I grew up with tea, it could fix any problem. My mom would rattle a spoon in a cup and we'd come running. When I started working in Manhattan, I would order a tea to go, from the deli, they would put the milk in first, then the tea bag and then the warm water, it was horrible and it was impossible to teach them the right way. I had to switch to coffee. Love the video and still prefer a cuppa when its made right

I went on holiday to New York with my now husband and the tea was a war crime. Fecking Lipton's tea bags were all they had ANYWHERE and it is muck compared to our tea here and yes, they put the milk in first (except in the Irish bars when they had actual Irish people serving. In fact it was a girl in an Irish pub who warned us about Lipton's the first night we arrived and asked for tea lol). The first thing I did when the plane landed in Dublin was run to the arrivals area and thankfully there was a cart with tea and muffins and stuff (the flight landed from New York before 6am so nothing else was open) and I got a proper cup of tea. Not kidding about it being the first thing either, I left my husband to get the bags (he didn't care as he loves coffee so he enjoyed New York's coffee choices) and went for tea. I was gasping for one 😁

I laughed so hard . Even though I know most of the rules this was still great fun and your commentary was delightful. I used to visit a friend from Donegal and she would put the tea and the fresh water in the kettle and boil them together! Just before the boiling happened she rinsed the cups with hot water . At boiling point she turned the heat off and as soon as the tea was still she put it into the cups and added warm milk as requested. It was amazing tea. It was certainly never insipid!

I once bought Netto own brand tea bags. It was like drinking sawdust! Threw away the rest of the box. When I was growing up in the 70s/80s, my Mum used Lyons loose tea. Was lovely with boiled well water. She used the used squeezed out tea leaves to scatter on the kitchen floor to stop the dust rising while sweeping the cement floor. The water quality does make a difference. I have lived in the chalky south of England and now in the North where the water is softer, tea does taste different. I was the only one my father-in-law would allow to make him a cuppa. He liked it best stewed in the pot until there was a skin on top and only the tiniest drop of milk added. Chopped up rhubarb added to the teapot and allowed to boil until the rhubarb soft make the teapot sparkling clean. Milk was added back in the day first when using bone china cups, to prevent the cups from cracking from the heat

Milk first is correct if the tea is being brewed in a separate pot and not in the cup. Milk second if you're brewing with a teabag in a cup, since tea needs to be brewed at boiling. Simple rules. My grandfather always used to brew a pot of tea and put milk in the cups first, it was like having a luxurious tea experience every time I visited. Teabag + milk second didn't even come close.

I heard that the order of putting the milk in had to do with the quality of your crockery or china and how apt it was to crack when you added very hot tea. milk goes into the cup 1st because china which the cups were made of would crack with the hot tea. Once the leaves are removed from the tea you can keep the tea warm because it won't get that stewed taste off it; but if the milk goes in the tea it makes it taste rancid.
