This is, and always has been one of the best symphonys of all time, in my opinion. It is so deep, so emotional and dramatic, makes me want to cry sometimes. It's like the soundtrack of his heart. That's why i love Tchaikovsky...oh the drama! I was a very lucky person when I got to play this (bassoon) in my youth orchestra at Carnegie Hall, what an extraordinary experience, and the accoustics in there are out of this world. Somebody else on here made a comment that Tchaikovsky died 9 days after he conducted this for the first time. Anyways. Definitely my favorite.

This piece, probably the best symphony to be written after Beethoven's 9th, always breaks my heart. For those of you who don't know, Tchaikovsky himself conducted the first performance in October 1893 - nine days later, he was dead. I loved this subtle and nuanced performance - it's not an easy work to get right but you certainly don't achieve the right blend of pathos and passion just by playing it through. Sokhiev has taken a careful look at the piece and has some new things to say about it. This has gone straight into my Favourites. Thank you for allowing us to hear it. Memorable.

I still think that Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony is greater. I know many will disagree with me.

Superlatives are absolutes are not good in music ... musical pieces move us differently but, sometimes, with the same degree of elation

Erwan Zhang I totally I agree with you. For me his fifth is more moving than his sixth

For a conductor and orchestra of this caliber, I was surprised at the unsophisticated audience. Besides applauding after the 3rd mvt, as well as after the 1st mvt, they totally destroyed the finale by applauding at the first hint of silence at then end. Grand pauses are as important as the notes.

My goodness, what a stupid audience... incroyable: le bravo-claqueur right after the scherzo. This almost destroyed the whole tension. But what a great interpretation !

+Conny Piano It completely destroyed the tension of the whole drama inherent in the symphony. I played it three times last year on tour, and only the last concert was without any clapping (thank God). If they clap after the Scherzo, it means that they didn't understand what the symphony is about...

This actually happens a lot with this piece, in the first performances of this symphony people fell for the "fake ending" and applauded and it is sort of a tradition now to applaud after the fantastic end of the scherzo.

No primeiro movimento o maestro, com um movimento do dedo, conteve os aplausos, mas nada pôde fazer quanto ao terceiro movimento. Verdadeiramente uma gravação que comoveu a platéia. Um registro histórico!!!

Great performance, but ruined by the applause of the audience. Too bad, the orchestra and the conductor did an amazing work.

I can't believe it! Great performance and terrible audience. I can still understand the applause after the third movement (though the conductor doesn't like it), but the insensitive applause ruined the impression as the last note of the finale faded away. I feel sorry for the conductor, the musicians, and the audience who came to hear the ``music''.

How to tell that there are non-musical people in the concert hall? Easy. rushed applause. I cannot imagine that this rushed clapping is after a solem piece as Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique. The music has still not died away and they began clapping. Dear audience, go to Mahler’s ninth symphony by Abbado with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and learn what you should do after such pieces

A great, wonderfully nuanced performance. It seems however that to perform for Arte, the conductor and musicians are obliged to make as many pretentious gestures as possible. Do they get a bonus for that?

Fantastic performance, but it needs more brass in some places, the strings drown them out. However, the phrasing and expression is great. Oh, and the clarity, timbre and articulation is amazing as well. I cannot remember if it's written con fuoco or not, but the brass is far too tame in many places; he needs to let them go, allow them a more brazen tone, with fiery and passionate energy. .

First movement too slow. I agree, the strings at times overpowered the brass. Final movement was spot on, played with gusto and fire. Great articulation! Excellent performance, and wonderful conducting! The ending always grabs my heart! So moving! The lamenting bassoon, and the emotional, heart felt strings. Ending basses were wonderful! You can feel his pain. Tchaikovsky's masterpiece!
