Take a journey back twenty years with me. It's Gencon 2002 and a brand new company called Privateer Press is doing a sneaky pre-release of their upcoming game WARMACHINE. Four Battle Boxes for Cryx, Cygnar, Khador and Menoth are available and there's nothing like it on the market.
Twenty years later the impact of this game would lead to changes across the landscape of gaming and the journey of its creators would be no less interesting. Let's Play!

I remember being introduced to Warmachine by a friend when I was 13 or 14. We'd both been losing interest in GW games (the only wargames we had played until then) due to price rises and Warmachine's game mechanics were so fresh and interesting to us. Having to balance Focus between Warcaster and Warjacks made for some great tactical decision making. Also it was a lot more cost effective and the Battle boxes were a great way to start gaming. Its funny watching this how many of the rules I still remember! Thanks Ash!

I think its an amazing game, such depth and ways to customise your armies playstyle through using different Warcasters and Warjacks. . Its great when you manage to pull off some crazy combinations.

This takes me back. My first faction was the Protectorate, and the friend who introduced me to Warmachine played Cygnar. Always loved Kreoss's feat; knocking down my opponent's entire army was very satisfying.

With the old Gale Force nine tokens, black and white cards and the good old wreck markers! This really brings me back :D I am quite excited for Mk IV.

Ah, sweet nostalgia. My main gaming friend used to play Menoth, and I played Khador. Kreoss was a pain in the arse to deal with at times, great set of spells, useful feat, and he could do some serious damage in melee as well. The unit and solo options in MKI Prime/Primal is I think the sweet spot for the game. The core mechanics of MKIII really helped Warjacks and Warcasters, just sadly the game had too many units and solos that could take out Warjacks/Warbeasts too easily. Really hope MKIV can revive the game. Still, glad I was there for the game 20 years ago to experience just how fresh it was.

12:28 Charging for distance Yeah, it was stuff like this that had me stop playing the game eventually. The whole "But the rules don't say I can't!" for every single loophole that was abused. The final straw for me was when a unit fleeing was described as a "run directly toward their board edge". And then some little jackhole was like: "Hey! A run can be zero inches! It doesn't say you have to run the full distance!" And PPs response was: "Ok, that sounds great, let's just make that part of the rules." That was the day I hung up my pressganger shirt. It's sad, because the original version of the game had a fantastic blend of fun, tactics and narrative that I couldn't find anywhere else. This makes me want to crack out my old models and play some MK1,

I miss Warmachine. I started in 2006, and quit sometime around 2016 after the competitive scene just became insufferable. It's still a fantastic game though.

Excellent battle report and showing exactly the game that captured the hearts of many gamers. I really hope MkIV is able to find a new audience and gain back some of the relevance that the game used to have. The slower paced mech brawling is really fun to watch. By the end of MkII I regularly lost my ArchAngel to just 4 or 5 small Infantry models worth 3 or 4 points and the game just lost the fun and immersion that got me into the game.MkIII for me was such a massive disappointment of a release that didn’t fix really any of the issues of MkII. It pushed 2D terrain even more, same boring steam roller missions, animus abilities got nerfed into the ground and Warlocks didn't gain spells to compensate, and just ridiculous amounts of abilities on units that barely fit on the cards in microscopic font. And way way too much infantry and solos I'm not buying into MkIV anytime soon, but I will keep an eye out and see if it gets any traction and see what they do with the game and if they are willing to support it a bit more than they have been.

This brings back many good memories, I really liked the first edition. MK2 was ok, but never got to that same level of excitement that the first box sets had. Never made it past 2nd, it felt too much like the GW games I came from afterwards.

I love the idea/the concept of Warmachine!!! I see a lot of potential as an IP for Animation and Video Games! I learned of the game with your MKII Battle Reports and got in with MKIII, right before the game winded down in my area. I really hope MKIV is good and the scene picks up again!

It was quite different in many ways. The Mk1 to Mk2 transition was a dramatic revamp of the game. The points system was completely redone from 500pts/750pts to 35/50 pts- Mk1 was also very detailed and completely ridden with special rules on individual models - the Black Thirteen Gun Mage Strike Force had 3 (4?) cards for the 3 models in the unit with tiny, tiny text. The game was quite flavorful with all the old special rules, but slowed the game down quite a bit. Units had formation rules where they had to be within 3" of other models in their unit, and intervening models could "screen" each other for +2DEF if they were within 1". Losing the unit leader was a disaster, so they tended to stay way back, with a daisy chain of models connecting them to the rest of the units. This meant a lot of fiddly placement for the units, especially as you "waterfalled" combined melee attacks where Model A would charge, combine with Model B (who did not lose his attack from this), and then Model B would make his charge attack, combine with Model C, et cetera. It was fun, but in general Warmachine has continued to iterate throughout editions for the better.

@@madosx9903 Oh, mkIII is a much better GAME than MkII. It is better balanced both internally within the factions and externally. It flows better. The main issues is that the model line has grown too large. That is why the Mk IV semi-reset is good for the game. Mk I was a much FUNNIER game than both Mk2 and Mk3. Which had its advantages and disadvantages.
@madosx9903

@@KaptajnCongoboy to me the miniatures during mk3 feeled very hollow. Many effects got significantly weaker. And even after month, I still had the impression that the game hasn't been finished. The needed too many errata toake it fun again. Oh, and the whole 'you have to use the app' thing also turned me down. I like my cards 😅

They're releasing a new edition of the game later this year. That said, between poor decisions from Privateer Press around/during Mk3 and 40K getting a pretty decent revamp with 8th/9th edition, it's been a rough couple of years for Warmachine. It also doesn't help that a game that was marketed toward competitive play couldn't be played during COVID.
