My great grandpa worked at a service station outside Bourbon, Missouri on Route 66. No way to confirm this, but he used to tell a story about Bonnie and Clyde stopping at his station once to fill up. He said he was terrified; but that they were polite, they paid for their gas, and left without a problem. He thought that was even more eerie than if they had caused trouble, like they were a ticking time bomb that could've gone off at any time.

My great grandfather use to tell a story about one thing in his childhood. He was walking home from school one day. A nice young man rode up on his horse. Asked my great grandfather, son do you want a ride home? He said yes Sir please. So he got on the horse. When they got to the end of the small road path to his house. The guy asked you want me to take you on up to your house? Papa said no thank you Sir. I can walk from here. As Papa was walking towards his house. The fellow called out. Hey son when you get home. Tell your folks you rode on the back of Jessie James' horse. He said he ran the rest of the way home. He told his mom she was gonna whip his ass but good for lieing. He told his dad. His dad sternly told you. Son you best not be telling me a lie. Later that evening word came to his parents, that Papa was seen riding on Jessie James' horse behind Jessie himself. Pretty damn cool.

Why would they? This is the place a man who ended up murdering other people grew up. It was the cinema who romanticized gangsters. Save spending the taxpayer dimes for honoring those who did good for this nation, not the creeps. Sort of like the whole nonsense about Billy the Kid. An entire town in New Mexico marks it's place on the map because they claim he was buried there. So do several other places. The point is why honor criminals? Would you also like to see Charles Manson't childhood home turned into a museum? How about the Zodiac killer? They're just as much a part of history. How about every other loser whose stolen or killed someone. These were losers who in the end lost it all.

*FYI:* Clyde didn't grow up in that service station. He was born to sharecroppers in Telico, Texas. In 1922, when he was 13, Clyde's family moved to West Dallas in search of work, because the agricultural industry had gone kaput in the 1920s. They settled in a squatter's camp that was located close to the Texas and Pacific railroad tracks. (Literally, on the wrong side of the tracks.) Anyway, the Barrows were so poor that they only had their horse-drawn wagon as shelter. Eventually, Clyde's resourceful father managed to build a small wooden house on the campground which only contained the barest essentials (i.e., no kitchen). This structure was later moved to the Eagle Ford Road (now called Singleton Blvd.) location, seen here. The filling station was added later, when Clyde was in his early twenties and serving a 14-year sentence, though he was paroled in early 1932. And the rest is history. Incidentally, the Barrows sold the station in the 1940s and has exchanged hands multiple times ever since. I don't know its current history.

Hey Adam, a little bit of historic, family info. My dad was born in Dallas, and his older brother, my uncle Carl, grew up in the same area as Clyde. My uncle said that even then, Clyde and his friends were mean-ass, punky little jerks. On more than one occasion, they roughed up my uncle and stole the scrap metal and other stuff that my uncle was taking in to sell for the little bit of money that this would have brought. A big deal during the depression. Much later, after Bonnie and Clyde had started their infamous careers, my grandparents were at a social gathering in a private residence, and Bonnie Parker was there. My grandfather even danced with her. Now here's a bombshell that I have never heard before; according to my grandmother, a very Christian woman who did not tell lies ( and took a switch to us if we did) swore until her dying day, that Bonnie and Clyde had a daughter. But because they feared for her life due to their criminal lifestyle , the little girl, who was about 2 or 3 years old at the time, was sent away with others ( may have been our family, although I no longer have a way to confirm as everyone is dead now) and her name was changed. I would be willing to bet that not even she was aware of her real name. Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you. Keep up the excellent vids.

I’m from Oklahoma and I have always been fascinated by Bonnie and Clyde. My parents used to go camping down at lake Eufaula and they met a lot of wonderful people. One of those people was a lady that was around every now and then. Mom told me just after I met her that she was Bonnie Parker’s daughter. I always doubted this because there was never any documentation of Bonnie having a child. Now I have to wonder,,,,, By the way this lady was quiet and unassuming and never told us this herself but rather another person that new her well had told my mom.

