I keep coming back to this. It's already one of the most beautiful melodies, and Ugorski plays it, I have to say, perfectly. Lifschitz is a sensitive accompanist, which makes a lot of difference in the overall presentation. This may be the best performance of this piece I have ever heard.

Tchaikovsky had such a gift for melody, and these two interpreted it beautifully. Great performance.

Ravishingly lovely playing! Thank you, both of you.
I have been "away" from solo performances that this video was a most welcome surprise! (I was actually looking for a better rendition of the complete "Souvenir d'un Lieu Cher" than what's currently available online when I stumbled into this Ugorski/Lifschitz performance.) You could tell the depth of Ugorski's passion despite the almost indiscernible expression on his face as he played. Lifschitz is a wonderful, keenly sensitive accompanist who remained "in tune" with the passion as the composition progressed. Thank you so much for publishing this performance on KZbin.

This was just beautiful! I had not heard of Eugene Ugorski before today. I hope I hear a lot more. The local classical radio station in my area plays a lot of Joshua Bell, but I think this young man is at least as good.

I know for a fact that his bow arm is most definitely not French. His teachers, Igor and Vesna Gruppman, are known for being one of the few who actually teach the Auer bow arm, more commonly known as the Russian bow arm or grip. I would know, I studied with both of them!

The bow hold is actually more French. The deep pronation gives the tone color that distinctive dark soudn that you hear up against the bridge. It really works for a piece like this. If anything it might make staccato more difficult. He has a very signiture tone color coming from his bow arm. THe elbow would be up over his shoulder if it were a Conventional Russian bow arm.
@WorldStrings4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right about the bow arm being French because it originated from Wieniawski who brought it to Belgium and France. This bow arm (hold, only it’s not only the hold) Leopold Auer inherited while teaching his students in Russia. Now about the staccato- no it is actually easier to play staccato this way. Try it, and you will see (if you will do this kind of bow arm correctly of course, because the arm weight is properly utilized and it’s coming from the back)

I am Eugene’s teacher! My name is Vesna Gruppman and I am a former student of Yuri Yankelevich , Igor Bezrodnij at the Moscow Conservatory and Yasha Heifetz in the US. I have been Professor of violin at varius universities in the US and Europe (Netherlands). I have been teaching Eugene since he was 5 years old all the way until his career took off.

@justajiffy123 I dont know if he has a different part than me, but in the trills he did not sustain. He stopped the second trill before going to the 3rd one. He did not connect them. But, as I said, very good!

@TheFlakpanzer40 Probably. My violin teacher always changes a bit here and a bit there. Sometimes it sounds better than the original- I think she's a genius. Are you learning or professional? Such a surprise this song and that Vivaldi something movement are both in the Grade 7 Royal School of Music examination pieces... One that's challenging 10/10, the other 3/10... Awkward!

I love the technical proficiency here, nice big sound, confident etc. But really your approach is very abrasive and does not compliment the music. It's too aggressive. This music needs a passion that is matched with tenderness. There is too much drama here, it's not really required... My own opinion.
@FloydTurpenteen7 жыл бұрын
Vincent, please post a link to your performance so we can hear how much better it sounds with the tender passion with which you imbue it.

@meadowlarkascending7 жыл бұрын
Abrasive? Perhaps we were listening to different recordings here...
@MrJumpie146 жыл бұрын
Hes tender when the music requires it and dramatic when the accents are written and build ups are present. Either way the passion comes through indefinitely that really gives the piece character. If you heard heifetz rendition you would understand that this piece is not tender despite the name and style. Each musician at this level plays from their own characteristics not just to match the style of the piece.

I personally prefer the roughness; tchaikovsky never seemed the gentle type to me, and in my eyes it speaks a testament to tchaikovsky's own passion :)
