The black mud around there is referred to as black gumbo. As you found out, it's very sticky and gets all over everything. We recently sold the last of our family farm land there. It's great for growing crops. Playing in? Not so much.

If you are ever in Southwest Colorado you have to stay at The Strater Hotel in Durango, Colorado, Louis Lanour had a room there and wrote several of his novels there.
