I need this. Would it be better to keep the xlr cable balanced though? TRS instead of TS. Or would it not really matter?

From my stage experience, more than 40 years, I found balanced matters for long, but really long cables. For connections like few meters doesn't really matter. I prefer to use one of the hot wires to ground for better shielding. Of course, for having a three wires microphone cable. Let's say a classic cable, with metallic mesh and white and red hots...finally, balanced maters when there are long distances...tens of meters at least.

Set the effect on mono and use the mono output xlr, in my gtx is the left one if you look from connectors panel

Also if you return the signal to a stereo or two separate mixer inputs you can use effect in stereo and have channels eq handy. Great solution for tweaking the effect sound. Check the video at 3:40
