I think this is the best explanation of MO theory I’ve seen. Bravo!

I think your missing 2 electrons on the C2 mo diagram at 51:00? I think there should be 12 electrons total and 4 would be in the core below the board so 2 are missing? Anyways, that you for the videos that you've uploaded. You have no idea how much your helping me do good in pchem!! Thank you greatly

Yes, you're exactly right. Very good catch! I realized this just after I posted it, but I've not had a chance to re-record that part of the lecture.

@@TDanielCrawfordVT so, the bond order for C2 should be 2, right? thank you very much for your excellent lecture, it really helps me a lot.

Is it appropriate to associate Pi electrons in the MO's to the Pi-bonds in the lewis structure?? Are these the pi electrons or lone pairs that play out in resonance?
@TDanielCrawford4 жыл бұрын
In the fundamental picture provided in my lecture, the π bonds in the MO diagram correspond to double bonds in the Lewis structure, but the correspondence is not perfect (see O2, for example) because these are still models. Resonance is associated with Lewis structures, not MOs, and corresponds to superpositions of configurations in which electrons appear in lone pairs vs. double/triple bonds. I hope this helps!
@kknight394 жыл бұрын
@@TDanielCrawford Thank you for the prompt reply. This lecture was excellent and I needed the clarification related to the linear combination of the wavefunctions. I am still developing how best to internalize resonance. The issue I think is not conflating the roles that MO and valence bond theory are used to describe. In the case of resonance, the superposition of configurations seems to suggest some kind of average of those configurations. Which one of these actually refer to electron density in the molecule? MO? Valence bond? And, is resonance not an actual description of a electron distribution?

Thank you for the outstanding lectures. A quick question, if CO is isoelectronic with N2, shouldn't the Pi* be lower in energy than Pi and thus be populated first? or did something change when we are talking about hetero nuclear diatomic molecules?
@TDanielCrawford5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand your question. The type of orbital - pi vs. sigma, bonding vs. anti-bonding - is the same between N2 and CO.
@zulqarnainchaughtai4 жыл бұрын
In case of nitrogen molecule due to sigma pi crossover, pi MO's have lower energy as compared to sigma MO. Can we say that pi bonds are stronger than sigma bond in case of nitrogen molecule?
@suryanshkashyap89254 жыл бұрын
Yes apparently the Pi bonds in nitrogen are more stronger than its Sigma bond and a vivid example is the difficulties associated with the nitrogen activation process .
