "badass" lady, instead they were trying to portray what she really is, a soldier. From someone who dont like Riven in game (gameplay wise), I gotta say she was the highlight of the cinematic. Honestly, this is probably the best LoL cinematic I've seen in all these years and probably the best I have seen in a long time in gaming industry as a whole. Keep it up Riot.

Hey TBskyen, when you were talking about Irelia’s facial features, things like her eyes etc. I think it has base to it. The first thing I noticed when I saw Irelia in this cinematic, very reminded me of Stef Sanjati here on KZbin, who has Waardenburg syndrome, which causes unusual facial structures, noticeably their eyes, makes them more far apart and look bigger. Of course, Irelia is sorta based on Asian facial features, when you google “Waardenburg Syndrome Asian” you will Asian who have the syndrome with blue eyes. Of course it will be a stretch, but it is very interesting to compare and see the similarities. So I did feel like Irelia looked like a real person because I was familiar with the Waardenburg Syndrome :)

As someone who enjoys animation but doesn't know enough about it to appreciate it like you do - I felt it was excellent use of montage, parallelling these three scenarios that as someone not familiar with LoL at all looked like they could have been from three very different fantasy films, and providing them the same vibe and energy, especially with how this was cut as you mentioned towards the end. Dutch angles are apparently called that because German cinema of the 1910s when they were cinematically isolated due to WWI was big on the impressionist cinematic movement, which used theme extensively - It's a bastardization of Deutsch.

LoL's artstyle is semi-realistic, so I don't see the issue with characters having large eyes (think of how a fully-rendered Zoe would look like). Irelia's face is decent by that standard.

One of the most important things skyen did not mention is the music and sound. Lot of the scene don't seem to transition smoothly if you just read them visually, but the sound and music helps the viewer understand those scene transitions. For example the door opening scene of camila making an entry, where the music leads the viewer towards that sudden change in beat and you know it's going to be more aggressive. That's how you communicate it, using both visuals and audio. What skyen said about how they want us to be shocked is also kinda true. But It's more like it's saying "this is where things get interesting".

About the final shot between Camille and Jhin, a lot of people seems to ignore Jhin's shoulder-weapon when bowing is exactly aligned to Camille. That looks like a gran finale he would scheme. And about the Irelia's stiffness, it reminds me a LOT of those old Japanese martial movies when the fighters move/run/jump/attack almost not moving their backs.

Something i appreciate is that compared to New Dawn this cinematic makes the female champions far more badass. You have Camille bursting through the door with her squad, completely serious and looking like she owns the place, Riven has a violent fistfight with dirt,sweat and muscles apparent on her body, and Irelia which is supposed to appear as more delicate/feminine still looks powerfull. Meanwhile New dawn has Ahri running around like a scared anime girl and Katarina giggling her boobs and getting near-stabbed in the Vag because you know, that's a tastefull thing to put in your animation.

I think the reason the cut at 49:57 is still effective is affinity. Affinity of motion. The rotation of the squad member is translated into the rising motion of Riven into the arena. Forward becomes upward. there's a great deal of fluidity and continuity. Pretty fantastic if you ask me.

During the first two shots of Jhin up close, as well: I just want to add that the dutch angles keep you in line with the angle his face is at. During the first shot, the piano's vector is skewed down, but we are in pretty much perfect parallel to the mask's chin. And the same with the shot immediately after: Jhin's face, where he is looking, is what we line up with, leaving everything else skewed. I also love that it's not actually a spotlight: You can see in the stage view wide shot that it's a hole he has torn in the ceiling, with the actual chandelier and lighting set up crashed into the floor over on the bottom right.

What really grinds my gears are the odd, unnecessary pauses in action in the Ionia segments - first Akali just.. stops for a moment on Sion's arm like it's normal instead of running up, stabbing, and bouncing off in one fluid motion and then - the more pronounced example - Kennen, after finishing his lightning run trough the noxian troops just pauses for a second, lifts his hand up and gather lightning and lowers in in a werid, semi-fluid motion. To me, this seems like they wanted to have him be fast and fluid and have a dramatic pause where he holds the charged ball for a second before the explosion, bud couldn't quite decide which way to go and ended up with this both too short and not long enough break in the action, halting of pace that really brings down the scene.

Shent I agree with above reply. The kennen one was not only necessary to show off kennen, but also gave more impact to the ult. (IMO) the Akali one was her deploying the smoke bomb. That scene was a tad off-taste for me as well tho, it would’ve flowed better if she jumped up, dropped the bomb, then sliced sions face followed by a jump to behind him. It would’ve carried her momentum much more smoothly than jumping back the way she came from imo

About the Irelia animation, I'm thinking maybe it was intentional to make her movements look more "rigid". I mean if you think about it she's basically committing a mass-suicide, she's sending farmers and civil with no experience in fighting against one of - if not THE best army in Runeterra, so it's safe to say that she's not feeling confident, and her anxiety/fear is what making her body tighten up. In game after she dies she says "My form was off...", so this is basically what is happening, her form is off, and the "stiff" movements were intentional. That's just my opinion, I would like to hear what do you think about it.

9:30 The camera movement and positions also convey a viewpoint that we're trying to hide from Jhin while watching him. This suggests he might be someone strange or dangerous enough that we don't want him to know we're watching him despite the fact he clearly wants to be seen.

personally I didn’t blame Irelia’s uncanny valley face on the size of her eyes, Riven has big eyes too and she doesn’t look as strange. To me, it was their color/brightness. It seemed like she was wearing some really saturated blue contacts she got who knows where. I think maybe if they’d made the color a bit darker it wouldn’t have stood out so much against her pale face and dark hair. Or ethnic features, but this is a fantasy world, so that’s just me.

I'm kinda surprised how almost universally great your opinion on the cimematic is. While it certainly is really well done in many aspects, some of the animations really felt off to me. They didn't really communicate any weight imo. From as far as I can tell mostly because they are too smoothed out. One of the more extreme examples is when Sion hits Irelia with his axe. The camera drifts away from Irelia, but it's blended very smoothly into the previous axe tracking shot and even starts before the impact and therefore feels disconnected to what's happening on the screen. Or when Akali jumps onto Sion and slashes him. There's no impact, the camera just sorta stops and she jumps off again that's it. I'm not saying the cinematic is bad by any means, I just wanted to point it out since to me the occasional drop in animation quality was really offputting and with all the praise it's receiving I'm starting to feel a little like I'm the only one feeling this way

In general I thought Irelias bit was super tame. Definitely agree. However when Draven catches his axes in the Riven fight you can tell there is a lot of weight. Also when Riven head butts Draven you can see the power super clear. But yeah I agree it felt off at times.

Incorrect. These events are told to be in the future, as confirmed by one of the rioters. It also would make no sense to be the first Ionian war, just for the sole fact that Sion has not been an awakened undead juggernaut back then.

There's a lot of things about the movement that other people already mentioned, and I'll add to that the fight scenes of riven. It looks like they wanted to give her attacks a aense of weight by giving them aome anticipation here and there, but at the same time she just throws one of the gladiators like he's made of paper. Those inconsistencies keep popping up throughout the whole cinematic trailer.

One thing I noticed about Dravens spinning once you alluded to it is a bit of mini-setup when he rams his dagger into his seat right before jumping in. Not only is that a sudden motion we're used to seeing before action, its also a cessation of the Spin, which sort of primes us to expect something else to start spinning, which it does when he throws rivens sword, and shortly after when he's fighting
