Hi, this video is meant as a fun and snappy video manual for people who have just bought the Mic Mechanic or want to know more about how to hook it up and use it live. The Shure mic takes a leave, because obviously we want to show off OUR mic, which - apart from being able to control the Mic Mechanic via the button on it - also is tailored specifically for singers (not instruments) and our effects pedals. :-)

This is exactly what I've been looking for! I've been a concert sound engineer for years & now play guitar in a band. I've been wanting to control the lead vocalist's effects, like using an effects rack at the front-of-house mixing console. I thought a stompbox that is easily adjustable and versatile would work great, but couldn't find anything. This pedal is pretty unique. It does seem like it's designed from a soundman point of view, but has simple controls for quick adjustments.

I've been using a Mic Mechanic with saxophone for a couple of months. I use an AKG 519 mic so always have phantom power. I generally use 50-60% medium 'club' reverb but sometimes delay and the bigger hall reverb combined. The 'tone' button is always on and you can hear subtle compression which is what I wanted as well. All in all it's great, does what it's supposed to do. Since I started using it i've had lots of people saying 'the sax sounds great'. Enough said!

I am using my mic mechanic on the lead singer at my church before sending to a Yam Ls-9. I don't need reverb or delay. I just want tone and pitch correction. Obviously the tone button must be pressed for tone but does the stomp button need to be pressed for pitch correction? If I do then my guys get delay in their ears.
@tchelicon9 жыл бұрын
+The Wedding DJ & SC Party DJ Just to clarify, when you say "delay" are you meaning echo or latency? If it's echo, then yeah, it'd be because of the effect being active. When the switch is turned off, but you've only tapped it not held it for "talk mode" then Pitch Correction will be ON. Correction only turns off when you press/hold the switch to get into "talk". Then, just Tone is active.
@TheWeddingDJSimpsonville9 жыл бұрын
That answered my question and is what I thought TC-Helicon ... Thanks. I am using a Yamaha ls-9 and I put the mic mechanic in before one of the vocal channels to give a singer a little help staying in tune. The problem is by putting the mic mechanic pre mixer the output goes to his avions as well and my singer is getting the delay and reverb in his ears. I need to figure out how to install it on a digital board as an aux. Would be easy on an old analog but welcome to the digital world with 100 layers. Thanks again.

Hello any way to calibrate the TONE BUTTON? i mean to choose the amounto od compression or the Eq? I see in the tc Helicon T1 there is the best regulation of tone, compression. Is there a way to regulate it on the Mic Mechanics? Or should I add a Tc T1 after the Mic Mechanics? Hi, can I turn on the phantom power on the mixer when the mic mechanic 2 is plugged into the mixer at the same time?
@thekaratesuit12 жыл бұрын
used this for first time at rehearsal tonight. i'm the guitarist who controls it for our lead singer, just for delays mostly. the delay worked well, tap tempo doesn't have to be held down for too long to engage tap mode. u can either re-hold down, or just leave it for 1/2 secs and it'll go back to normal on/off mode. tone button resulted in hi-freq feedback, pitch correction resulted in one or two unsavoury artifacts too. both got turned off and we just used the pleasant, clear delay -- 7.8/10
@tchelicon12 жыл бұрын
Heya youyankagin, The +48 of Phantom power would be more than enough voltage to run any of our products, but it's the current that's the issue. Phantom provides very VERY little current and we can't drive any of our devices with it. You'd need to be able to send between 400ma and 1A for our various products. Cheers!
@calebvilca8 жыл бұрын
I'm worried about one thing: If you set the Mic gain at a certain level and need to turn the mixer level lower to balance volume, will the volume go down when you hit the foot-switch? or will the Mic gain stay the same and the foot-switch will only turn the effects on the pedal on and off?
@tchelicon8 жыл бұрын
No, the input gain is relative to the output gain. What you're doing is pre-amping the signal before it goes into our Tone, Reverb/Echo and pitch correction. We author our effects to not add/remove very much signal level when on or off. You should get the same level with the effects on or off once the gain is set. You want to see mostly green/yellow LED activity, just not red (clipping).

hi, great device. My question: can I use this as a send/return effect through a mixer?... so I can aply the effect separately to several mics (in different tracks in the mixer)? IN this case, does this unit accept line level signals (1/4" plug cables) to do that, or should I use a "Y" cable with two XLR ends and one 1/4" end? Cheers.
@tchelicon7 жыл бұрын
You can use it as a send/return, but you can only use Reverb/Echo. Both Tone and Pitch Correction require a monophonic signal to work correctly.

