Tank you for sharing this beautiful peace from Tchaikovsky, the title remember Florence , souvenir de Florence le musée des offices , beautiful place but sometimes is a little tragedy, this peace are not tragic also fast for my bien sur chacun reçoit un ressenti , il y manque la chaleur car trop technique, dépasser la technique pour aller vers l'essentiel, les musiciens sont excellents c'est peut-être l'époque 1950-51 , merci beaucoup tank you very much also to the very good musician , merci !

Look for Stormy Applause by Rostislav Dubinsky, which describes "making music in the workers' state" (subtitle). Many memorable moments, such as running from one funeral to another to play slow movements (a custom in Russia) when Stalin and Prokofiev died on the same day. Dubinsky made sure to have non-Jewish musicians in his quartet so they wouldn't be seen as a "Jewish quartet". Worth finding, and this performance is memorable!

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieses romantischen Meisterwerks im gut phrasierten Tempo mit seidigen Töne aller Streicher und perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. In the realm of rarely played or seldom acknowledged composers of the past, one must also note that there are unsung pieces by famous and fully-played composers that are well worth the listening. Thanks for this one, new to me.

+John Wells And again in 2016. Happy Birthday, Pyotr Ilyich! And to Herr Brahms in Vienna. Just finished listening to his Op. 18 sextet, a fine pairing, even though the two composers didn't always see eye to eye. From T's diary: "I have just played over the music of that scoundrel Brahms. What a talentless bastard!" Think what he might have said if he'd had Twitter. (By the way, doesn't it sometimes seem, especially in mvt.3, that while in Florence Tchaikovsky must have consumed a lot of caviar, borshch, and vodka?)

The first violinist and leader of the Borodin Quartet, Rotislav Dubinsky, wrote the book Stormy Applause, available in libraries and used. It's about playing as a quartet in Stalin's Russia and subsequently. One of the memorable parts is how the quartet ran from one funeral to another when Stalin and Prokofiev died on the same day. It is apparently the custom in Russia to play slow movements at funerals. Dubinsky also notes that he made sure to have non-Jewish musicians so his quartet would not be subject to prejudice as a "Jewish quartet". The book is well worth reading.

Tchaikovsky was endlessly self-critical. But he was a genius, and although that extra self-confidence would doubtless have benefited him, he didn't need it. He was a chamber-music mastermind!