No, their families didn't want nor did the city government at the time.... they were afraid it would make them martyrs to other criminals.... and that people would be constantly trying to steal things from the graves.
@donnalynn2
@donnalynn2 7 жыл бұрын
LadyDragonsblood Actually it was just Bonnie's mother who was against it. Clyde's family knew they wanted to be buried together and wanted to honor his wishes but Bonnie's mom was adamant. According to her mom's grandson she said "he had her in life, he can't have her in death too." She blamed Clyde for everything, basically believed Bonnie was sweet and wholesome and it was all his fault.
@donnalynn2
@donnalynn2 7 жыл бұрын
LadyDragonsblood Oh, and Clyde's family wanted a joint funeral service as well but again, her mother wouldn't allow it. The whole town crowded from one funeral parlor to the next to view their bodies. It was insane. American Experience on Bonnie & Clyde is on youtube. Very interesting viewing.

My wife read the book, and it was Clyde's older sister who was married at the time who fought and won a settlement for their father. The father used the money to buy the gas station. Right before that, they were living under a wagon across the street were the new condos are now. That area was known as a homeless comunity. Clyde was already a teenager when his Dad bought the gas station and was already into crime which he would do out of town.... Great vlog, I'm glad you do what you do. Have a great day.

The address was originally 1620 Eagle Ford Rd., West Dallas until it was changed to 1221 Singleton Blvd. The Barrows sold out in the 1940s. The area was much less developed in the 30s.

I remember as a young girl watching a Bonnie and Clyde movie with one of my Uncles. For a long time after that not really knowing and quite understanding the full story I did kind of like them and was sad when they got killed. As I grew older that kind of wore off and I do find their story fascinating but, am not anamored with them now..

The Old GE electric meter base with a Trimble electric fuse box I spotted in the back ground. That was a 60 amp / 120 vac service. No 240 vac back then. Gas pumps were gravity fed hand pump. Very old & original. Yup, I'm an old school electrican.

You should come visit my hometown of Miami, OK. Our large cemetery contains the grave of Cal Campbell, a lawman who was gunned down by Bonnie and Clyde. Also in nearby Joplin, MO there is a garage apartment building they both rented and has a historical marker by it.
@festivelady826
@festivelady826 5 жыл бұрын
Steven McGinty - My dad was from Joplin, MO. My grandparents owned a telephone exchange company, two motor courts, a grocery store and a dairy farm at 3508 Gateway Drive. My dad was 14 years old in 1933 when Blanche came in the store to get groceries. He said that she was very pretty and had on tight riding pants, which no one wore back them. She was very small, like Bonnie - barely five feet tall. My dad took the groceries to the apartment to deliver them and he saw Clyde cleaning one of his guns in his undershirt and boxers. He told my grandparents when he got back and they didn't believe him. My uncle, who was 7 years older than my dad, had just graduated from Kansas University with a degree in Journalism and he had been writing about the Barrow gang. He went next door to the apartment (it faced 34th Street) and waited til they came out at dark and told my grandparents that my dad was right, as he had photos of them. My grandfather was on the City Council and tipped off the cops. The shootout happened three days later, as they were trying to escape. Two of the cops were killed. The police gave my uncle some pictures they developed from film that Clyde left there. He later wrote about them and kept those pictures all his life.

Reunion Tower Observatory is open to the public for a nominal fee. You should take the DART Tram for the day, because it will take you throughout Dallas , and Fairpark, and northern part of Dallas for $5 a day that way you can park the RV, save some money on gas, and enjoy the sights on foot. By the way, you should go to the Dallas Museum of Arts this week; it's huge and it's FREE and church Clyde Warren Park next to the museum.

How do you know that's what all of the public is doing though? Not every single person who visits the grave goes there to 'admire' who is buried. Some, like Adam, go out of sheer curiosity and fascination. I certainly would visit because I'm a bit of a history nut.
