That's very impressive. Assuming a uniformly spherical radiated output of 500mW by the transmitter, and a surface area of 10cm squared for the receiving antenna, the power received at 27km is just 1/18 of a trillionth of a watt. It's a good thing radio waves don't travel at the speed of sound, otherwise you'd have been waiting 2 minutes and 38 seconds for a response.

Very very very important thing is to keep the antenna vertical. Radiation these antennas make is perpendicular to its position. If you keep the radio horizontal all the signal is going to the outer space instead of other radio. XT420 is a professional grade radio so it probably amplified weak signal or at least cleaned up reception.

Great radio stations, in the past 70 cm band was reserved only for the most important government services. Mass production of the device at one frequency allowed to reduce costs and you do not have to pay 10-30 times as much for a full band radio, often with a lower sensitivity of the receiver. Wonderful devices, the peak of human scientific possibilities. I greet you :-)

I saw two things that is affecting your contact. One is, some of the noise is a little wind noise across the mic. Two is, moving around from one place to another. Even by turning around and facing a different direction will change the reception. A step in any direction can change the quality of the signal. Could make a bad signal better or a good signal bad. I always find that "sweet spot" and stay there.

Power is so deceptive. Obstruction losses and antenna systems are by far the greatest factor in transmission range. For example, 1 watt is +78 dB. 1/2 watt is +75 dB. Doubling the power only increases the signal by 3 dB for each doubling. A 2 watt transmitter puts out +81 dB. A 4 watt unit is +84. 8 watts is +87. The path loss formula is L = 32.2dB + 20 Log F + 20 Log Distance. Try transmitting from inside a shopping mall and you're luck to make it to the parking lot let alone 27 km.
@mikeav708310 ай бұрын
Are those radios using repeaters anthenas installed along the city ? * The noise background noise in the yellow Motorola ones might be due you have deactivated the noise filter, because it's usually disabled to capture weaker signals for a low-battery Tx radio or very hard environmental conditions that makes difficult the signal to travel freely over the air to the other end.

You should try this is the Mediterranean in the spring. They have something called the Mediterranean effect, which creates a tunneling effect for radio waves in the lower atmosphere, leading to crazy distances. I once stood on a hill on the island of Menorca in April and talked to a guy at the beach in Barcelona. We each had 5-watt radios. The distance was 220 kilometers. The best DX from that location was about 600 km with a person in Genoa, Italy. He was on a proper station, though, with a beam antenna and probably more than 10 watts.

At 0.5 watts on a UHF walkie talkie, low power (QRP), in urban or close proximity to obstructions range is meagre, sometimes less than 2km, open space double if lucky. If high up LOS every 10 metres extra gives a further range increase, so if say you're 200m above surrounding terrain and weather/background propargation is favourable, several tens of kilometres are workable.(sometimes) UHF is by its nature fairly short range and not to be relied upon much beyond your visual horizon.

Ok. so if you both were at sea level but on a raised platform 200 feet high with no obstruction , can the line of sight transmission go up to 300 miles ?? Is it similar to a single side band radio ?
@tdcattech5 жыл бұрын
No. As far as I know, curvature of the earth would prevent anything past about 80-100 miles at that altitude. You can get very long distance performance but this is caused by atmospherics and is not something that could be reproduced readily.

Steve Davis: Line-of-sight for two stations each 200 feet high would be approx. 62 - 63 miles (but could be much more in certain atmospheric conditions). Formula is square-root of height multiplied by 2.22 for each station (31.39 miles) then add them together (62.78 miles).

would like to see this test done in a built up area, line of site is fine but how well will it do in towns?

This video is an urban range test I did using most of the same radios. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmSvi2h5q9GEfa8

Hi... Has someone any idea how far i can connect in a big city... Due to the buildings i guess there would be much less connectivity... But how much less? Is 15km realistic?
@tdcattech4 жыл бұрын
Unless you're using a higher powered repeater, you'll be limited to a few hundred metres in the city. The joys of radio communication. :-)

@@tdcattech thanks ...that's what I wanted to know ... I have a stationary one ... maybe thats better? I have to learn many things about cb ...

Looks like you were doing the same type of experiments testing out FR-S frequencies basically PMR different frequencies instead of 4:40 it's it's 467 MHz yes you can do more than 27 km when it concerns PMR made a test at UBC University of British Columbia from UBC Ombudsman which is 300 feet above ocean a mountain 52 km away calculating of Kursi angle of attack managed to make the contact however the person was carrying his transceiver as well on FR-S basically same power the person I was at 1.5 K above the ocean so basically line-of-sight was almost visible no problem with the curvature of the earth as we lose 6 ft each 5 miles 3 MI the only issue is for it to work how to put the monitor button on off basically listen to the static the squalus was off monitor was on and we managed to get a contact going through the signal look like and sounded like it was a 5 out of 10 they probably would have work with the monitor on however did not want to take a chance this was definitely an interesting testing scenario also with the type of antenna you have the type of transceiver in antenna you're using may also make a big difference point is line of sight altitude are your friends however sometimes and some special circumstances you connect the waves bounce off Hell's or buildings this would work better in VHF definitely managed to transmit the small contact even though they was a hill infront literally in front so there was no way of transmitting a signal without the signal reaching back bouncing true buildings it came in very weak the point is you can do more than 27 km for sure sometimes by modifying the antenna you may also do so however as they say it's not supposed to be done for licensing issue blah blah blah however I've also heard of people Hammer you guys using specific antennas doing a distance of about 300 km however 4D small radios they have a potential of still kicking ass let's think about it this things were designed for like maybe two maybe three miles the fact is we can beat those by calibrating the equipment and having the right pitch angle inputting all variables together height line-of-sight also being outside the city well help RFI to be on the lower noise yes we can on PMR FRS gmrs we can achieve longer distance by pushing the boundaries sometimes we end up having different results thank you for the video

0.5 watt. I would love to see the Baofeng UV-9R plus, 10 Watt do that. Just 40 quid on a Chinese website. Great test btw👍😊

Hook up any chinese baofeng HT to a power swt meter, and you will see that the max output wattage is not true.

All transceivers are same performance as we made such tests in 90's on YAESU FT-411, ICOM,ALINCO ,BALCOM & KINWOOD all the same performance approximately,but i like YAESU transceivers,because of the software and their shape were better than others at that time...

No doubt that Motorola radios are still the best. I'd like to ask you, would those radios cover an area like countrysides like between farms? Also do you need a licence to own those radios?

Which one do you recommend xt420 or xt460?
@tony358425 жыл бұрын
Not too surprising. True LOS is invariably excellent. I can contact the ISS (about as LOS as you can get) using less than 5W on a handheld with rubber aerial.

What's pmr? Is that the same as gmrs/frs in the US
@tdcattech4 жыл бұрын
PMR is more of a generic term but PMR446 is the license-free frequency allocation for the EU and UK which, as you say, is equivalent to FRS in the US.

Im so confused! - When i read about the XT420, it says ''max distance 10km''.. How come the 27km range? :O
@tdcattech2 жыл бұрын
This is radio. There are no exact numbers. The XT420 will manage a few hundred metres in a built up area but much more with clear line of sight between the two radios.