Hello: I am writing here to see if some kind soul can help me, since I am quite desperate with the subject: I have a TC Helicon mic mechanic, well, I go to their website, I download the firmware and it doesn't recognize it, it only recognizes an old update from 2014, there is no way to update it, (unless I'm doing something wrong, which I doubt) since in its day I updated it without problem, but now the echo selection only does 3 repetitions that are barely noticeable when there is music in between. Thank you very much in advance, greetings.

How about -10dbv mixingboards and +4dbv mixingboards? Will the pedal work in both cases? Just only setup the level on the side of the pedal? There is no plate in this pedal right? You can add that with what pedal?
@youyankagin12 жыл бұрын
I never said anything about using a mic on phantom, but rather - does the pedal run on phantom power? Other quality products in stomp-box format run on phantom power and are used live and it is a very useful feature. Why have adaptors and extra mains plugs on stage when you have 48volts available down the XLR lead? Now that would have been a good selling point. And what are you talking about when you say you can't use a mic on phantom power live?

Is it possible to have the delay punch in only at certain times or is it on the entire time until you manually switch the knob? I'd want reverb constant during a performance, but only want delay at specific points in a song, but it doesn't seem like that's possible with this, unless I misunderstood something somewhere.
@richardkay20002 жыл бұрын
No. You'd have to use the reverb on your PA, and then punch in the pedal delay as needed. Ideally, delay should precede reverb.

I've had to stop using my helicon voicelive touch 2 live at gigs with my Radiohead tribute band, as sound engineers mostly aren't happy about it because they can't get my voice into the mix as they intend to. I think that either they're using the wrong techniques in regarding how to get the best out of the device, or that the device isn't designed for bands, but more solo singers or duos? Anyway, I wonder if this pedal is more likely to cause me less problems, ie will sound engineers have an issue with it? Is it simple for them to process so that I control my delay and reverb, yet still have plenty of power?

would i set up a harmony pedal after the mic mechanic effect box? if i wanted a bit oh harmony to go with my reverb and pitch correction?
@tchelicon9 жыл бұрын
+ralph ditchburn Hmm. Ideally, you want Tone --> Correction --> Harmony --> Reverb. Since MM does the Tone --> Correction --> Reverb you'd have to put the Harmony before the MM in order to not have the lead voice with reverb going into the harmony algorithm. That said, you can't use pitch correction in the MM if you have harmony going before it because we can't process a multi-voice signal for correction. I'd maybe look at making the jump to something like a VoiceLive Play, Play Acoustic etc. if you want to expand to the other effects. You could either give your MM to another band member or sell it. The Play series is about the same or less than the cost of a MM and another harmony pedal, so it's not a huge leap.

@tchelicon10 жыл бұрын
AlpineEnt Compression can enhance lower level noises. Make sure you've set the mic gain so that you see green/yellow on the LED as much as possible when you're singing. Then, it's not uncommon to have to turn down your PA's input trim to its own optimal levels. Remember if you're using Tone that you need to turn off any EQ or other effects at the PA side.

On a second note, if I understand correctly, the tone is always on, and the switch controls the reverb, delay and autotune, right ? How does pitch correction work if the pedal doesn't know what chord or key you are in?
@tchelicon7 жыл бұрын
It's auto-chromatic correction in Mic Mechanic. It corrects you to the nearest semitone. You can still sing a musically "bad" note, but you'll be corrected so that "bad" note is more accurate. We do key/scale based correction (that eliminates notes not in the key and scale) in some of our other products like Play Acoustic, Touch 2 or VoiceLive 3.

