Hi Tim, are you still using this vise to this day? I do, for as long as i have it, i use it now for 5 years and i have purchased about every accessoirie that stonfo makes for this vise, even the extended body tools. It comes with the pedestal base but i have mine on a original stonfo c-clamp. Happy fly tying and fishing Tim, tight lines 😃

I have an HMH among others and you can swap out the jaws as well, and they even have a tube fly attachment that works the same way- I got one a while back, I am new to tube flies myself! I have a bunch of vises that I gotten over the years, and still an old Regal that I have for a good thirty years is still a favorite to tie on, and it holds tube fly pins just fine too!

Hi Tim, first off, really appreciate your channel and your passion! As well as being a fly fisherman & fly tyer, I also collect fly tying vises and tools. This a a really cool vise with a genius fast coupling system. In my opinion the vise is very similar to the Renzetti Master vise and the streamer arm looks like the clouser arm that you can get with the renzetti too. I am lucky enough to own and tie on a LAW vise and it is a amazing vise. Very simple design and the way the jaws open and close is great with only the turn of the star wheel. The other nice thing is that the tips of the jaws where the fly is placed is away from the bent arm so you can comfortably keep your left hand there. This transformer vise looks very high quality and looks like it performs great. I especially like how the jaws are tapered, it looks like it holds the majority of trout flies great.

+mvalbano Thanks for the kind words regarding my channel, and for taking a moment to comment related to this vise. It is definitely a great one, hence my recommendation. Really nice vise Tim, I have the Marc Petitjean vise which takes hooks from 32 to 9/0 in the standard vise, and the tube fly vise comes out of the back side where the handle is. It was really expensive but I won't need another vise. Of course I already have a Nor-vise and I got a regular Regal Medallion as well. I love the Nor-vise and have all the attachments for it as well and it is my main vise. I like the speed of tying and the ability to make my own dubbing brushes in it. Well that's it. All the best and thanks for sharing your new vise. I might have considered this if it were out at the time of the Marc Petitjean purchase. Sean

Sorry for the delay. I like the Cobra. I got it because my first vise was a Thompson that came with a Herter's Fly Tying kit my wife gave as a 1st Christmas give decades ago. At the time, I called Thompson's factory and spoke with the design engineer.He didn't dismiss my call, as some other name brand companies did and answered my questions. Also, the price was within my range.

Love this vise! I've owned a Dyna King, Petitjean Master and the Transformer..... I wish I could take the best of each of them and put them in one vice..... The Transformer (for my uses) has a few floors.... 1) the base has plastic feet that can slide around a bit when I'm tying big flies and using a lot of tension.... some rubber feet would mitigate this, and there is also a video on KZbin where someone fills the base with ballast to add an extra bit of weight....I could also add a tying table mat that would resolve this, so no big deal. 2) The stem could do with being an inch or so taller, it would be nice if Stonfo offered this as an option like Regal do for example. 3) The stem doesn't exit the base at a perfect right angle, so it has a slight forward lean, again, not a huge deal, but it itches my brain! From the stem up (albeit a bit short), this vice is engineering perfection, everything else is 'good enough'. All of the quirks that I've mentioned don't stop me from owning one or make me want to shop around for something 'better'. It's an amazing tool, and the accessories are affordable too.

I had the very same issues with this vice. I had a brass exhibition HMH base not being used. So I took both the vice head and base to my local engineering company and had them make a stainless steel shaft to my desired specs. The vice end of the shaft had to be a slightly larger diameter than the base. They made it for £32.00. It all looks amazing as if it was from factory and solved all the problems. another option I looked at was using the Petitjean base with the added tray holder that woul have been very nice. But was more cost than I was willing to put into it.

The play is hardly noticeable Tim, It's just a tiny gripe. The quality of the jaws are superb and for the money it's the best vise on the market any on versatility nothing comes close to it. Like I mentioned I was contemplating buying one or two other vises but I'm convinced I've made the correct decision. Congratulations on whoever designed it cause it really is in a different class. Think the tiny bit of play is basically cause it isn't a fully fixed shaft which adds to its amazing flexibility, probably being a bit harsh cause it's a great vise. It isn't a big enough issue for me to send it back. It was the only thing that I could find with this vise that wasn't 100% lol. I recommend it to anyone considering upgrading their vise. It's the only one you'll ever need.

