I was hoping you'd be able to review this! Merchants and Marauders is one of my favorites, so I'm glad you gave your insight on Outer Rim's comparison to similar games. One thing I'll give Outer Rim is it doesn't seem to have quite so many fiddly bits and tokens as M&M does, especially if you play with the expansion like I do. It's funny, a long time ago I used my old Star Wars Risk board and some of WotC's old collectible Star Wars miniatures to design a game really similar to Outer Rim, flying around the galaxy collecting gear and hunting bounties. At any rate, great and thorough review!

This is a lot of fun, finally got it to the table yesterday. Rules are easy to grasp and for beginners/casuals to pick up relatively quickly. the player help cards are well laid out and are double sided. I can't wait for some expansions and I agree, it needs more!

with the NPC patrols - our group ruled that the tokens are moved BOTH when a shop card is recycled and when it's purchased. It really makes those ships a lot more aggressive. also, we always play with 1 AI player whenever there's an empty seat at the table.

It plays well solo, but I strongly recommend you pick up the expansion, Unfinished Business, ASAP.

My biggest complaint is that it needs more. More cards, more NPCs, more equipment, more everything! Definitely plays best with max players.

So which overall do you think is best : Firefly, Xia, or Outer Rim? The interent seems to think Xia. Firefly still has a lot of cool factor though.

I think out of them all, Firefly is my favorite, but STOR is the most accessible and easiest to get to the table.

When playing solo, how do you find the AI deck? I thought it was OK, but actually enjoyed playing as two separate characters at once. Had good fun with a Dr Aphra vs Boba Fett - Aphra started out strong but then Boba scored some big bounties late to win (killed poor Chewie to seal the win). Great review as always.

I wouldn't rule out expansions. Corey was only one of the listed designers. In any event, it's got STAR WARS on the box, so I wouldn't rule out any expansions just yet.

My birthday is coming up and I’m thinking of getting Outer Rim or Runebound (3rd Edition). I watched both of your reviews on these games, and you seemed to be much more excited about Runebound. Am I reading that right? Did you have a better time with Runebound?

Gun to my head, I preferred Outer Rim. I had a lot of fun with Runebound when it came out, but I gave it to a friend when I moved. I imagine I'll be holding onto Outer Rim, especially once the inevitable expansions come out. I really missed dice in Runebound, too. The whole shaking tokens got old fast. I think Runebound is still a good game, and I'd play it if someone suggested it, but it's not one I'd suggest playing.

Plus it seems that Runebound expansions are slowly fading away due to being out of print. The solo/co-op expansion is much sought after. Both games play fast once you get the hang of it, but definitely go to Outer Rim because it is new and feels complete. But one can expect some fantastic expansions in the future. .

I traded away Firefly as I could never get it to the table and I found the mechanics a bit dull. The theme wasn't enough to win over the gameplay for me. So, if you liked this one more, I don't know if I will really enjoy SW:OR that much despite the cool theme.