Hi Steve, You can control Delay Feedback but not overall delay level. It's tied together with the reverb. When you turn the foot switch off, the Reverb/Delay and Correction turn off but Tone stays on. That way your mic sound is preserved when you talk to the audience, but the effects aren't there.

Since you can't separate those elements, you might find that the EQ removes too much bottom end. If you have a local store with a MM in stock, you could buy one and try it. If it doesn't work for you, you could return it.

Thanks for answering! That's what I was thinking, but do you happen to know what frequency it rolls off at? I DJ and add in my own live percussion, so I don't necessarily need the super low end as the tracks I'm accompanying typically have plenty. Plus my girlfriend is a vocalist so if all else fails I'm sure she'd love it. :-)

Great video Craig, can you expand on the rest of the effects (quickly) or give a quick demo of them (the other video also shows hall and delay). Sings .... And it all started with a Big Bang .. Hey (feedback up) Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

You getting the power cord at 1:10 was priceless! Informative _and_ entertaining!

Hi, can this also be used as outboard gear once a normal dry vocal track is recorded? In other words, can the pitch correct, tone, be used to improve the vocal I already recorded with its own track before mixing? thanks!
@tchelicon9 жыл бұрын
Ron Robbins Sure can! Just come out of your interface and into the MM's input (watch gain staging) and then run back into your interface with the processed signal. Though, if it were me in the studio, I'd record with Tone and Correction right through the MM and then use a plugin in the DAW for verb/echo. It's just easier to manipulate things on the fly with the effects when working in the DAW. If you "print" the effects from the MM, you have less flexibility.

Will try, thanks!!

Thank you;-) can I use mechanic to connect another reverb pedal to it and sing or play instruments through the other reverb ?(not mechanic) in other words i'm looking for something that i can interconnected so i can sing and play flutes.My set up is lucas nano 600 with mixer build in but it does not have any effect, and i really want good reverb so i can perform live on my bamboo flutes. I want supernatural reverb but also need mic preamp to connect mic so I can play?.I KNOW MY EXPLANATION is not very clear, it is bit of science fiction for me ;-) Anybody can give me any advice please? thank you so much

I've been trying to find something like this for days, something that makes echos, reverb, hopefully robot, ghosty, or demon whatever sounds live. But the thing that's making me irritated is that none of these support USB mics (or at least I don't think they do.) Do you know if this one does? If not, know of any such device that does all things I listed that supports USBs?
@tchelicon8 жыл бұрын
No, we don't have any products that support USB mics. Our gear is mostly designed for XLR connections since those are typically used in stage/pro applications. It is something we're exploring for future products, since more people are using USB mics for informal/small studio setups at home and with mobile devices like iPads etc.

Whatever effect you have chosen on the pedal. Doesn't have any affect on the tone or pitch correction.

How can you do this with multiple mics and wireless mics?
@tchelicon4 жыл бұрын
Hi Awel! If you were going to run multiple mics into one mic mechanic (MM) you would likely need some type of mixer before the MM. You could use a small mixer on stage which you'd mix all the mics into and send them to the MM, or you could send all the mics to the main mixer and send them out of an aux send into the MM.

Nice review except like all the other reviews I can find, you didn't explain what the black button on the side is that says "tone control" .
@tchelicon8 жыл бұрын
On the side there's a Mic Gain knob, but no tone control button. On some of our products, there's a GND Lift (ground lift) switch in case you get some hum between a guitar and the PA. Is that what you're referring to? There's one like that on Harmony Singer.
@rickclayton30468 жыл бұрын
The Mic Mechanic pedal has a switch labelled MIC CONTROL that can be pushed in allowing remote on/off control for that pedal from the optional TC-Helicon MP-75 mic. When Mic Control is not desired, ensure the Mic Control switch is out.
@JohnFichtner7 жыл бұрын
TC-Helicon I think it's a little white button about half the size of a pencil eraser. I have no idea what it does but you push it in.
