I met Jerry in 1982 and was able to play two songs with him at our house when he came by to get my dad to sign some papers but my dad was at our fishing camp. I was at home alone practicing drums. There were no guitars there at the time so he played my Yamaha keyboard through my band`s Peavey PA system and sang two songs through the one microphone we had. He was one of the first people who encouraged me to keep going on drums and seemed sincere about it when he told me he could tell I had talent. I had only started playing months before and almost immediately found myself in a band so I was nervous. I could tell he was a great person. Jerry was right. I`ve played music since and learned guitar too. That treasured keyboard burned in a house fire near our fish camp and my drums were lost to a bar fire after a show in Mansfield, Louisiana in 1993.

@@shable1436 thank you for sharing your thoughts but I respectfully disagree. Music is music . Billy Strings grew up on bluegrass from his uncle , not KZbin. He was shredding bluegrass acoustic in his youth regardless of KZbin in my opinion… but the good news is , I believe Jerry Reed was BETTER … Chet Atkins , better .. and Doc Watson, better . Strings is a speed demon and fantastic but these other players were every bit as good if not better . I’m not convinced it’s like professional tennis where the players do indeed get significantly better over the years based on training and equipment improvements. I think , unlike professional tennis , the old timers were PHENOMENAL as they stood in that era compared to today’s players … even the country guys from the 40’s and 50’s and Elvis’s guitar player and all those guys, the guy from Hee Haw (forget his name ). He’s ABSOLUTELY as fast as Billy Strings .. without KZbin … Roy Clark ? Tommy Emanuel was a beast before KZbin and he’s better than Billy Strings. So again , I don’t think KZbin affects the skill levels at the higher brackets at all . Those older generation guys could stand up to today’s players with zero issues.

Being from Austin, I was working, making heart valves, and listening to KVET and they played a Jerry Reed song... then another and I started to tear up a little. Two back-to-back Jerry Reed songs, and I knew he had passed. Then the DJ confirmed the sad news. I picked up the radio and wrote on the bottom of it "This is the damn radio that told me Jerry Reed passed away". I still have the radio. Thanks for reading.

Wow! Amazing that you did Jerry Reed! Thank you! He was such a *monster* guitar player, few people realize what a true virtuoso he was - they know he played but may not realize how amazing his chops were. He was one of like 4 (or 5?) guitar players that Chet Atkins called in his lifetime "certified guitar player" - the towering Tommy Emmanuel being one of the others so he was in stratospheric company in that club. There seems to be a cluster of people who started as guitar masters then became country-pop personas and in the end the general public has no clue the level of player they really were (Glen Campbell, to name another and there are several).

I first saw Jerry Reed as millions of others did in the 1978 movie Smokey and the Bandit. I was in ninth grade. Me and my friends all saw that movie countless times (I actually think the number was around 27 or so). While my friends all had the hots for the Trans Am and even I'll admit that car was one of the sexiest cars of the age, I was in awe of that KW just as I was even earlier in my life with the show Movin On and the '74 KW W900 that Sonny Pruitt (Claud Akins) and Will Chandler (Frank Converse) drove around the country. I think the reason why "Smokey" was such a hit was not only because of all the great car gags and banter but because of the friendship that Jerry Reed and Burt Reynolds shared in real life showed through Cleadus Snow and Bo Darble. We should all be so lucky to have e friends like that.

Dolly Parton had a similar but slightly different experience with Elvis and Colonel Tom. E wanted to record "I Will Always Love You", and Dolly was thrilled - but when she found out about having to give up half of the publishing, she said "thanks anyway". And Dolly is quick to point out that she is very glad she made this decision, especially after Whitney Houston made it a monumental hit - and Dolly made a ton as songwriter.

I was wondering if anybody would mention this. I'm glad to see that a great guy like Jerry Reed had the stones to do the same thing. Tom Parker was a real piece of work.

