You are correct - Tchaikovsky IS a genius… his music is timeless. When he came to America in 1891 - after inaugurating (and conducting in) Carnegie Hall - he later stayed in Taos, New Mexico; his hosts took him out to the pueblo one night to experience the Indians dancing. My take is: that's when he looked up and really saw the stars… and he made his peace with death. He died two years later… but his music is timeless.

Shivers up the spine and tears at 5:04. Dad would play Tchaikovsky on our way to ballet practice 35 years ago, as little five year olds (who lacked the dedication to apply ourselves). And it makes me think of the Swan Lake Manga animation.

Why do people think that people would have been limited to hearing this by wealth? Sheet music was very popular, and many middle class families learned to play instruments. There was this thing called a "culture" back then, and most people were involved in it. 10,000 people saw one of Handel's performances in London, open-air public concerts were put on all the time, and there was music in people's homes. Apparently good taste isn't the only thing that died - people's imaginations too.

ah yes people could just put on a whole ballet with orchestral accompaniment in their house. then they sit around a table and sight read paganini together. just what a standard middle class family would do back then. kids these days am i right
