Over 40 years ago, I asked my music major brother for some classical records for Christmas; one of his gifts was the London recording of Georg Solti with the Israel Philharmonic performing this piece. I played it over and over while studying in college. I had largely forgotten how many memorable themes it contains. Thank you for a wonderful, balanced performance of one of the loveliest compositions of a great composer.

Like a lot of people that were kids in the early, mid, and late 50s I heard beautiful pieces of music like this as . . . soundtracks to Walt Disney, and Tom & Jerry Cartoons! It wasn't until many many years later did I 1) hear them on a classical-only music station so as to put a name to the music, and, 2) hear the music in its entirety. It is truly wonderful. In a way, those cartoon-makers set us up for this!
@deewesthill69662 жыл бұрын
The world is a better place because of animated cartoonists and video game creators putting samples of great music into their works! It's often the only time millions of culturally deprived kids will ever hear it!

This is how I always think Tchaikovsky wanted this piece played, void of the "big" sound from too many string instruments. Intimate, refreshing and each phrase expressing the subtle sounds of what the composer wanted. I only wish the audience would never applause between the movements, rather to reflect silently on what beauty they just heard. This is after all a stunning, moving piece of orchestration.

xpk ryanx- I would like to remind you that the days of the former classical era, the era of live musicians everywhere at every event, have passed us by, and hearing classical, romantic, and baroque music live is the only way to really experience it. So, what do we do? We can instead listen to the music within the context of a story. In a film, a game, or even as part of a presentation. Music is a living thing. It needs to either be heard live or experienced as an influencing force on something else. Food for thought.

I first heard this extraordinary composition and music in 1973, on the "extra" side of Mozart's 'Eine Kleine Nach Music', which I had fallen in love with at an outdoor concert that summer in rural Vermont. Yet, this Tchaikovsky is the piece that knocked my socks off and gained my admiration in a much larger, deeper way. MASH TV fans may recall that this is what Winchester plays for his tent mates, saying something akin to "This is perhaps the finest piece of music ever written." The composer himself was far more connected to and pleased with it than his far more popularly known '1812 Overture'.