Back in the time when Elvis was going to cut I will always love you it was an early seventies the time when he divorced Priscilla Elvis Presley would have made that song a hell of a bigger hit at that time because he was singing because he was singing it from his emotions of Priscilla Presley Dolly Parton already had a hit with the song with her own version so that's one of the reasons why one of the reasons why she didn't agree to Colonel Parker's demand Colonel Parker was a rude person when he came off on a business part of the deal I was didn't even know about that either Elvis was going to fire Colonel Parker when he found out about that cuz he really wanted to record that song. I never heard this story about Jerry Reed I thought Dolly Parton was the only one but everyone that Elvis Presley recorded for he got half the publishing rights and I was because of Colonel Parker he was a thief, not only Colonel Parker got 50% of Elvis's earnings he got 50% of all the profits that he would sing for publishing rights of someone else's song so think about it I was only got 25% of recordings, that's pretty shabby and this is why when I was died Priscilla Presley check Colonel Parker to court when I was dying because he was trying to get 73% of the royalties after Elvis died which is another bulshit crack. And Colonel Parker lost in other words Colonel Parker died broke. If Elvis Presley was alive then Elvis Presley with a one back all that 50% that Colonel Parker can't scammed Elvis out of because Elvis didn't know what he was doing he was new at all this Colonel Parker was a con artist this is why he was kicked out of the United States let me rephrase I'm not sure if that's why I was kicked out of the United States he was kicked out of the United States because of something to do with the military I supposedly killed somebody in the military and he wasn't allowed back in the United States I'm not sure if something around that line, Colonel Parker was nothing but a rip-off artist he stole from Elvis throughout the years cuz he was controlling a lot of the money and Alice's father was involved in it somehow too but you'll never admit it, Elvis didn't trust too many people so he had the right people in line that he did trust which he thought he could trust his own father and Colonel Parker and Colonel Parker. I grew up in the Rock N Roll Era of Elvis, Rick Nelson, Chuck Berry etc. Someone told me about this new album in 1967 by this guitar playing, singing songwriter named Jerry Reed. I purchased that lp and every Reed album until his final. He was great on novelty songs as well as very heart felt songs like Today Is Mine and A Thing Called Love and more. He was a great performer and a true original.

Agree. Jerry in my opinion was one of the hardest guitar players to copy. The guy had such a great style of playing. Thanks for watching!

What memories man. Grew up with this music. My parents were big fans. Listened to a lot of this music with them. Love Marty Robbins especially his trail songs. I say again, you are the best!! Maybe you could do Marty Robbins. Take care & God bless.

Thanks Mark. I do like some country music. Especially players like Jerry! I might cross over a little and do a few country artists in the near future. I do like Marty Robbins. He was one of my momma's favorite. Thanks for watching.

Jerry Reed was always so underrated, he was so far ahead of his time with his natural talents. I'm just proud I was around to see most of his career and music. R.I.P Guitar Man thanks for all that great entertainment!

One of the all time great guitarists of any style. Chet reckons it took him two years to figure out what Jerry was doing. That is one mighty tribute to Jerrys skill. Has to be one of the all time great human beings too.

Jerry Reed was not only great but kept fans at the edge of their seats with the wonder of what he would do next. You didn’t mention his style of comedy and sense of humor combined with that superb beaming smile. To know Jerry Reeds work was to appreciate his humor too.

Jerry wrote and sang the song “Today Is Mine” in 1968, and that beautiful song was the theme song featured on “Bill Dance Outdoors” for many years. He had such a unique talent that was underrated, as well as, unappreciated when it shouldn’t have been! Thank you for posting this abbreviated documentary video about his life!

Yep. Jerry was underrated to the point of being almost criminal! Another great mellow song by Jerry's is "Georgia Sunshine" and it showed that Jerry was wide-ranging in the type of music he performed.

Interesting to know about Jerry's Life.. I am glad he was not a struggling Performer for decades. Sounds like he found Moderate sucess early in life and lived comfortably ..

That is a good assumption of him. I would think so too. He seemed like a dedicated and hard worker at his trade. Thanks for watching!

It sounds like he had a practical wife too. I took note they had children, not right away and each daughter 10 years apart. It was a good thing the public didn't really know he was Mr Hubbard so it was not easy to bother Mrs Hubbard so matter how famous Mr Reed (Jerry Reed Hubbard) became. It was sad he died so soon. Side story: Harold Ray Ragsdale, aka Ray Stevens, had the same advantage of a stage name. Mrs Peggy Ragsdale had privacy. But some where I think in Ray's 6th decade I think he said he changed his name to Ray Stevens so his driver's license would read Ray Stevens. It reduced confusion because officials just wouldn't believe he was Harold Ray Ragsdale. He said it in a joke in regards to being stopped for speeding. I would think it would be more in line with airline travel, but Idk. Sadly, 15 min before the start of 2022 New Year, Peggy Ragsdale died. Ray put out a tribute to his beloved on his KZbin channel. Ray's CabaRay is a success and I think this is what is keeping him going. Anyway Ray & Jerry were friends. It was from Ray I I heard of Jerry being good at playing guitar. I have listened to music all my life. My preference is Clasical. I mean a wide variety of orchestra played music over the centuries. I can tolerate a guitar but nothing that screetches.. I cannot take a "wall of noise". Jerry fortunately didn't do noise. I liked his songs that were funny.