I've been tying on a Renzetti Master vice for over 10 years. This vice appears to be the Master on steroids. All the accessories are included (unlike the Renzetti), close ups appear to show a well machined tool with quality components. The price is approximately 1/2 the price of the Renzetti . In checking the recommended website, is is listed as unavailable. Despite the desirable characteristics of this vice, I think I would wait until it's picked up by a U.S. company or rep for service after the sale. Otherwise, I would grab it.
@TimCammisa9 жыл бұрын
+Brad Bischoff Thanks for the comments, and the Master vise is considered one of the top ones out there. How do you think this vise compares to the higher end Renzetti vises, such as the Renzetti Master series vises?
@HondoTrailside7 жыл бұрын
Interesting vise review. My main concerns are what is it made of. The base for instance could be some slag hiding in a powder coat. It's huge, and yet the vise doesn't seem that heavy. I would prefer a little more description. There also seem to be a lot of moving parts, is it wobbly, and how durable does it seem. Aesthetically it is cluttered, but if it works, who can complain.

TimGreat video! I discovered the Transformer while looking at bobbins on Stonfo's website. I own several of their bobbins and have been very impressed with the design and quality. I always wondered why someone didn't design a vice with easily interchangeable jaws but the addition of the tube vice sold me.....had to have one. My wife ordered the vice from Fishing-Mart for my Christmas present. Upon receiving the vice I opened it to find the thumb knob sheared off the rotary arm and the threads stuck in the arm. . The odd thing is that the box didn't appear to be damaged but the plastic bags looked as if they had been opened several times ...small holes tore in them??? Have you ever had service issues with Fishing-Mart or Stonfo. I have emailed both companies with no response so far although to be fair its only been a few days. Hope this doesn't color my opinion of what is a very clever vice.

Hi Tim, great video. I'm wondering about the base. I've always used a C clamp on my vise to secure it. Does this vise have that option? Also The height of the vise. Is there room for height adjustment? Or do you just put something under the base, a thick book perhaps? Thanks Gordie
@TimCammisa4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gordie and I hope all is well. Stonfo does sell a c-clamp specifically for their vises, though it can be tough to find in the US. Try a Google search and see what you come up with. When you're using a large hook on the streamer vise, how do you limit hook wobble when you're using the rotary feature?
@TimCammisa6 жыл бұрын
Roger, thanks for taking the time to comment. Regarding hook wobble, on all vises it increases as you get further from the jaws. When using the streamer head on the Transformer, I ensure that my hook shank comes straight out of the jaws and bury it far back (for those with longer shanks). The majority of my saltwater hooks have shorter shanks, thus that's a problem that I don't see too often. Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Tim, I am thinking of buying the Stonfo Elite vise. Can you either give me your thoughts here or post a video? I am looking at adding it to my stonfo airone travel vise. Thanks John
@TimCammisa6 жыл бұрын
John, thanks for the question, and it's my impression that the Elite is the same (or very similar) setup as the small head on the Transformer. That is my daily tying vise, thus I really like it. I tie a variety of patterns on it, from #24 to around #6. Once I hit larger sizes, I prefer to swap out the heads or go to my Stonfo Kaiman. The Transformer small head can hold them, but the streamer head is straight and tooled for the larger sizes. Overall, I would recommend the Elite (i.e. smaller head) if that's the size of ranges you tie. The only drawback I've found is that the material clip tends to unscrew itself, though I may try some type of adhesive that can be undone...just haven't committed to that, yet. Again, I have not tied on the Elite, but believe the Transformer is similar. I hope that helps a bit, and feel free to shoot me an email with more question: tcammisa@gmail.com Tim www.troutandfeather.com

No don't worry, there is a slot in the jaw that allows you to put really big hooks. (see here: www.ardentflyfishing.com/I-Grande-2546-etau-petitjean-master-version.net.jpg) This is really the best vise I ever seen. Transformer is taking a lot of inspiration from the Petit Jean and is probably a great vise to... (But no vise looks as good as the petit jean, and it's so small to carry on... Incredible product.

