Ironic the same actor that played the punk bank robber was later re-cast as Harry’s friend Horace in Sudden Impact in the 44 Automag scene. The most amazing thing about that scene was Harry managed six shots with a 44 Automag without a single round jamming, pure fantasy! Loved the vid Nick!

My kind of nerd! In James Bond, Daniel Craig throws a baddie off the roof of an opera house. A few films later, same baddie is now in MI5!?😳

I noticed that you said that the gun had a 5 and a half inch barrel. It actually had a 6.5 inch barrel. And if your gun was made in 1973, then it would have been at the same time as the release of the second Dirty Harry movie "Magnum Force". The first movie came out in 1971. From what I've read and heard from other KZbin channels, the model 29 came out in 1955 and was simply known as the 44 Magnum. In 1957, it was given the model 29 designation. You're right about it not being very popular at first. But when Dirty Harry came out in '71, sales for the gun went through the roof. Reportedly though, many people bought them. Fired a few rounds. Realised the recoil was quite strong. And then decided to send them back. I think the gun became known as "the gun no one wanted to fire ever again". When Harry states that it is the most powerful handgun in the world, it actually was at the time the first couple of movies were made. There were indeed other more powerful cartridges being made. But the .44 Magnum was the most powerful commercially available handgun cartridge at the time.

The English .45 Mars Long in 1900 had 700 foot-pounds but Mars automatic pistol was a failure. The Model 29 looks like a great target pistol for use with .44 Special loads. But it’s just nature and the average human being that’s going to make 9mm Parabellum or .38 Special the optimal choices for most pistol shooters. The 29 would be a pistol for that WW2 SAS fellow who could fire a Bren gun offhand standing because he was huge. The old 1902 Greener test of putting a round through each of six 12” wide six foot boards in a couple of seconds would be hard with a 29.
