Could there be a broken shield or ground somewhere in the left channel?

Good call - I shall investigate - haven't paid any attention to the shielding/grounding so far. Cheers, John

A dodgy pot/switch contact would be my first suspect. Variable cap leakage and Bias Oscillator noise next. A closer camera sweep of the schematic if you don't nail it John. ;)
