TC Electronic Plethora X5 Firmware 1.4.3: Update NOW! Amazing New Features! (Tempo Sync)

This might be the firmware update that gets church musicians excited for the TC Electronic Plethora X5 and X3 pedals. Tempo sync allows you to control the tempo of multiple slots on the Plethora board to a global tempo. A dedicated tap/tuner utility pedal changes one of the slots to a tap/tuner button, which syncs the whole board!

I love TC pedals- incredible features for the price. The Alter Ego delays are some of the best around, and of course the HoF is legendary. This is a HUGE step up for Plethora users!

I have been banging my head on the wall for 24 hours trying to get the Plethora X5 in working order. Once I figured out NOT to use the software but just program straight into the board I was on my way. Then I found this video and tipped me off as how to control the levels of each effect. It sounds a lot better than my POD effects. So I am using a POD Go for dirt, amp, IR and I put the X5 in my effects loop. It sounds a lot better than the POD Go alone.

Justin, I played my To ex pedal( Dr Z factory patch) into a Plethora X3, into a Canvas Stereo line isolator, using your favorite Hall of Fame reverb setting for ambient tones! I’m a Quad Cortex guy but I was blown away by the tones I was getting today . Thank you Justin🙏

Hi there! You’re welcome! That's a great Tone Print, huh! Even setting it to 5-8% mix does something to the tone that makes it open and airy. I have a Hot Knob assigned to the mix control which I twist live when I want to go ambient.

Hi! It's not immediately clear from the documentation if the tempo sync is a global feature. I'll have to check it out when I get my TC board back, it's currently inaccessible. I'll bookmark this and reply here when I can!

Can you use a midi footswitch to be the tuner/tap tempo?

Yes, it should be able to. In the release notes, MIDI CC 93 turns the tuner on/off, and CC 92 is for tap tempo. Maybe short press CC92 for tap and long press CC93 for tuner on your MIDI controller? I'm not 100% sure as I don't have a MIDI controller like that.

The tuner on cc93 uses a toggle to activate or deactivate if you’re sending alternate cc93 127 to go on and 0 to go off. You can utilize various controllers with behaviours here, or there is the built in tap tempo module now. Super handy with that HUGE display if you’re running your guitar wireless and moving around a lot.

So. I have to give up a slot if I want to have tap tempo? or can I have one of the delays set for tap (instead of MASH) and then link them all to the other time based fx? Thanks.

I don’t think that will work. But I think MIDI clock via the MIDI input will work. I have used the HX Stomp to send tap tempo but there’s some tempo drift. It takes about half a second for the tempo to “stabilise”.

:( Sorry to hear that! To be fair, TC is very slow to update their products, with no indication as to when (and if) they will update at all! Maybe it’s an opportunity to get a X3?

@@AllAboutWorshipGuitar , nah, I'm over the buying and selling of gear from 1 disappointment to the next. There are so many options for PC, I've started using a combination of Helix Native, the free Tonex, NAM Modeller and other free plugins on my laptop. Controlled with a MIDI Captain and some expression pedals. Works really well, and when new software is released, I just download, try, and keep what works best. There is no need to buy expensive devices again when the next best thing comes out. This setup is even cheaper because I already had my laptop, and once I buy a windows tablet for work, it'll be even easier to set up. Getting rid of the X5 was frustrating, because I had the whole Boss ES-8/ TC X5 and loads of analogue pedals that I would probably still be using, but it made me realize this may happen again. So yeah, no more disappointing purchases

their fucking website is SOOOOOOOOOOOO bad. no way to sort products. they just give you a random list to pour through. terrible searchability. tc is a company that is quite literally all about flash. the website reminds me of something apple would do. a million random advertisements and zero user friendliness.

It's unfortunately true and I agree with you :( Their approach seems to be to catalogue and then leave it up there for people to manually sieve through (forcing you to scroll through their product range to find the one you want).

I call this Plethora update the worst one yet. It will be competely useless to 90% of users. Most players have no use for Midi or a Global Tap Tempo

I’m sorry you feel this way. As a player who plays primarily in church and needs my gear to sync to Ableton (where we run tracks) and synced to our light and lyric projection rig, tempo sync is a big deal. All about the context in which the gear is used.
