Finally, another couple doing what I think of as the "Peter and Suzanne" (ie, Farrell and Martins) nose-to-the-ground fish dive variant. I had heard the pdd had been taken down but I'm so glad the variations and coda are still here! Thanks for posting! I do have to ask what the film editor or camera people were thinking, though. Sideways is not the way you want to see ballet, esp Balanchine, whose use of the floor was so remarkable.

I saw this whole gala when it was streamed a few months ago and the annoying camera angles were there throughout and drove me crazy. Who wants to see the Manon bedroom pas de Deux from the side?? Plus, in the beginning pas de Deux from the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, the music and the dancing were way out of synch with each other - possibly why it isn’t shown here. But they are wonderful, especially Muntagirov.

@@ntricker Darn, sorry I missed that. I lost track of RB's streams around the time they advertised Dances at a Gathering. Trying to find the Symphonic Variations {with Nela Nunez} they just advertised.

And even then, they don't quite get the fish dives right a la Farrell and Martins. Thankfully, the latter's variant is recorded forever more in that 30 second clip in the movie, "The Turning Point." I can't pull it up on KZbin or Amazon Prime right now, but Farrell's way with those fish dives was singular. In my mind's eye, I see both her legs straight and crossed at the thighs, her head plummeting to the floor with both her arms either at her side or behind her; perilously close to breaking her neck, as Martins catches her just in time. Her head in particular describes an arc as it falls to the floor, almost pendulum-like in motion. It's really a breathtaking moment.

@@avesraggiana I've seen a still of that move and Martins is still standing and looking so nonchalant you'd think he was about to step out for a quick cigarette. Not to throw shade on McBride and Baryshnikov, but I really wish they'd used Farrell and Martins in this pdd when they filmed Dance in America.

When I saw the full gala recording , for some reason in the first part, the music was way out of synch with the dancing and it made it painful to watch! A shame we don’t have the whole thing but really, on this occasion we’re better off with that bit missing!