Thks, I did use this slot but was not aware that I could use it to hold big hooks as I was afraid the pressure will break the Jaws. I fully agree with you, it is a pc of engineering. But I just could not threat a uni thread 8/0 into the MPJ bobbin. the threads keeps breaking off at the tube end of the bobbin. It is another bobbin that I love as you don't need a threader. My danville fly master 210 n 140 denier has no problem though only with the uni thread that is always cut when I try to pull through www.twbs.info/vice/

Great informative video. Law vises were one of the super top of the line vises. Since the Law vises are no longer available, do you have any thoughts about the sowbee Waldron Vise or the Thompson "Vision " vise?
@TimCammisa9 жыл бұрын
+Gary Hartung Thanks for the comments, Gary, and I have never had a chance to tie on a Law vise (though I will jump at the opportunity if I'm ever presented with one!). Regarding the two you've mentioned, I have never tied on them, but if you have any thoughts on the two, I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks again for commenting. TC

High there, great review :-) Now when you have used it for som time, what is your thoughts about the quality of the jaws and there hardening. Are they still flat and gripping the even smaller hooks?
@TimCammisa4 жыл бұрын
Hi Johan, and this is still my daily tying vise. I continue to recommend it, especially for smaller hooks. Now that I'm tying more streamers, that head is getting more continual use, too. If you have any additional questions, shoot me an email: tcammisa@gmail.com Thanks for the kind words. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

It is not clear what material the vise is made of, stainless steel, brass, plastic frame, some toy?
@TimCammisa4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking, and parts of the vise are made of stainless steel. For a complete breakdown, I recommend that you contact the manufacturer: stonfo@stonfo.com Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Hi, I'm new to tying but have been looking for a good vise. Being a leftie, ambidextrous use is a must. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a quality vise that will last forever if I'm the only one in the family that could ever use it - especially since I'm already old! My search has led me to the Stonfo Elite but I can't find much info on it. Do you think it would be a good buy? Will getting parts be a problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@TimCammisa5 жыл бұрын
DW, I personally love the vise and currently use it for the majority of my tying and fly fishing shows. Regarding being a leftie, there is one tension screw on the vise that you would have to wrap your arm around to tighten/loosen, but it's one that I don't adjust much. On the actual head, you have to tighten the jaws with a screw, and that would be tricky (unless you can flip the head around, which may be possible). Regarding parts, I have yet to need any, thus am unsure. If you have the chance to see one in person, play around with it, and if you're ever in PA, let me know and I can show you mine. Hi Tim, now that its been several years since you've recorded the Stonfo Transformer video are you still tying on this vice and do you still like it very much. Thanks
@TimCammisa5 жыл бұрын
Great question, and the answer is, "Yes!" Based on the types of flies I'm tying, this is my daily tying vise (though I do have two other stations in my house with other vises). The jaws on the Transformer (main head) are easily my favorite, as they are slender and have superior hook-holding ability. Thanks for checking, and if you have any specific questions, shoot me an email: tcammisa@gmail.com Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Hi Tim, I really enjoyed your review of the Stonfo Transformer Vise and as a result have purchased one. I am very happy with my purchase and I am really enjoying using the vise. I have had the vise in my fly tying bag and have noticed that it is beginning to appear just a little tarnished. What cleaning products (polishers, wax, etc...) do you recommend to keep the vise looking in great condition (shiny like new)?
@TimCammisa7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message, Gil, and I'm glad you enjoy the vise as much as me. I haven't noticed that on my vise; where is the tarnishing appearing? I would probably suggest contacting Stonfo to see what they suggest, too. Thanks again for taking a moment to comment. Tim

Can it be converted for left handed use?
@TimCammisa9 жыл бұрын
+dlark What would you convert, the screw that adjusts the initial tension between the jaws? If so, I would suggest contacting Stonfo directly. If you need their email address, let me know and I can get one for you. From my perspective, it appears that you can simply put that screw through the opposite side, but I would prefer you talk to a rep for them, first. TC

What kind of warranty does the Transformer have, and if you need warranty service where do you send the vise? (I've gotten no answers to these questions when I've sent them to Stonfo.)
@TimCammisa6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, Roger, and sorry to hear about that. Are you asking because you're interested in one or because you have an issue? If the latter, where did you purchase the vise from? I would start there, and if you have no luck, shoot me an email, as I have a contact with Stonfo that may be able to help: tcammisa@gmail.com I hope that helps! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I was interested in one. I emailed Stonfo about its warranty and just heard back from them. But, their response was so slow that I wouldn't be comfortable with future support from them. So, I've decided to get a vise made in the U.S.

If fly tying is your pastime and you are serious about it then this is the vice to buy .a old saying goes "buy cheap buy twice" and its true , a quality vice is a investment and a joy to own and use, not cheap but quality never is.
